Objectives and Activities

Tummies Not Trash: A Community-Driven Solution to Food Waste

At Tummies Not Trash, we believe good food should never go to waste when there are people who can use it. We saw a problem: supermarkets and retailers were regularly forced to discard perfectly edible food due to seasonal offers, stock changes, and best-before dates. While many stores do donate surplus food, these partnerships can be restrictive—some charities can only take certain types of food, and the rest still ends up in the bin.

We take a different approach. Instead of collecting food for a predetermined purpose, we collect all edible food that would otherwise go to waste and distribute it across a network of local groups that can use it. This means more food reaches more people—whether it’s schools, early years facilities, breakfast and lunch clubs, social groups, hostels, community centres, libraries, or even animal charities. Some partners cook meals on-site, others create food-sharing areas for people to collect what they need.

Our reach has grown even further with the creation of our own food hub, open daily to anyone who can use the food—whether for themselves and their families, or others in their community. Unlike traditional models, we don’t impose referral barriers or means-testing, because preventing food waste benefits everyone.

Run entirely by volunteers, Tummies Not Trash isn’t just about redistributing surplus food—it’s about bringing people together around a shared mission. As our community grows, so does the willingness of individuals to get involved, making a real impact on food waste while supporting one another.

We are more than a charity; we are a movement—one where everyone has a role to play.

Structure, governance and management

Type of governing document

The charity is governed in accordance with its constitution. Trustee recruitment and appointment

Trustees are appointed by the Board in accordance with the charity’s Constitution. At each AGM, one third of the trustees retire by rotation. Trustees are eligible for re-appointment. No external organisation has the power to appoint trustees.

Board of Trustees Update & Recruitment

At our AGM in February 2024, joined the Board of Trustees, while stepped down from her role. In April 2024, also stepped down after reassessing her availability to commit to Tummies Not Trash. Later in the year, in November 2024, a long-standing supporter and volunteer—applied to join the board and was co-opted as a trustee in December 2024.

Tummies Not Trash operates a rolling recruitment process for trustee positions, in accordance with our constitution. When vacancies arise, applications can be submitted to the trustees at any time. We actively encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, recognizing the value of diverse skills and experiences in strengthening our leadership.

Prospective trustees should have a strong understanding of Tummies Not Trash’s work, align with our values, and demonstrate a commitment to reducing food waste. Applications are reviewed by the board, with decisions made at the next scheduled meeting. Trustees appointed through co-option serve until the next AGM, where they may stand for election as full board members.

Achievements and Performance Although we are a small and young charity, we have a growing list of support. Since receiving our charitable status in Dec 2022 Tummies Not Trash have saved over 100 TONNES of food from being thrown away by food retailers We have 62 volunteers We regu]arly support local organisations and charities in Edinburgh, Meaning a¢ro&s the city 10(K)s of people benefit from receiTring our fo(Ml every week. We Currently collect from 28 stores and have a waiting list for more when volunteers become available. Our Impact: A Year of Groivth and Achievement In our second year, Tummies Not Trash made a significant increase in our impact by rescuing an incredible 162 tonnes of food from going to landfdl. Bringing the total saved over our first two years to over 300 tonnes. Instead of being lI￿own away, this food was redistributed to local communities, steadily expanding our reach throughout the year. We have built a strong and growing network of store partners who donate surplus food seven days a week, ensuring food no longer goes to waste at these stores. Our efforts now extend across multiple communities, focusing on west and central Edinburgh in our first year and gradually expanding to south west, with additional teams developing in east and mid Lothian. As we continue to grow, our focus remains on making food redistribution as efficient, accessible, and impactful as possible. pen days e've been delighted to support 'ome of our partners, community en days, where we've had the ance to speak directly with ervice users about how Tummies ot Trash is making a real impact n reducing food waste in the "ommunity

This provides a welcoming space where people can come together, share a meal, and connect with others. By using surplus food to create nutritious meals, we're not only tackling food waste but also fostering a sense of belonging and support Christmas 2024 We knew that, in addition to having the hub open, access to food on Christmas Eve would be essential to prevent food waste while the stores were closed. . We were delighted to partner with the 150th Craigahnond Scout Hall, where we set up an accessible distribution point on Christmas Eve evening. This allowed us to provide lorry loads of food, ensuring that food did not go to waste during the festive season.

Financial review

Statement of the charity’s policy on reserves

The trustees aim to hold sufficient reserves to enable the charity to continue to operate for the foreseeable future. As the charity has very low levels of committed expenditure, it is not considered necessary to hold substantial reserves.

Details of any deficit

There are no funds in deficit.

Donated facilities and services

We would like to extend our thanks to all of our volunteers for their tireless commitment to preventing food waste. Week after week, they dedicate their time to collecting food from our store partners and distributing it through our hub and wider network. Without these incredible individuals, we simply wouldn’t be able to carry out the work we do or have anywhere near the same impact.

We also want to express our deep gratitude to the organisations that have placed their trust in us and provided funding, allowing us to continue our work throughout the year:

• Johnston Smillie Charitable Trust

• Edinburgh Communities Climate Action Network - Greenlight Fund

• City of Edinburgh Council - Community Grants Fund

• The Robertson Trust - Wee Grants Fund

• Sainsbury’s - Good Food for All of Us Fund

• Lidl Community Fund

• The Gillian Stevenson Charitable Trust

To the church of the Nazarene for use of the facilities in order to host our community lunch club.

A special thank you to all of our store partners for their ongoing support and generosity. We are proud to be partnered with organisations committed to reducing waste.

Finally, thank you to our community - both local and across Edinburgh - for your unwavering support and for spreading the word about Tummies Not Trash to friends and loved ones. Your encouragement and advocacy help us grow and make an even greater difference

Future Plans

Looking ahead, we are committed to continuing our volunteer recruitment efforts to expand our impact on food collections and strengthen our community hub. We also plan to deepen our support for local schools and breakfast clubs while growing the reach of our own Community Lunch Club.

As demand for our services increases, we are now exploring the possibility of opening additional hubs and expanding our team to ensure we can support this growth effectively. Our goal is to make an even greater impact, reducing food waste while fostering a stronger, more connected community.
