Objectives
Melrose FC SCIO charitable purposes are to:

(a) To serve the community by contributing to the improvement of recreational, environmental, health and emotional opportunities to children, young people, adults and families by increasing participation in football - engendering a love of the game for all players.

(b) The advancement of community participation in sport as players, coaches, officials, volunteers and supporters regardless of age, race, religion and gender.

(c) To provide, develop, manage and promote recreational facilities and related recreational activities available to the whole community, improving the quality of life for all involved and providing opportunity.

(d) To advance the education of young people, children and adults by providing opportunity to participate in the playing and teaching of community football, developing their mental and physical capabilities and so enable them to improve their quality of life.

(e) The advancement of community development and relationships by operating a community based and run football club which makes a positive social impact in Melrose and across the whole of the Scottish Borders.
Summary of the main activities September 2024 to August 2025
Melrose FC in a volunteer-led, not-for-profit community football club that delivers the opportunity for junior and youth football participation from age 5-16+ for young people who live in Melrose and the surrounding area. The Club also supports the opportunity for adults to play recreational and competitive football through Melrose Adult Football.
Melrose Football Club SCIO has provided football training and match play to our junior membership through affiliated organisations including the Scottish Youth Football Association, Scottish Women’s Football and the Scottish Borders Junior Football Association. Registered player numbers have remained healthy over this reporting period at approximately 325, including approximately 110 girls.
Our 2013 boys team successfully transitioned from junior to youth football, although our 2010 squad folded. The 2020 intake on the boys side in August 2025 was comparatively low but we expect the team to grow in the next reporting period.
Our girls’ section has continued to attract girls from around the Borders and we are now the largest girls’ football club in the Borders. We formed a new G16 team and maintained teams at G8, G10, G12 and G14. The G6 intake has been comparatively high.
Melrose FC is currently maintaining 7 junior boys teams, 2 youth boys teams, 5 junior girls teams and 2 youth girls teams. We have also provided the structure for men and women’s recreational football with two sessions for men per week and one session for women serving approximately 70 adult players.

In a new initiative in this reporting period, Melrose FC has pioneered a unique football offering in the Borders with sessions for neurodivergent children aged 5-12. Melrose FC Fun Football has been supported by the SFA, Team United, SportedScotland and McDonalds. A pilot block ran from April to June 2025, and we have now secured funding for a permanent offering in the next reporting period. We currently have 33 children registered to take part in Fun Football and are welcoming new players every month. In October 2025, post this reporting period, Melrose FC Fun Football was awarded “Best Para Football Project 2025” at the Scottish Football Association Grassroots Awards.
Additionally, our Coach Development Officer, Garry Fraser, has been shortlisted for ScottishPower Women’s Football Awards for Youth Coach of the Year.
This continued success of Melrose FC is testament to our volunteer coaches and their dedication and commitment. Other achievements in this period include:

We have achieved funding from Scottish Borders Council for Project POWER UP: the refurbishment and extension of our Headquarters to include two new changing rooms. Funding has also been secured from the William Hill Trust, the Scottish Football Partnership Trust, the Fallago Fund and ClubSport. We will be applying for match funding from the SFA when the facilities fund application window opens in 2026.

Our 2012 team participated in the Blackpool Cup after a significant fundraising effort by Club, players and parents. A successful tournament for the team has provided lasting memories for the players.

To meet our commitment to the community and encourage more sport for more people in Melrose, we have advertised the offerings of other sports clubs in Melrose through our newsletter including Peebles netball.

We have worked closely with Melrose Rugby Club to develop a positive and cooperative relationship to encourage the sharing of facilities, coordination of events and minimise competition over players and training venues. We have been a pivotal player in achieving SCIO status for The Greenyards Sports and Heritage Foundation, known as ‘The Greenyards Foundation’ which seeks to enhance sporting and heritage facilities in Melrose. Melrose FC Chair Greg Simpson is a trustee of the new SCIO.

We are very grateful to our existing sponsors who help provide kit and equipment for our players including CGI, Ferguson Planning, pmgd and CSY Architects Ltd. We have brought new sponsors on board with the addition of MacVicars of Melrose butchers, GreenTweed Eco and BSPC.

Notes to the Accounts
for the year ended 31st August 2025
1. Basis of accounting
These accounts have been prepared on the Receipts and Payments basis in accordance with the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended).
2. Nature and purpose of funds
Unrestricted funds are of a general nature and have no conditions attached. Unrestricted funds may be used at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the objects of the charity.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for restricted purposes.

There were no trustee's renumeration or other benefits for the year ended 31 August 2025 (2024: £nil).

Independent Examiner's Report
for the year ended 31st August 2025
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31st August 2025.
Respective responsibilities of Trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner's statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
Independent examiner's statement
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention other than disclosed below
