Principal address

Evergreen Hall Dovecote Street Hawick TD9 9YQP

Recruitment and appointment of trustees

All of the Association’s Trustees are appointed or re-appointed by the members at our Annual General Meeting.

Founding document

The Charity is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation, governed by its constitution, registered as a charity from 17th April 2023 (Registration number SC052483) and established to replace Hawick Senior Citizens Association (Registration number SC032447).

Charitable purposes

Hawick Senior Citizens is a non-profit making voluntary organisation which aims to relieve the needs of persons in Hawick and its environs who are in need by reason of age and to provide, or assist in the provision of facilities for education, recreation, or other leisure-time pursuits of such persons in the interests of social welfare and improvement of quality of life.

Membership

Hawick Senior Citizens has 58 full members (2024, 61) and 21 associate members (2024, 21).

Activities and achievements

The Evergreen Hall is owned by Hawick Senior Citizens who use it to run functions and events in pursuit of the group’s objectives. The group runs a weekly Thursday Lunch Club, twice weekly (Tuesday and Friday) afternoon carpet bowling sessions, and a weekly Wednesday morning fitness class for seniors. In addition to serving their primary objective, these functions offer the chance for social interaction and community inclusion. Special occasions (Christmas, Common Riding, Burns Nights, National Events, etc.) are also marked through dedicated lunches with associated entertainment. Importantly, the group keeps its members aware of relevant issues through speaker attendance and promotion of initiatives.

The group is conscious that an income stream is required to fund its various activities and running costs and to this end makes the Evergreen Hall available for hire, whether it be for regular weekly or monthly functions or one-off occasions. This income allows repairs and regular maintenance in the Hall to be carried out by suitably qualified tradesmen on an ad-hoc basis.

Activities and achievements (contd)

During the year, the group commissioned an energy efficiency survey, which highlighted several issues which could be addressed to help reduce running costs and energy emissions. As a result, the group invested in a new heating system, additional roofspace insulation, the provision of LED light fittings, and hall redecoration. Other improvement works carried out were the provision of new window blinds, and increased storage space, and purchase of a new cooker/oven. With the exception of a £500 grant from a local group, the cost of these works (£23.5K approx) were met from group funds.

The group recognises the importance of dialogue with other like-minded bodies at regional and national level and participates in meetings with Border Seniors Networking, Borders Welfare Network, Borders Community Action, Age Scotland, etc.

Financial Review

The Accounts show net payments of £15,802 for the year. Unrestricted funds amounted to £20,690 at 31st August 2025 and the Committee are satisfied that the charity has sufficient funding to continue to fulfil its objectives for the foreseeable future.

Reserve policy

The Trustees policy is to maintain a modest balance on reserve, amounting to between one and two year’s expenditure, to enable the Charity to fund any unplanned repairs to the hall or other unexpected items of expenditure.
