Objectives and activities
Purpose of the Charity
The Men’s Shed movement exists to promote general wellbeing, continuing education and a healthy lifestyle for all men 18years old and older. The aims are to:
-
Provide a safe space for men to enjoy each other’s company, indulge in a range of activities, be creative and learn new skills.
-
Meet and chat with other men over tea, coffee and put the world to rights.
-
Boost a feeling of self-worth through contributing to community projects, working in partnership with other local organisations, assisting each other and enjoying fun and friendship.
-
Although Men’s Sheds are predominantly aimed at men, women may also join and take part in shared sessions.
Activities
Our primary activities are the meetings of our members to fulfil the purposes of the charity. Apart from the Thursday gathering we hold sessions at the workshop in North Queensferry, making various items and generally having a great time in each other’s company.
We currently have nearly 40 members and know that our membership will increase once we have a proper base in Rosyth. We meet once a week at the Parkgate Community Centre, drinking too much tea and putting the world to rights. We have a great time in each other’s company and those attending get genuine enjoyment out of these gatherings. A couple of times a week we also get together at the temporary Workshop in North Queensferry where many things are created and sold to help raise funds for the Shed.
We also work within the community on various projects to the betterment of those living in Rosyth and surrounding areas.
You will get a good understanding of our success in the Achievements and Performance section later in this report.
4
Structure, governance and management
Constitution
Rosyth Men’s Shed is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (a SCIO). It was registered in its current legal form on 22 August 2022. The charity was previously an unincorporated association but changed its legal form to a SCIO. The assets of the unincorporated association were transferred to the SCIO on 1 September 2022.
It has a single tier structure and as such the trustees are the members of the charity.
Trustee recruitment and appointment
Some of the Management Committee, which normally meets on the first Thursday of each month, are also charity’s trustees. We also have Trustees who are not members of the Management Committee. This ensures representation from everyone involved with the Rosyth Men’s Shed.
Membership of the management committee is open to all members of the Rosyth Men’s Shed.
In accordance with the Constitution, Trustees hold office for three years after which they put themselves forward for re-election at the AGM.
There must be a minimum of three and a maximum of four trustees.
5
Achievements and performance
We have had a very busy year carrying out many projects in the Rosyth local community and fundraising through the sale of items made in our workshop.
As our exploits are documented in Facebook we attract a lot of attention from organisations and residents looking for assistance.
The efforts of the members in the Workshop are very popular within the Rosyth Community and beyond. For example, we held an open day at the workshop which was well attended.
We installed a Christmas tree on behalf of the Rosyth Community Council and erected the Nativity Scene for the Rosyth Parish Church. Both activities were well received by the local community.
We partnered with St John’s Primary Scholl to paint 2 classrooms while other funding was not available to the school.
Once again, our members supplied assistance to the Rosyth Gala over 3 days. Jobs varied from stall building, dismantling and marshalling on the day to ensure smooth running and an enjoyable experience for visitors to the Gala. A couple of members also assist at the monthly Community Market held on the last Sunday of each month.
Our fundraising efforts are going quite well focusing on the day to day running of the Shed and saving money to implement the move to our permanent home in Rosyth in as timely a manner as possible. These efforts have been very productive with donations received from various sources. We also continue to take voluntary subscriptions from our members at our various meetings.
We have improved our skills on the tools at the workshop and have managed to add Laser Engraving to our portfolio.
Our members all enjoy learning new skills and working together.
6 ~~a~~
The Woodworking, Pen and Spurtle making skills have been very productive in our fundraising efforts and we have had success with sales at the local Community Market.
We had a very interesting project at the beginning of 2024, assisting the NQ Community Trust convert the bow of an abandoned boat into a shelter for visitors to the pier.
The Rosyth Community Hub, Eats Rosyth, asked for assistance in carrying out some alterations within the café area. As always, we were up for the challenge and helped the changes to the layout of the Customer Service area.
Finally, let’s not forget that we are not just a hard working group at the Shed. We also enjoyed a few social events including our ever-popular Bowling Competitions. We have had some great nights at the bowling alley in Dunfermline.
7
Financial review
This is our second year as a fully incorporated charity.
We have several sources of income. Voluntary Subscriptions are paid by members if they wish. There is also fundraising through donations for work carried out and from sales at the local market. We have also received donations from local companies. We did receive a donation from the COVID Recovery Fund, however, this funding is restricted to the implementation of the permanent home for the Rosyth Mens Shed within Rosyth.
We now have a committee member who is a very focused Fund Raiser and has helped keep the roof over our heads with his efforts.
Statement of the charity’s policy on reserves
We have nearly £40,000 that may be classed as reserves. However, this money is a restricted donation received from the COVID Recovery Fund and can only be used for the implementation of the permanent site in Rosyth
Details of any deficit
There is no deficit in this reporting period
Donated facilities and services
The Rosyth Men’s Shed occupy a workshop at the North Queensferry Marina, rented to us by the North Queensferry Community Trust. Our plan is to give this back to the North Queensferry Trust as a thriving workshop for the local community when we move to our permanent home in Rosyth.
8
Future plans
Our primary focus is acquiring land within Rosyth so that the Rosyth Men’s Shed can have a permanent home.
Our work within the local community continues to grow and long may that continue.
We have built many good relationships with other Men’s Sheds and companies. This is proving to be very beneficial and is essential in achieving our goal next financial year.
