Summary of We work with people of any age living with mild to moderate dementia and those the main worried about memory and day-to-day functioning, as well as their carers/supporters. activities We operate through a model of peer support. Participants engage with us primarily in relation to through Meeting Centre Spaces which we are continuing to develop across Fife. We these objects —aiso run the ‘Good Life for Dementia Course’ for those newly diagnosed and family members. This is co-produced and run by people living well with dementia and their family, for people newly diagnosed with dementia and their family and friends. STAND also delivers 2 monthly groups for family and friends of people living with dementia. Funding is available for respite for their loved ones, to allow unpaid carers to attend these evening peer support groups.
Through talking to groups in the community including schools, churches, employee groups, our trustees and members spread the word about living well with dementia and challenge the myths and stereotypes.
The Meeting Centre Spaces give people in the early to moderate stage of dementia an opportunity to meet locally, make new friends, support each other and take part in new activities. STAND also provides a Meeting Space for people diagnosed with Young Onset Dementia. The charity will examine ways to optimise support for members who are transitioning from the moderate stage of dementia. Information sessions from agencies such as the Fife Carers Centre are also arranged and training through the Fife Peer Network.
Our members are also involved with strategy groups at local and national levels to inform the strategies and make sure the voices of people living with dementia are heard.

During 2023 and 2024 the number of DFMCS expanded to eight across Fife, establishing centres at Cadham in Glenrothes, Dunfermline, Rosyth, and Methilhaven in Levenmouth. There is one monthly group for people who are living with a diagnosis of younger onset dementia but other DFMCS meet weekly. They are open to people who are in the mild to moderate stages of dementia and their families and friends, and around 90 people attend. They provide information and guidance about how to live well with dementia with an emphasis on peer support, and also offer therapeutic activities, often based round creative arts. A notable achievement, following the success of a concert held in Glenrothes in early 2023 to celebrate the creation of an album of songs, co-written by STAND DFMCS’s members and musician Gus Harrower, entitled, “Our Gift to You”, has been the writing of further songs which will go into a second album of songs in 2024-5. DFMCS members formed a choir with children from St Marie’s Primary School to perform at the concert, and inter-generational work continues between the Kennoway DFMCS and the local primary school. While each DFMCS is unique, subject to funding, artists, poets and musicians facilitate projects at them, while STAND facilitators and volunteers provide countless other opportunities for arts, crafts, musical, exercise and other activities. Sometimes simply a chat and refreshments provide a stimulating, reassuring and mood-lifting experience for members. STAND members also engaged with many local and national consultations both online and face to face to help improve the lives of people with dementia, including on the National Dementia Strategy. STAND has also been on learning visits to share best practice with DFMCS in other parts of the country, including the Scottish Dementia Arts Festival in Edinburgh in September 2024, which STAND members helped to plan. STAND members continue to build new links and relationships with dementia activists across the UK and internationally to help improve the lives of people with dementia and ensure their voices are heard. STAND also have had exhibition stalls at events such as the Alzheimer Scotland Annual Conference in September. STAND employed their first staff member, a part-time Administration Worker in December 2022 which has helped significantly with the ongoing work as the charity grows. The charity has recently received some funding for the part-time Administrator role for a further two years, for which we thank the Agnes Hunter Trust. We are grateful to and hugely reliant on the goodwill and commitment of volunteers who are STAND members and supporters. STAND is extremely grateful to Ruth McCabe, who left STAND in December 2024 after many years of tireless commitment to the organisation.

In 2025 the development began of a new Dementia Friendly Meeting Centre Space in Cupar. This is funded by the Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing fund through Fife Voluntary Action. This new meeting space was brought together by the six-week course, A Good Life with Dementia, where new members who are living with dementia and caregivers come together to learn, share experiences and form the new group.
STAND continues in all its Dementia Friendly Meeting Centre Spaces to support and deliver meaningful arts and music projects, songwriting, playwriting and horticulture.
At the STAND AGM in November 2024 six Trustees were elected and Office Bearers agreed. A new treasurer was sought asa priority Further funding bids are ongoing to provide creative and recreational resources for the existing DFMCS’s and for additional facilitators, so that each Meeting Space has two Facilitators in place.
