The Moray Coast Methodist Church
Trustees’ Annual Report (continueg) Year Ended to 31 August 2025
Structure, governance and management
The Methodist Church came about as a result of the work of a dedicated group of evangelical Christians in the 18 Century, including John and Charles Wesley. It is established by parliament in accordance with the Methodist Church Act, 1976. The Doctrine of The Methodist Church claims and cherishes its place in the Holy Catholic Church which is the Body of Christ. It rejoices in the inheritance of the apostolic faith and loyally accepts the fundamental principles of the historic creeds and of the Protestant Reformation. It ever remembers that in the providence of God Methodism was raised up to spread scriptural holiness through the land by the proclamation of the evangelical faith and declares its unfaltering resolve to be true to its divinely appointed mission. The doctrines of the evangelical faith which Methodism has held from the beginning and still holds are based upon the divine revelation recorded in the Holy Scriptures. The Methodist Church acknowledges this revelation as the supreme rule of faith and practice. These evangelical doctrines to which the preachers of the Methodist Church are pledged are contained in Wesley's Notes on the New Testament and the first four volumes of his sermons.
The Notes on the New Testament and the 44 Sermons are not intended to impose a system of formal or speculative theology on Methodist preachers, but to set up standards of preaching and belief which should secure loyalty to the fundamental truths of the gospel of redemption and ensure the continued witness of the Church to the realities of the Christian experience of salvation.
Objectives and activities
This charity was established to replace the former separate charities: Buckie Methodist Church SC018440, Portessie Methodist Church SC037952, Findochty Methodist Church SC021942 and Cullen Methodist Church SC038079. Those four former charities have now wound up and passed their assets and liabilities to The Moray Coast Methodist Church SC051211 which is a SCIO.
In summer of 2021, the four churches voted and in agreement the Methodist Church of Great Britian became one. The Moray Coast Methodist Church (MCMC). The inaugural Annual Meeting of the new church was held during the joint church’s morning service on Sunday 6'" June 2021, at Portessie, the Reverend Chris Jackson presiding. Trustees and the Church Council were appointed for the new Church (MCMC). Trustees are appointed at the Annual General meeting of MCMC.
Achievements and performance
The Moray Coast Methodist Church holds regular Sunday Worship in either the Buckie or Portessie churches; the Guild meets regularly on alternate Tuesday's at Portessie; Tea and Scripture — a lectionary-based bible study — is held on Thursday afternoons and Sunday evenings.
The Portessie Church has a Sunday School (held concurrently with Sunday morning worship) that attracts between 8 and 12 children (under 16 years old) during term times.
The Church premises at Buckie have been until February 2024 in regular use by a number of outside organisations. In February 2025 — April 2025 a private individual used the church hall for dance practice.
The church planned a community-based project called Moray Hope for Peace, with support from a £12,000 grant from TSI Moray in March 2023, with the intention of using the church building facilities at Cullen. However this project has been rescheduled to use the facilities at Portessie Church. A six month pilot project ‘Step by Step’ began on Tuesday 24" September 2024 with Step by Step in Moray working with mothers and babies up to the age of three years of age, this has continued in this financial year. A further grant of £10,000 was received to support the project in March 2025. The Moray Coast Methodist Church received £2,206.31 from the initial grant and £4,600 from the second grant in rent for use of the premises. Step by Step has received £12,400 in this financial year from the grant money received by Moray Coast Methodist Church.

Achievements and performance (continued)
In February 2024 Beulah Community Café was established to run fortnightly in the Buckie Church hall with all proceeds going to MCMC, this continues in this financial year.
Financial review
The income and expenditure for The Moray Coast Methodist Church in its fourth year to 31% August 2025 has shown a surplus of £17,052 income over expenditure for the year. There has been an agerelated decline in membership numbers due to members passing away, however members are committed to generous giving and have generously supported two coffee mornings raising £2,762 for Portessie building repairs and the new Community Café at Buckie alternate Tuesday afternoons for fellowship and friendship which has raised £823.
The main income is from church collections which is down by £3,285 however Gift Aid donations have increased by £192.
Donations from funerals along with a generous Gift Aided £1,000 donation and the return of the cost of three valuations totalling £5,400 on MCMC properties and the remainder of grant monies from the Step by Step project for the use of Portessie premises has significantly increased the income for 2024-2025.
The Church Council made some hard decisions during the previous financial year mainly to sell the Buckie Methodist Church and the Cullen Methodist Church and these are still currently for sale to ensure the longer-term financial viability of the MCMC and the North of Scotland Mission Circuit (NOSMC). It is intended that the sale of both premises will be handled by the Trustees for Methodist Church Purposes (TMCP), as the proceeds of the sales do not come to the Moray Coast Methodist Church.
From September 2024 the NOSMC ministerial services will comprise of a Deacon, Presbyter and a part time Superintendent Minister. The main expenditure of MCMC is the Assessment which for Connexional year 2024-2025 has been reduced to three payments of £6,161.
On 1 September 2025 the six Methodist Circuits in Scotland became on Circuit in Scotland and the North of Scotland Mission Circuit (NOSMC) ceased to exist on 31 August 2025. The new Circuit raised the Assessment for MCMC for 2025-2026 by 3.5% to five payments of £7,394.
The Methodist insurance for the three churches has seen a marked decrease due to the sale of the Buckie and Cullen churches. Other significant expenditure is the payment of the organist at Buckie and the cleaning of Portessie and Buckie churches which has reduced slightly this year totalling £3,503. The trustees’ annual report was approved on 26/4 [2025,,, signed on behalf of the board of trustees by:
