Newburgh Ancestry and History Society
Trustees’ Annual Report
For the year to 31 May 2025
Objectives & Activities
The purpose of Newburgh Ancestry and History Society is the advancement of education, arts, heritage, cultural and science by undertaking the following: -
-
to advance and encourage an interest in history, with particular emphasis on the history of Newburgh and the surrounding area, to educate and inform members of the SCIO and the public generally, and to encourage and facilitate research, understanding and publication of the cultural heritage of the area.
-
to preserve, conserve, understand and interpret, within the national context, the historical and cultural heritage of Newburgh and the surrounding area.
-
to provide a community resource at the Laing Museum through the collection, classification and conservation of items of local historical interest.
-
to promote and advance heritage in Newburgh and the surrounding area as a source of pride and to address heritage issues affecting the area.
Achievements & Performance
The Chairman would like to take this opportunity to thank the Trustees and the volunteers very much for their extremely hard work in keeping the doors open and retaining public interest in our small cultural and heritage museum. From simple tasks like cleaning display items, researching existing items we have on display, researching new material for public view and researching down various channels in the hope of producing and publishing small books which would be made available for sale to the general public over the next 12 - 18 months. Also the care and attention that they take in not only setting up displays but learning about them so they can pass information onto visitors, not forgetting the massive time and effort given by our ancestry section delving into the past to help people from all over the world find their roots ii Newburgh and District.
We are extremely pleased that our visitors have increased by just under 20% on last years which | believe has been helped by our new website and F/B page.
We recently applied for and received a grant to purchase a new computer and laptop to be used for our displays, photographs and collections. These will allow us to take our work with us when we attend events away from the museum and pass our knowledge of local history and ancestry to an even bigger audience.
