Structure, Governance and Management
Constitution
The organisation is a charitable trust governed by a deed of trust.
Trustee Recruitment and Appointment
Trustees are recruited from the local environment based on skills they can offer to the organization.
Objectives and Activities
Charitable purposes
-
The advancement of animal welfare by means of the provision of rescue, first aid and rehabilitation of European Hedgehogs (Erinaceus Europaeus) with the aim of expediting a return to the wild wherever possible
-
The advancement of education of the general public as to the plight of the European Hedgehog which is currently on the International Union Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List due to being at risk of species extinction.
Summary of the main activities, achievement and performance
We take in sick, injured and orphaned hedgehogs from all across Fife, Edinburgh and The Lothians. We rehabilitate and release them back into the wild where they originally came from if safe to do so, with the intention of repopulating hedgehogs which are now on the IUCN Red List to “Near Threatened” which is why we do what we can for these remarkable and endangered mammals.
For the last financial year, we took in 226 hedgehogs and released 140 back into the wild which equates to a 62% success rate (Inc.15 hedgehogs euthanised).
At the end of March, we completed our outbuilding with thanks to a massive response from the local community raising funds which enabled us to complete the expansion to the rescue increasing our Fife Council license from 25 to 40 hedgehogs.
Hedgehogs come to Burntisland Hedgehog Haven for a multitude of reasons.
-
Strimmer and garden tool injuries
-
Garden netting and football goal netting entanglements
-
Dog bites and attacks
-
Road casualties
-
High parasite burden
-
High tick infestation
-
Poison ingestion and weedkiller burns just to name a few.
Here we admit the hedgehogs, check them over to determine the ailments and treat accordingly. If circumstances dictate we use St. Clair Vets in Kirkcaldy for more complex issues and of course euthanasia if required.
Engagement from the local community has been phenomenal as they have contributed so much to the funding and day-to-day running of Burntisland Hedgehog Haven.
We regularly hold raffles and tombola at school fayres, and frequently have had stalls at outside events like at The Plant Market Dalgety Bay, Highland Games Day and Civic Parade Week in Burntisland. Andy (trustee) also participates in Half Marathons to generate funding.
On Valentines night we held a bingo night in the local tavern which was a great success. This is an excellent way to increase funding but also spreads hedgehog awareness to the general public at the same time.

Last October ITV’s Good Morning Britain came ‘Live’ from the rescue highlighting the plight of hedgehogs. Also we were lucky enough to feature on the BBC 6pm News, again showing the work we commit to here.
The Scottish Parliament awarded us with a ‘Motion of Parliament’ which was very gratifying.
Animal Star Awards awarded us ‘Highly Commended’ in UK Rescue of the year and then went onto award us the coveted title of ‘Animal Star 2024’ for the whole of the UK.
Andy (trustee) goes out into the community with his ‘Hedgehog Awareness’ Road show to Rainbows/Cubs/Scouts groups, nursery visits and often to the older generation groups and clubs spreading awareness which seems to prove very popular.
All in all its been fantastic year and of course none of this would have been possible without our fantastic team of volunteers that come in on a daily basis with the helping of cleaning cages and caring for the hedgehogs.
Media and socials presence
Burntisland Hedgehog Haven has its own website www.burntislandhedeghoghaven.co.uk which is updated regularly with all the news and progress of the rescue.
Also you can find us on Facebook where we post almost daily.
Future Plans
Going forward we aim to achieve even more releases into the wild and to carry on what we do best - saving and caring for hedgehogs.
The intention is to carry on pushing hedgehog awareness out there online and in person.
Financial review
Income for the period consists of donations from the public and many fundraising activities which amounted to £30,946 for period from 16 October 2023 when the charity was formed to 31 March 2025. Expenditure in that same period was £28,830 leaving a surplus of £2,116 which will be carried forward to the next financial year.
Reserves policy
The Trustees intend to build reserves in order to be in a position where there are several months of running costs in the bank, this would mean that Burntisland Hedgehog Haven would still be able to operate without any financial constraints should the charity enter a lull in fundraising at any time during the coming years.
Reserves at 31 March 2025 were £2,116.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Burntisland Hedgehog Haven
I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 March 2025 set out on pages five to eight
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity's trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1)(a) to (c) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under Section 44(1)(c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of the independent examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations; and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
have not been met; or
- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
