Charlty Trustees
Objectives and actfvitles
Covid, its lockdowns and all th8 8ssociated issues had a parti(xJlarly
harsh effect on young people Just at that point in their INe5 when they
shwld have been enjoying university. their first job5, new relationships
arKI lrfe in general. The 18-35yr olds were already the generation with
the fastest increase in mental health issues and lockdown's isolation
exacerbated that resuftirKJ in a number of young people feeling that the
'ladder of lrfe" had been kicked oul from under them
Our Isles and Oceans was set up to help get that ladder back up arKI
to gNe those young people the seff*steern and Confiden￿ needed to
help them climb it again and to get them into or back into sustainable
livellhoods where they are contsibutiThJ to T￿)CAety rather than being a
potential drain on it.
The sea has no frierKI or foe and is a great leveller and those who sail
on it must work together and communi12te. They have no altemative
other than to °get on with if as you can't just get off a boat so we set
up a sail training programme to help Ihose apptying get a sailing
qualrfication but also to help them rebuild their self-esteem and to
regain their confidence.
The ultimale goal. having gone through the basic saAI trainlng
prograrnme was for a number of benefi(aaries to apply to do a leg of
the CliN)er Round the Wortd Yacht Race. Thls would involve them
gaining advanced sail training and h8viNJ a lrf&chaThJing experience
on the world's oc*ans as part of a 22 person crew.

Trustee recruitment and appointment
stood down during the year {3￿ May 2024). There
was 8 reassessment of the future direction of the Charity and ts abilty
to deliver its original aKns following
e8*3nation as the
rnlationship with Clipper suffered some s
at arourKI the same
time.
ac
Flnal deci81on8 were left perKllng the Grmpletion of the Clipper Round
The Worfd Race 21Y23-24 and to those Our Isles benefidaries who
were taking part finishing their respective legs.
The remaining Tfustees met on Friday 20th September 2024 and
rasoTr4ed tha( as the relationship with Clipper had irretrievably brthk8n
down and that there was no other affordable Means of delivering the
Charl￿S objectives and activities, the chanty would ath to be wound
up.

Achlèvements and perfomianc•
Having put 79 young people Ihrough an Inhlal training wogramme with
great success, 3(xn8 20 applied to do the Clipper Race. From those, 6
were selected, did their advanced training. Of those 5 went on to
complete their legs of the race - a massive achievement for tham and
a life changing experience.
The biggest successes have been the changes in mindset, confidence
and self*esteem in the vast majonty of the 79 original beneficiaries and
even more so in the 5 who went on to do the race. Getting young
people to regain their self•esteem and seN•confidence to the poinl
where they have got into or bad( into employment or apprenticeships
with some of them having taken the hugè declsion to change the
course of thelr careers ha8 made a Img difference.

Financlal revlew
After the successes of the year to 2023, lundraising dropped away in
2024 as focus fell to ensuring the ra￿ was a success for those taklng
part. It then Stop￿ whilst the Trustees declded on the future of the
Charity.
The Charity raised £2,405.81 between donations and furKJraising
activities. It spent £6,148 on flights, vaccines and ac¢ommDdation for
those taking part in the Clipper Ra￿ and £3528 on administratiorrfset
up costs leaving a deficit in the year of £7.270.34
Statement of the chanty's policy on reserves
The Charity likes to hold a small reserve of £2.500 to cover any
immediate unforeseen expenditure. It had £4.154.68 at the year end.
Details of any defiul
Th? deficit for the year ¢xcurred as a result of the change in focus
fr(xn fundraising to ddivery Ixrt in the knowledge that the Charity had
built up reserves last year of £11.425. Whilst there was uncertainty
around the future of the Charity from May onwards, fundraising
activities stopped perKling decAsions being taken.
Donated facililies and services
The Charity has no donated facilities or services

Futuro plans
After the great suc(xsses ad)ieved In it's ffi￿t 18 months, the change
in the relationship with Clipper, the change in the economy generally
and our inabilty to find an altematfve cost-effectNe solution for the sail
training, the decision has been taken to apply to wind up the Charty.
