Structure, Governance & Management
Governing Document:
The Goodies was recognised as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) on the 7[th] June 2023
Trustee Recruitment & Appointment:
At each AGM, the members may elect any member (unless he/she is debarred from membership under clause 63 of the Constitution) to be a charity trustee. All of the charity trustees elected/appointed shall retire from office, but shall then be eligible for re-election.
A charity trustee retiring at an AGM will be deemed to have been re-elected unless: -
(a) they advise the Management Committee prior to the conclusion of the AGM that they do not wish to be re-appointed as a charity trustee; or
(b) an election process was held at the AGM and they were not among those elected/re-elected through that process; or
(c) a resolution for the re-election of that charity trustee was put to the AGM and was not carried.
Objectives & Activities
The Charities Charitable Purpose:
As set out in the ‘Constitution’ and ‘The Charities and Trustee Investments (Scotland) Act 2005’ the purpose(s) of Goodies SCIO are the following: -
-
the prevention or relief of poverty
-
the relief of those in need by reason of age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage
Any other purpose that may reasonably be regarded as analogous to any of the preceding purposes.
Summary of the main activities in relation to these objectives:
-
Goodies SCIO is engaged in the redistribution of surplus food products and other goods from supermarkets, cafes, universities, and other companies. Goodies collect items every day of the week and redistribute them to people on low incomes or living below the poverty line, including families, refugees, the homeless, students, and the elderly. Items are given to community centres, women’s refuge shelters, homeless hostels, and other community projects. Goodies organises weekly food distribution events and offer items on a donationbasis. Food is always distributed on a non-discriminatory basis.
-
Goodies operates a café where freshly cooked meals are served at a low-price using food collected to prevent waste. During the week, there is a varied programme of art classes, talks, cultural events, and other activities to welcome the community. The café is a warm, welcoming space that brings the community together and tackles issues of loneliness and food poverty.

Achievement & Performance to June 25
June 2024 to June 2025 has been a year of growth and consolidation for Goodies. Operations at the café have expanded to include a frequent programme of daytime activities and evening events. The team is growing, and there is a strong focus on developing fundraising, outreach, and volunteer coordination strategies. Highlights from our year include:
Zero Waste Initiatives:
In Goodies’ second year, over 120 tonnes of items have been saved, totalling over 220 tonnes rescued since incorporation in June 2023. Goodies is also reducing carbon emissions by transitioning to the use of cargo bikes on our local collection and distribution routes.
Staff:
Thanks to funding received at the end of last financial year, Goodies has been able to employ one full-time and one part-time member of staff this year which has enabled a stable running of the café and the day-to-day operations. The project manager and café supervisor are critical members of the team who have helped grow the café into a welcoming community space for visitors and manage the logistical operations.
Volunteers:
There has been a large increase in the number of volunteers at Goodies in the past year. There are now 25 active people on our volunteer database, who all give their time to help make things happen at Goodies. Some of our volunteers spend five days a week helping out in the café, several have introduced exciting new initiatives and activities, and others are working behind the scenes to assist with event planning and fundraising.
The Goodies Shop:
Goodies’ new location, in the Grange area of Edinburgh, has been undergoing refurbishment since the end of April and it due to open in the coming months. It will stock a range of rescued and refurbished goods, function as a storage and sorting space, and be a base for our operations. This is a big development for Goodies as it provides a more permanent and independent space for the team to work from.
The weekly art classes:
Led by two volunteer art tutors, there have been 34 art classes held between November 2024 and July 2025. The classes are well attended, with an average of 9.3 attendees per class a high of 23. Each week, the group focus on a new theme and work with a variety of materials to produce items such as collages, cards, and other crafts. Ages range from children as young as 5 to adults 50 and above. Some members of the class have additional needs and there is an educational psychologist present during each session to support the team as needed. There has been an overwhelmingly positive response
to the classes and many people attend every week. The classes have helped to provide a constructive, social, and creative occasion to bring people in the community together.

These range from cultural-themed dinners, Christmas dinner at the Greyfriars Charteris Centre and in our community cafe, a ceilidh fundraising event with a student-led local charity, Slurp, and a series of lunchtime talks on nutrition and health. There are also other activities that take place at the café, such as a regular games group and crochet class, who produce crocheted items that are available for purchase. Fundraising: With a new group of volunteers focusing on fundraising, Goodies has been fortunate enough to receive multiple grants and partnership opportunities in the last year. In December, Goodies was selected as the winner of the ‘Make It Happen’ campaign run bya local creative studio, DaySix. Through this opportunity, DaySix has redesigned the Goodies website and helping to ensure that people can find the information they need. Goodies also received funding for purposes including purchasing an electric cargo bike and van for food collections, running a series of support groups for men, training new volunteers on cargo bikes, getting some uniforms for the team, and covering core costs. Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. Basis of independent examiner's statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, | do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

-
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
