Kingseat is accessed by the B979 road and also has pedestrian access to both Newmachar and the Formartine & Buchan Way Trail. The settlement name is visible on maps dating back to 1637 and is said to come from when King Malcolm Canmore rested on a stone on the original Kingseat farm after the slaying of Macbeth at Lumphanan in 1053.  Since then, the area was comprised of multiple farms under various ownerships until the site was acquired by the Aberdeen District Lunacy Board in 1859 for a new mental health facility.  The foundation stone was laid in 1901 with the facility being open to its first patients in 1904.
