STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Constitution

The charity is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), first registered in its current legal form on 27 September 2023. It has a single tier structure and, as such, the Trustees are members of the charity.

Appointment of Trustees

The Management Committee, which normally meets 3 times per year, are the charity’s Trustees. Membership of the Management Committee includes members from Kinmylies Church of Scotland and Kingsview Associated Presbyterian Church (APC). Trustees are elected at the Annual General Meeting which is held in February.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Charitable Purposes

To engage and support young people in increasing their understanding of the Christian faith and in putting their faith into action. We have four areas of work: schools, churches, communities, and the training and development of volunteers in youth work.

Activities

In August 2024, the charity recruited a Schools and Families Worker who runs weekly Scripture Union groups (SUPA Clubs) in the 3 local primary schools (Kinmylies, Muirtown and Dochgarroch) and the local secondary school (Charleston Academy). Currently there are 5 primary groups and 1 secondary group, attracting on average a total of 90 pupils. Particularly encouraging is the number of former P7 pupils who have been attending the secondary SU group in Charleston Academy.

The Schools and Families Worker is regularly invited into the schools to deliver Religious and Moral Education (RME), including a weekly series on the Fruit of the Spirit in Dochgarroch Primary School, a weekly block in Muirtown Primary School looking at famous Bible stories,

various one-off lessons including harvest, various activity mornings in the Kinmylies church building, and regular RME in the run up to Christmas. In addition, she delivers school assemblies in Muirtown and Kinmylies Primaries once a month.

The Schools and Families Worker currently spends one afternoon per week in Muirtown Primary, generally supporting the life of the school by assisting with reading groups and with small groups of children who require more sustained support with homework activities. She also helps with a leadership group every second Friday afternoon.

With the help of volunteers, including 12 teenagers, she runs a weekly Monday Club for P2P7 age group, with 59 children on the register and attracting around 47 each week. Virtually all of these children are from the local community. Recently started is the fortnightly Monday Club Plus for those in P7 – S3 age group, providing an opportunity for further work with and development of these young people.

During the last week of the summer holidays the Schools and Families Worker, along with a number of volunteers, ran a summer club on an Olympic theme. An evening club ran each evening for those going into P5 – S2, and a morning club from Wednesday to Friday for those going into P2 - P4. This was followed by a family fun morning on the Saturday which was very well attended by families from the community, including some with whom there had been no previous contact.

A number of local children attended weekend residential events at SU’s Alltnacriche centre. 9 local children attended the primary weekend in September and 7 attended the secondary weekend in November.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

Demand for places at the weekly Monday Club remain high, with the restriction on numbers only due to the ongoing challenge of recruiting sufficient volunteers to assist with the running of the club.

Of particular encouragement are the numbers of pupils the Schools and Families Worker is able to engage with, including the excellent numbers attending the various SUPA Clubs and residential activities, and the various opportunities to engage in the wider life of the schools.

We are hugely encouraged by the ongoing financial commitment of those regularly giving to the Project, providing financial stability both for the ongoing regular work and also for future planning.

FINANCE

Income

Our main source of funding is from regular giving by supporters of the Project, most of which is also Gift Aided. We also receive an annual gift from Kingsview APC Church.

The Trustees recently agreed that a significant gift received with a particular request regarding its use would be set aside to enable children to attend residential events who would not otherwise be able to do so.

Reserves Policy

Currently, the Trust’s policy is to retain 3 months’ worth of normal running costs in order to meet commitments and to cover any unexpected expenditure. Three months’ expenditure currently stands at £9,000 and reserves are significantly in excess of this at over £33,000. The Trustees will continue to monitor the ongoing financial situation.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

The intention is to continue to look for opportunities to develop the Project, depending on both demand and the availability of volunteer assistance.

It is hoped to develop further ways to engage with Charleston Academy.

A key focus is to encourage young people to book for 2025 SU Holidays, including providing financial support where appropriate.

A dedicated email list has been started to encourage prayer support via monthly newsletters. We would look to grow this list as the year goes on.
