St George’s SCIO - Chairperson’s Report

We opened in June 2024 to transform a redundant Church building into a community centre. The previous community centre closed in 2018. Since opening, we have overcome challenges and grown into a thriving hub housing many activities.

We offer classes, educational courses, health and fitness sessions and social events designed to reduce isolation and bring people together. Our people are not only participants but also active contributors to our work. They volunteer to run services, shape new initiatives and share their lived experiences to ensure that our activities reflect real community needs.

Our regular food bank, the Grub Hub,is run by one of our volunteers, whilst others organise clothing provision for children and adults, and distribute baby essentials. In this way,our services are delivered with empathy and understanding, whilst also giving our volunteers opportunity to build skills, confidence and connections. This shared ownership makes St George’s a community driven resource co-created and sustained by the people it serves.

We work closely with other local groups to ensure that our programme complements existing services.Recently,in partnership with other local groups,we hosted a collaborative Christmas event which was a huge success. It was fun,it built bonds, and it strengthened relationships within the community. Collaboration extends beyond events e.g. our driver supplies a neighbouring foodbank. Our partnerships are built on mutual trust, shared effort and collective care, and the residents benefit from a wider coordinated network of services.

Tillydrone is recognised as one of the most deprived areas in Scotland (SIMD Scottish index of Multiple Deprivation),our residents face the daily challenges of poverty, discrimination and disadvantage. We exist to stand with them and offer support.Everything we do is rooted in compassion and a commitment to build a stronger, fairer community together.
