**NORTHERN FRIENDS YOUTH EVENTS SCIO** **Scottish Charity No: SC051778** ## **TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT: 01.01.2024 - 31.12.2024** ## **Trustees** ## **Contact Address** ## **Appointment of Trustees** Trustees are appointed by General Meeting for Scotland, Northumbria Area Meeting and Teesdale & Cleveland Area Meeting and Cumberland Area Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), or their successor bodies, in accordance with our governing Constitution. Trustees are normally appointed for a period of three years and may be reappointed for a second term. Trustees may also be appointed directly by the Trustees. There must always be between 4 and 8 Trustees. Under the terms of the Constitution, it is not required that the Treasurer of the SCIO be a Trustee, and the Trustees may co-opt a Treasurer from outside the body of Trustees. Although not applicable to this year, remains Treasurer although he stepped down as a Trustee on 31 December 2024. 1 ## **Constitution** The charity is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation governed by a Constitution registered on 08 June 2022. Trustees are appointed as described in above. The operation of the SCIO and the Trustees is overseen by one of the appointing Area / General Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends (referred to as the Sponsoring AM/GM) on a three-year rotating basis. The Clerk to the Trustees will always come from the Sponsoring AM/GM. The Sponsoring group during the period to which this report relates is Scotland General Meeting. ## **Purposes of the Charity** The furtherance of the general religious and charitable purposes of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Britain particularly by organising events for young people to promote the education of the ideals which uphold the Quaker testimonies of equality, peace, simplicity and truth. ## **Activities of the Charity during the period 1.01.2024 – 31.12.2024** ## **Summer Shindig 2024** In a change to the previous few years, Summer Shindig was moved from Ackworth School, Yorkshire, to the Field Studies Council (FSC) facility at Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae on the west coast of Scotland. This was done primarily to provide a venue accessible to all, as Ackworth could not accommodate those in wheelchairs. The event was from Saturday 27 July to Saturday 3 August 2024. Pam Currie and Elliot Kirk were co-clerks. Co-coordinators. also acted as Safeguarding Coordinator. was Site Liaison Coordinator (important for the move to the new venue) and undertook a new role of Young Persons Needs’ Coordinator. Prior to the event, due to a late personal commitment, (co-coordinator) had to step back from attending. However, the strength and depth of experience in the remainder of the team meant this was not an issue. The training weekend at Bonaly, south of Edinburgh was successful although we should reflect on the needs and impressions of new staff – we had a larger number of new and/or inexperienced staff this year and some found the training weekend rather overwhelming, perhaps reflecting the very challenging experience of 2023 shindig rather than a ‘normal’ year. 2 Nonetheless the staff team ‘came together’, jobs were allocated and staff left with a clear idea of what was expected, the support that was available to them and their role at the event. Prior to the training weekend, an event was run by the clerking / coordinating team with a presentation delivered by Youth Development Worker for Quakers in Britain to which those who were applying to be staff at the 2024 were encouraged to attend. This provided some basic training to those less experienced in how to lead sessions with young people. The theme for the week was “sustainability begins with simplicity” and three community sessions were undertaken on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Monday’s talk was from (Glasgow Meeting), who shared his own experiences of growing up on the Isle of Lewis, the question of needs vs wants and the various uses of horse manure! Tuesday was staff membe (Glasgow Meeting), who explained the concept of a wellbeing economy and talked about her professional role in developing reusable containers and coffee cups, working with large corporations as well as independent businesses. The final talk was from (Glasgow Meeting), who talked about decluttering and ‘stuff’, a practical workshop where young people brought along an item important to them. Feedback on all sessions was very good and the level of engagement from the young people was excellent (particularly given that for many younger participants, a 45-60 minute talk followed by a discussion group as a particularly ‘adult’ format that they will not have encountered at school). The event continued to consider the spirituality and worship elements of the week, making use of the Arc room (with stained glass and a cathedral ceiling) as the venue for Meeting for Worship and evening Epilogue. The Wednesday trip was very different from previous years, with the young people all attending the Council swimming pool facility on the mainland at Largs in the morning, with those aged 13 and over being allowed to stay on in Largs in the afternoon. But in fact, the vast majority chose Millport all but eight returned to the island in the afternoon for bike rides, beach time and crazy golf, with many enjoying a freedom on the island that they will not have in day-to-day life. And the weather was glorious all week, which added to the success of the event. The event was attended by 18 volunteer staff and 40 young people. This was quite a lot down from previous years, reflecting clashes with other non-quaker events, but also, some had not enjoyed the previous year at Ackworth and with the move had chosen not to return. But those that did attend had a fantastic week and it is hoped that this will increase the numbers who attend in 2025. The Trustees thank the Clerking team for all their effort and dedication to ensure a highly successful event. 3 ## **Notes to the Accounts** 1. From time to time the charity has benefited from legacies, funds from other Trusts or substantial donations from supportive Friends. These account for the reserves of £25,130.36 held in the Ecology Building Society. These reserves are not restricted, but by the agreement of the Trustees they may be drawn upon for the purchase of major equipment to be used for the benefit of the annual summer event, and the interest contributes to bursary support to assist some of the young people to attend the event. 2. The fees for 2024 were £400/£350 (for first/subsequent family members).
