3.1 The aim of the SCIO is to be a centre for excellence for local history in the Gala Water valley collecting, recording and preserving artefacts and records of local historical significance for the enjoyment, education and information of all members of the local community and visitors as well as advancing knowledge and understanding of the rich heritage of the Gala Valley and its place within wider Scottish history. We do this by giving history walks and talks, holding a monthly reminiscence group, curating annual exhibitions and hosting a heritage centre in Stow Town Hall

Objectives: 3.1.1 To advance the public education in the history and heritage of Gala Water Valley and to act as a focal point and network for all who are interested in the subject, to encourage the collection, preservation and recording of archives and artefacts and promote their accessibility to the general public and to forge and maintain strategic links with the local community. 3.1.2 To advance the heritage and culture of the local area by providing a heritage experience for the community, and visitors as well as serving as a local heritage visitor attraction and community archive for the recording, restoration and promotion, of the rich history of the Gala Water Valley.
