OSCR b. Operational Report Rebranding We gained formal approval of incorporation as a SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisationl in October 2023. Initlally this was under the name of Jaci. In Guarani folklore Jaci is the moon goddess whogave birth to the Amazon River and we had chosen to use her name to reflect our commitment to indigenous communities and women. The original thinkin8 was to have two linked but legally separate organisations-jaci (Scotland) and laci IBrazill- with the Scottish organisation focusing on fundraising and the Brazil organisation working on delivery. Towards the end of 2023 we discovered that Brazilian law does not allow any Brazilian organisation to hold 8 name that is the same or similar to any other organisation, irrespective of location. This meant that for both or8anisations to use the name lor any variation of) Jacl we would need to be legally connected. This would take Jaci into complex legal territory, so we decided to rebrand to ensure that the organisations remain legally separate entities. The name Jaci had been difficult for non-Brazilians to pronounce. so we decided that the Brazilian entity would retain the name Jaci. After some time researching possible names for the Scottish entity, we decided to rebrand 28 Tatha Water. Tatha is the Gaelic word for Tay. and Tatha is 2180 8 Celtic river goddess. It felt important to retain a theme that connects the two names, and Tatha retains the focus on both traditional communities and women. And it feels like it might be a nice organisational story to tell as we grow. In March 2024, we developed the new logo. boughtthe newdomain and set up the newemail and social media accounts. Medialsocial Media We now own three domains-all purchased on Squarespace and managed on Google.. We also have various email addresses for different aspects of the charity business- all currently directed to land in one tathawater.or8 inbox. This is to future-proof as we 8row and to protect against hackinglspam. We have three social media plattorms.. Linkedln, Facebook and Instagram. Linkedln has the most followers as we were able to retain these after the rebranding from J8CI to Tatha. Facebook and Instagram currently have minimal followers. Team Resources

We discovered that charities are eligible for free Canva (design software) account and Tatha Water gained full access to Canva in April 2024. This allows for team members to access the account.

Publications

In mid-2022 we responded to a call requesting case studies from sanitation projects working in challenging contexts from the Sanitation Learning Hub at the Institution of Development Studies. We wrote a case study and this was published in October 2024. The report is called Rural sanitation programming in challenging contexts: Principles, guiding questions and recommendations and can be accessed here. The report was launched on 16[th] October at the Water Institute’s international WASH conference.

Promotional Materials

Towards the start of the year we developed a promotional brochure explaining the project. This can be accessed here. Currently it is only available in Portuguese but we are working on translation.

We put together a promotional film explaining the ecological toilets and water systems, however the quality of the film for the parts explaining the toilets was poor quality and we agreed that it wasn’t high enough quality to use in promotion.

In 2023 BBC Brasil made a mini documentary on rainwater systems. This is a high-quality film which succinctly explains the systems, includes interviews with local residents and provides beautiful visuals that highlight the isolated nature of the households. The main task this year has been to gain permission to subtitle and subdivide this film into shorts suitable for use on social media. During the summer, we managed to subdivide the film into shorts and subtitle each film. Two of these films have been released on social media.

Volunteers

In September 2024, we received an email from Lanna Ribeiro, a Brazilian living in Aberdeen. Lanna had found Tatha via SIDA and reached out to offer her time. Lanna is now supporting Tatha and supporting our work to identify the best path for the formalisation of Jací as charitable entity in Brazil and selecting materials to use on social media.

Training and Development

We applied to three accelerator programmes and one mentoring programme during the 2023-24 period.

6

Quest 2023 – run by The Challenges Group in collaboration with Molson Coors. This was an intensive 5-day residential programme where the aim was for the corporate partners to support six social entrepreneurs in business development.

Female Founders Rise – an 8-week online accelerator programme specifically for female founders that is aimed primarily at business start-ups.

Venture Lab Trust – a 6-month accelerator programme run by The Venture Lab (part of The Challenges Group). It is a mixture of in-person and online support.

6. Financial Review

After a failed attempt to set up a charity bank account with the Co-op Bank, we managed to set up a Charity account with Virgin Bank. Both the Chair and Treasurer have access.

Throughout the year October 2023 – October 2024 Tatha Water had a bank balance of £0. There was no income or expenditure during this period.

After researching fundraising platform options, we approached Raisely - https://www.raisely.com/ - and have now opened an account on their platform. This platform allows for different forms of fundraising, including general organisational fundraising, specific campaigns and crowdfunding.

In October 2024, we submitted two grant applications to the value of £6,500. Both applications were to cover set up costs for the Brazil entity and bi-lingual website development.

a. Statement of the Charity’s Policy on Reserves

Tatha Water has had no financial activity during the reporting period and currently has no reserves. We are aware of the need to develop a policy on financial reserves as we begin to raise funds.

b. Details on any Deficits

Tatha Water currently has no deficits.

c. Donated Facilities and Services

Tatha Water has received donations in kind to cover domain ownership and payment for the SIDA (Scottish International Development Alliance) annual membership fee (£50). All trustees donate their time and work pro-bono. We have one volunteer who has donated their time to support our work.

7. Future Plans

Our priorities for 2024-25 are:

7

8. Additional Information

a. Brazilian Charity Legal Entity

We have begun to research the best ways to set up a ‘sister’ charity as a legal entity in Brazil. This is challenging due to very complex legal frameworks and the origins of the work being within academia. The safest approach is to pay a specialist agency to write the governing documents and manage incorporation. We currently have one quote for this work of £50 per month.

b. Situation in the Amazon

The water and sanitation crisis across the Amazon is now significantly worse. The problem is not just access to clean water, but access to any water at all. Some parts of the river are drying up completely which is directly affecting livelihoods as well as health. The Amazon water crisis is now more urgent than ever.

c. Current/Future work

Our partners in Brazil are currently working to install systems in some new indigenous communities. This is a new partnership and a new beneficiary group. The communities are not river communities and are located inland. The need of these communities is immediate and not in any doubt. The work is still within the academic project and so not yet directly related to Tatha.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Tatha Water [SCIO] (Scottish Charity SC 052880)

I report on the accounts of the charity for the period 10[th] October 2023 to 31[st] October 2024 which are set out on pages 11 to 13.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the 2006 Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner’s statement

My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
