Chair’s Report 29 October 2025

The last Chair’s report was prepared on 30 March 2025. In the event of the resignation of founding member and Treasurer for health reasons on 31 October 2025 an updated annual report for October 2024- October 2025 is given here.

JLB TV 100 events launched on 20 September 2025 with our website https://jlbtv100.org/ going live and a small exhibition. The exhibition was hosted by Helensburgh Parish Church as part of Doors Open Day and highlighted the Baird stained glass windows designed by fs and included information panels on the life and inventions of JLB and the display of two quilts created by Helensburgh Sew Easy crafting group. One quilt depicts an image of JLB with a test card background and the othera selection of his inventions. A new JLB walking trail around Helensburgh prepared by

of Destination Helensburgh was launched in paper and digital format. Stickers featuring the JLB TV 100 logo and colouring sheets were prepared for children attending the event and a postcard featuring the logo and our website, social media and contact details was distributed to visitors and has been placed at several outlets around the town.

Helensburgh Parish Church held a service of thanksgiving for the life of JLB on 5 October. GEave a talk on the Life of John Logie Baird for Helensburgh Heritage Trust on 24 September at which the quilts were also on display and the walking trail leaflet, postcards and souvenirs of JLB including postcards, keyrings and coasters donated by Destination Helensburgh were handed out. Both events were attended by JLB’s grand-daughter and niece.

On 2 October, 100 years to the day since JLB transmitted an image of Stookie Bill, ME BM save an interview to the STV 6 o’clock news for an item on JLB. Stopgap Cinema gave its first showing of the film “The Man Who Saw the Future’ to mark the occasion. Motions marking the first successful transmission of television were read in the Scottish Parliament(i and at WestminsterFO The next major event in the JLB TV 100 programme is the annual Helensburgh pantomime ‘Dorothy’s Big Adventure’, which is themed on JLB, on 4 — 6 December.

Other events for 2026 are in development / underway and include a TV themed quiz, JLB / TV themed knitted post box toppers (Grey Matters Active Ageing), a talk for Helensburgh Chest, Heart and Stroke Club; a JLB Cocktail competition (Riverhill bistro); a Scrapheap Challenge event (M&T Builders Merchants, The Repair Hub and Friends of Hermitage Park); a short series of lecture on My Life in TV (various speakers); a light projection event (Gill Davies); Reading Minds book festival (Helensburgh Community Hub); photography walks on the JLB Trail (Jeans’s Bothy (Enable); a sandwich board parade to mark National Inventors Day 2026 and an exhibition on JLB and television artefacts. The finale event in April 2026 will be a festival day in Colquhoun Square featuring a musical programme overseen byiith contributions from Helensburgh Community Orchestra, the Dorian Choir, the Peninsula Choir and other local musical groups, which will include a mini Last Night of the Proms.

Subject to a successful funding application a large creative arts project involving many sectors of the community of all ages and abilities will be the finale of the celebrations with an illuminated puppet and lantern parade.

Whilst the JLB TV100 organising committee numbers only six people various community groups and businesses are participating in the overall celebration. The premise of the organising committee is for local groups to undertake their usual activities but take JLB and one hundred years of television as a theme.

It is hoped that funding applications will be successful in order to support the various community activities that are planned and in development.
