Musical Director’s Report

AGM 2020-21

2020/21 was another challenging year for WYM. With the country coming out of lockdown and schools returning we decided to restart all our groups face-to-face from September. We put a range of measures in place to make sure that we could so this in a COVID secure way.

We rehearsed successfully for the first part of the term and we were also able to take part in an outdoor community music making day at the Wiltshire Music Centre. We had to move our provision online for a few weeks after half term when lockdown was implemented but we were able to continue to provide music making experiences.

With COVID restrictions in place we were unable to host our Christmas Festival in the normal way. Instead, we produced a ‘Virtual Christmas Festival’ for which our groups recorded a short video performance that we compiled and made available for parents to stream. We also produced a Christmas Lockdown Project which was a video performance of Shakin’ Stevens ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’.

When January came the country went into another lockdown which meant that we had to move our provision online once again and I’m very proud to say that the majority of our groups successfully delivered weekly music making sessions for our young musicians throughout. It did mean that we were unable to put on our LOVE TO PLAY! days once again as well as our senior concert.

Once the summer term started, we were able to return to face to face rehearsals again and with restrictions lifting we were able to host a series of Summer Concerts (five on one day!) which was a great success.

The WYM team once again went above and beyond with their commitment to the organisation this year and showed astonishing professionalism and creativeness when asked to switch between online and face-to-face provision. I owe them a huge amount of thanks for this.

Subscription numbers continued their downward trend this year which was also accelerated slightly by the pandemic. As we start to head out of these difficult times, we hope to be able to bounce back in September.

Statement from Current Chair of Wiltshire Young Musicians on 2020/2021

September started with face-to-face rehearsals again and although numbers were a little affected by the disruption, all groups were able to function. The Christmas Concert had to be recorded without an audience but was well received as an online performance.

The Spring Term started back online, but in person rehearsals resumed and have continued, leading to live summer concerts, but with more short concerts to work around the audience restrictions still in place then. This compromise worked well and parents could all watch their children perform live. The business consultant has prepared her report and this is leading to a rethink of how some areas of the organisation are managed, with a hope that we can continue running all the groups for many more years to come.

Many thanks to Matt and all the tutors for keeping the music going in what turned out to be another complicated year.
