Structure, Governance and Management
Constitution
The Charity is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (a SCIO). It was registered on 21 March 2024. It has a single tier structure and as such the trustees are the members of the charity.
Appointment of trustees
Trustees are elected at the board meetings, held on a quarterly basis. Trustee membership is open to all parents and guardians of children attending classes, as well as interested members of the wider roller derby community. There must be a minimum of three and a maximum of six trustees.
Objectives and Activities
Charitable purposes
The organisation’s purpose is the advancement of public participation in sport. In furtherance of this purpose, we will aim:
-
To provide training and instruction in the sport of junior roller derby.
-
To empower skaters to advance and reach their full potential in the sport.
-
To promote the sport of junior roller derby in Edinburgh, UK and abroad.
-
To support our skaters, coaches and volunteers involvement in junior roller derby in a way that is fair, impartial and inclusive; respecting the rights, dignity and worth of every person and treating everyone equally regardless of age, disability, gender, race, ethnicity, religious belief, sexuality or social/economic status.
Activities
Demonburgh Junior Roller Derby SCIO is an Edinburgh based, volunteer run club offering young people (ages 7-17) the opportunity to learn and play roller derby, both recreationally and competitively.

This inclusive, full-contact sport attracts neurodiverse youngsters, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and those seeking a body-positive environment. The charity focuses on skill-building, confidence, and community, with an emphasis on sportsmanship and fun.
The charity provides two classes every Friday during school terms. The ‘Rookies’ class runs from 6-7.30pm, teaching the fundamental skills and rules for playing roller derby. The ‘Team’ class runs from 7.30-9pm and focuses on preparing players to play competitive games.
The charity hosts games and bootcamps in Edinburgh to widen the opportunities for learning and playing for Demonburgh players as well as those across Scotland and the UK. Additionally the charity facilitates and supports Demonburgh players to play games across the UK and abroad, supporting young people's growth.
This is all underpinned by our values of Have Fun, Be Kind, Encourage Others, Respect and Super Slay!
Achievements and Performance
Prior to the creation of Demonburgh Junior Roller Derby SCIO, ‘Demonburgh’ was the name of a juniors’ roller derby class run by a limited company, which had made the decision to stop running these classes. On the creation of the charity the trustees agreed to retain the name ‘Demonburgh’, but established itself completely independently. The creation of the charity was supported by a generous donation from families, who had undertaken fundraising activities for the players.
Since inception, the number of participating young people has grown, and with this we have focussed on establishing a strong coaching team, with two dedicated coaches and a head referee, then adding two new training support coaches. Volunteers are pivotal to our success, which includes coaches as well skating and non-skating officials and parent supervisors, where we provided both external first aid training for 10 and internal officials training to many more throughout the period.

TRUSTEES REPORT
For the Period Ended 30 June 2025
We proudly hosted a number of events, including our first scrim (game) night for all Demonburgh participants, bringing together representatives from the wider Edinburgh derby community as referees and non-skating officials.
We hosted our first game in May 2024, welcoming teams from Newcastle, Glasgow, and Orkney to Edinburgh. Not only was this event a massive success, but the league also took first place in the 5 Nations Northern Tournament. Following this, we proudly claimed second place in the UK playoffs.
In April 2025, we ran our first bootcamp event ‘A Day in Demonburgh’, led by internationally renowned coaches and attended by young people from across the UK. The success of this day was further enhanced by our work undertaken with Edinburgh Leisure, to bring the sport back to Edinburgh’s flagship Meadowbank location, with ease of accessibility and world-class facilities benefiting the wider roller derby community.
Supporting participation in roller derby is key to what we do and we were proud to be added to LEAP Sport Scotland Club finder, which aims to support unconditional inclusion for LGBQTIQ+ people in sport. During the period we also introduced our ‘Demon-strators’ programme, with more experienced players demonstrating skills to newer skaters, which has been instrumental in nurturing league involvement and mentorship.
We supported our players with their ambitions to play internationally, with five skaters being selected for Team GB. These athletes trained at a national level, poised to represent not just our league, but Scotland and Great Britain on the global stage.
A major milestone over the period was the approval of our first grant application to fund a loaner kit library. This funding, from the University of Edinburgh, allows us to invest in high-quality skates and safety gear, making roller derby accessible to all by removing barriers to participation. This activity is being supported by generous kit donations from families.
Further to this, in order to support widening participation during the period, we introduced subsided fees and UK travel subsidies for participants who would not otherwise be able to participate due to costs.

Financial review
Our main source of funding is class fees which are charged to families of participants, totalling £12k. Following a period of establishment, we were able to reduce our fees for participants.
In addition to the upfront donation from families and grant funding received, we were also able to raise funds during the period from fundraising raffles, bake sales and the sale of merchandise at our events. Our first bootcamp event was a ticketed event for all participants, allowing us to cover the cost of hall hire.
The key expenditures for the charity over the period were hall rental, insurance, the costs of running and attending events, investing in equipment and training our volunteers.
Reserves policy
The trustees’ policy is to retain at least three months worth of running costs in order to meet commitments and to cover any unexpected expenditure, and up to nine months of running costs to allow for growth in activity. Junior roller derby is a small but growing sport and the trustees recognise the importance of having funds available to adapt to the evolution of the sport in the UK, to run a breadth of events to benefit all participants and to support travel to competitive games, as required.
Three months of expenditure stands at £1,979 (with costs being incurred from May 2024) and nine months of expenditure stands at £5,936, with unrestricted reserves at the end of the period being £5,133. The trustees believe that this is in an acceptable range, as the league continues to grow in the breadth of activities provided, but will continue to monitor the position.
Plans for future period
The trustees intend to continue to develop through further strengthening the coaching programme, growing the number of events provided here in Edinburgh, as well as supporting the growth of our players who are working towards playing across Scotland, the UK and internationally.

Over the next 12 months the trustees will work on developing a clear vision for the charity and a 3 year strategy to guide us towards our goals.
As we continue to grow and adapt, we are actively seeking new partnerships and funding opportunities that will allow us to widen our impact. If you are a funder, community organisation, or someone who shares our passion for the growth of junior roller derby and its young players we invite you to join us on this journey.
The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report above.
