Following our rnigration to SCIO stalus, we havo seen more stabbjrty in otjr Trusteè b8se during ttr￿ year. We
welcome Ken Nisbefs C[￿OptIon as a Twst¢e ￿ JLm¢ 2025.
We also welcome the invaluable assistanca provideil by Juli• L)uffu8 88 Assislanl Librarian and Liz Aitken as
Assistant Membership Secretary.
Obrtuaries
We regret to record the deaths of some of our long-St8nding and valued rnembers, induding Dr Joyce Holt and
Robert Robertson.
Membernhip
The ffinan¢ial ye¥r has seen out membefship drop slightly, ¢x)mpar¥d to Ihe previous year. Al the close of
septeM￿r 2025, we had arolsnd e80 actNe members of which aiound 200 are Overseas residents. Membership
turnover remained high, with some 162 members choosing not to renew in the year. This was offset by about 234
new members joining in the same period. Our Overseas membership is predominantly US based {1271, wilh 33
Au$tralian$. 23 Canadians and single dioil counts from Zealand. Ireland. Norway and ￿e1ve other
countrie$.
Our onlino m8mbeTship continued to grow. In September 2024 we posted som8 550 ¢opi&s of the Joum8110
metnbers and emailed 8 further 135 pdf cy¥ies. By June 2025 we posted some 390 eopiès. vAth ovèr 340
members optlng to receive the p(ff version.
th regret, we had to propose an infftase in our Membership Subscription Rates, to refled the signifiranl
inuea$e$ in postal ¢osls- ospeGsally for Overseas postage. This inuease was approved at the June 2025 AGM.
Following this chan9e. most of our Overseas rnembers now receive the joumal in the pdf format. This represents
a Sbgnificant saving to the Soaety In lemi$ of printing and distribution costs. We also now distribute over 360
coiies ofour monthty email nwsletter lo meml*f8.

SCIO ststus
Folkjwing the agraemenl by mefflbers at tho EGM in Aprfl 2024, the Soaety has sucee$slulty migrated its status
to that of a Scottish Charity In￿rpo[ated organisat￿n ISCIOI. The parallel running with the old Tw5te&basad
charity has moslly been completed Su￿$$fully, and the ojd bank accounts were ¢108ed during the year.
One remaining issue that the Soaety is still wailing on is the tilb transler for 15 Vidoria Terrace by the Land
Registry. Until this o¢¢urs the old charity cannol be fiilly dosed. This is also impactH)g tyi our abilty to daim Gift
Aid on donations and subscriptions, as HMRC WIN not register the new SCIO on their books until the old ¢harrty
has been di&8olved.
Treasur•rfs report
We ¢onlinue to review and up9r8de systems in the Library as needed. We have moved the building security to a
local Edinbjrgh fjm which is a more cost-effeciNe opt¢on.
Our investments have been ffloved to CCLA and are now in a charity fund whlch focuses on ethical In￿stIng.
The end ol year ha8 once again seen us Underspent in our operating eosis against our income.
Sales and publirAtlon$
The library has seen a rise in visitor numbers over the paat year. with more members making use of our
$ub8criplons and other resou￿8.
S818s of publications and royalties from Findmypast have remained consistent. Wlh morè of our own
publlcat¢ons available as pdf ￿pIeS and as Ihe pricè of K)oslage Gonlinues to rise, we aim to offer all our

Involving the efforts ol most of our volunteers and we hope to publish the results of thelr haid work soon.
Outreach
The Sooety attended a Family History Fair on Monday 28 Octobèr 2024 at the National Lli*ary of Swlland on
George IV Bridge which we thought was a Su￿$$. 11 provided 8 great opportunity lo speak with people already
interested in family history and also 8 Chan￿ to ne￿ork wrfh other organisalions such as Edinbuigh City
Archives, HES, etc.
We startsd 2025 wth a programme of 12 workshops on various aspe¢ls of famity history, induding a Beginners
in Irish FH wrth Jill Wlliams, researching English relatives with Kèn Nisbet and Eslate Records wlh Lorna
Kinnaird. A Couple ol these talks were opened out to volunteers and members as free talks.
On Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June 2025 we orKe 09ain took up a sland 81 the Meadows Festival and spoke with
lols of petsplg and gave out many of our leaflets.

Wth the commemorations taking pface all over the ￿Untry lo mark 80 year5 since the end of in Europe
and Ihe Far East, it seemed appropriate that our'annual outing. was to the Poppy Factory al Canonmills on 14
May. This was well attended by 16 members. We thank Pow)Ys￿lIan¢j for hosting Ihis fascinaling lour.

storage options showed that space cA)uld be provided for additional computers for our members and visitors and

Our prograrnme of Family History Classe8 on Zoom ran this year from December to June. covering a wlde range
of topics, including Use of Census Records, Researching English Relatives. Heatth Reo)rds, Using Scotland's
Peopte and Emigration and Migration. Free in-person help sessions were also offered on Irish Reseayd).
We attra¢ted Zoom a(1d￿CeS from 8¢ros8 the UK and Overseas. provid￿9 recordings lor those unable to attend
in°Feal time" due to time zone conflic1$. We heartly thank all our Class Leaders for their Ime and effort.

Flnancial review
The Society had a deficit for the year befo￿ the revalu8ts.on of investments of £71,569 {2024.. £12.845 defiatl,
attributable to opwating incorne of £49,57412024.. £H.8371 and expenditure of £61,143 12024.. £57,482). The
gains on the valuation of invè$tments were £7,779 12024.. £29,395 gain}. Investmènts have contributed
signifunuy to in¢ome of the designated fLsnds,' the Twslees have applied the majority of this IA¢ome to the
Premises Developm¢nl Fund which will be used for thè future efthan￿menl oflhe library building.
Following advice from OSCR. w& have reallocated the Sum of £4.560 frorn a fraudulent uedil ¢grd operation in
the VSA, held as a ueditor in previous *¢>)unts, to other In¢om¢.
The Soaety conlinues to be wn very cost•effectively thanks to the voluntary work of members.
