## **Objectives and Activities**

## **Charitable purposes**

The Charity’s purposes are to advance the education of the public, and to increase knowledge and community awareness of the history of Melrose and the Scottish Borders in the context of the history of Scotland via lectures, visitor experiences and collaborative partnerships.

## **Activities**

During the period, the Charity took over responsibility for the management of the partnership formed for the archaeological investigation of the site of an Anglo-Saxon monastery at Old Melrose and its links to the surrounding area (Old Melrose and Environs Project – OMEP).

On 28[th] February 2026 it took over the net assets of its predecessor body, the Melrose Historical and Archaeological Association (MHAA). As the MHAA a series of lectures continued to be given. The season of lectures lasts from October to April. In the 2025-26 season the lectures ranged from Mary Queen of Scots, through poaching in South East Scotland to the Battle of Melrose of 1526.

Volunteers again led a monthly walk, around the private estate where the Old Melrose monastery is thought to have been sited, during the spring and summer, with donations going to OMEP (towards the expected eventual dig at the site).

## **Achievements and Performance**

The lectures regularly attract up to 40 visitors, including members, and, occasionally up to about 80. Membership currently stands at 40. Occasional sales are made from the Charity’s stock of publications. During the period a new projector and screen was purchased, much improving the experience of the lectures.

Up to 15 people attended each of eight the walks at Old Melrose.

## **Financial review**

The Charity took over the MHAA’s cash assets of £2,607 at 28[th] February 2026, as well as equipment valued by the Board at £760 and a stock of old publications on the history of Melrose and the surrounding area.

The Board decides annually on the level of subscriptions and visitor fees. Speakers at lectures are paid a small fee, on request.

No policy on the holding of reserves has yet been agreed by the Board, there having been no need for any such a policy to date. The Board would introduce a policy to allow for a safety cushion towards its expenditure, if it appears there are to be future operations requiring such a buffer.

## Melrose Historical Trust

Board members provide their time and expertise as volunteers. No value has been put on such inputs to date. The Board will be estimating the value of such inputs for future years. The Charity currently benefits from the use of premises without cost for its lectures. Were the Charity to use other premises the cost would be expected to be in the region of £200 for the full season.

The Board expects in the future to place any funds not needed for immediate future use on deposit.

## **Future**

The Board expects to continue to run a series of lectures during the winter months. It is to discuss expansion of activities over the next year to build on its educational remit.

**Approved by the Board** on 17[th] March 2026

## **Independent examiner’s report on the accounts to the members of Melrose Historical Trust**

I report on the accounts of Melrose Historical Trust for the period ended 28[th] February 2026, which are set out above.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustees Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006.

The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## Basis of independent examiner’s statement

My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an opinion on the view given by the accounts.

## Independent examiner’s statement

In the course of my examination no matter has come to my attention

1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

   - to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44 (1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the Accounts Regulations, and

   - to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations (as amended) have not been met, or

2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
