Structure, Governance and Management
Constitution
The Charity is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (a SCIO). It was registered in its current legal form on 23 January 2023. The charity was previously an unincorporated association but changed its legal form to a SCIO. It has a single tier structure and as such the trustees are the members of the charity.
Appointment of trustees
The management committee, which normally meets quarterly, are the charity’s trustees. To allow for some continuity of the committee it is also open to interested members of the community on a voluntary basis. Trustees are elected at the annual general meeting which is held in Spring. There must be a minimum of four and a maximum of eight trustees including the Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary.
Objectives and Activities
Charitable purposes
The charitable purpose of the PJ foundation is to:

Relieve the needs of children, young people and their families impacted during their time in hospital or recovery at home.

To advance health through educational and research provision to clinical groups dealing with children and young people living with GI or liver disease in the support of further studies in furtherance of these purposes.
Activities
In 2023, the PJ Foundation took a huge but exciting step to become a SCIO. Since then, the Board of the Trustees continue to be focused on:

Developing its governance platform (compliance).

Building its team of trustees and volunteers.

Developing partnerships with key agencies in Scotland to make a positive difference to young lives e.g. Organ Donation Scotland, Scottish Government and West Lothian College.
In addition, the PJ Foundation continues to:

a) Fund raise to support projects and research.

b) Raise awareness of organ and tissue donation.
-
c) Improve the reach and content of its PJ Foundation website and social media channels.
Achievements and Performance
Throughout the reporting period, key achievements of the charity include:
-
Raising just under £1,500 through fund raising, events and donations including participation in the Ben Nevis Challenge and Sky Dive.

Using money raised to support local causes like unlocking improved accessibility for groups and individuals like Bike Mobility and driving lessons.

Collaborating with Organ Donation Scotland to produce and release the “Light The Peaks Pink” video during Organ Donation Week (click here) to raise awareness of the NHS Organ Donation Register. Pink is the colour of the NHS Organ Donor Card, and the initiative aims to encourage families to discuss organ donation wishes and increase donor registration.

Supported a new partnership with Organ Donation Scotland and South Lanarkshire College, working with creative media students to develop awareness raising reels for social media.

Delivering with Christmas gifts to children receiving care at Birmingham Children’s Hospital as well as supporting “Advent Doors”, a Christmas initiative hosted by Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity which provided a magical experience of music and lights for children and young people across the hospital.

Engaging with NHS Scotland, Organ Donation Scotland and other relevant organisations, largely through the Scottish Donor Transplant Group and associated ODT networks, to help provide a more patient/family centred perspective on facing the challenges of organ and tissue donation in Scotland.
Financial review
The source of funding for the charity to date are donations from the public obtained mainly from events held throughout the period. The intention from our donators has been to use the funds to fulfil the objectives listed above. The trustees’ policy is to retain £1,000 within the charity bank account to cover any normal running costs as well as any unexpected expenditure.
Plans for future period
The Trustees intend to build on the work carried out so far with 3 main areas of focus being:

Care for and support children, young people and families living with illness through variety of community initiatives.

Work with partners like healthcare providers in supporting in the care needs of children and young people and those facing or faced with child bereavement.

Continue to raise awareness of organ donation in Scotland especially through connecting with young people in Scotland.
