For persons who have need of them by reason of their age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage. - The advancement of citizenship and community development, including the advancement of urban and rural regeneration and the promotion of civic responsibility and volunteering, the voluntary sector or the effectiveness or efficiency of charities Include a summary of the charity’s main activities in relation to the purposes – that is, what the charity does to achieve its purposes. ## **Structure, governance and management** The Granite City SCIO is governed by a Constitution the main purposes of which are listed below 1 The name of the organisation is “Granite City Taekwondo” (“the Organisation”). 2 The Organisation will, upon registration, be a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). REGISTERED OFFICE 3 The principal office of the organisation will be in Scotland (and must remain in Scotland). DEFINITION OF COMMUNITY AND PURPOSES - 4 The Organisation has been formed to benefit the community of Aberdeen which comprises the Aberdeen City local government boundary ("the Community") with the following purposes (the “Purposes”): - 4.1 The advancement of public participation in sport which involves physical skill and exertion. - 4.2 The provision of recreational facilities and the organisation of recreational activities, with the primary object of improving the conditions of life for the persons for whom the facilities or activities are primarily intended. For persons who have need of them by reason of their age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage. - 4.3 The advancement of citizenship and community development, including the advancement of urban and rural regeneration and the promotion of civic responsibility and volunteering, the voluntary sector or the effectiveness or efficiency of charities. ## POWERS - 5 The SCIO has power to do anything which is calculated to further its purposes or is conducive or incidental to doing so. In particular, (but without limiting the range of powers available under the 2005 Act), the SCIO has power: - 5.1 to encourage and develop a spirit of voluntary or other commitment by, or co operation with, individuals, unincorporated associations, societies, federations, partnerships, corporate bodies, agencies, undertakings, local authorities, unions, co operatives, trusts and others and any groups or groupings thereof willing to assist the Organisation to achieve the Purposes; - 5.2 to promote and carry out research, surveys and investigations and to promote, develop and manage initiatives, projects and programmes; - 5.3 to provide advice, consultancy, training, tuition, expertise and assistance; - 5.4 to prepare, organise, promote and implement training courses, exhibitions, lectures, seminars, conferences, events and workshops, to collect, collate, disseminate and exchange information and to prepare, produce, edit, publish, exhibit and distribute clauses, pamphlets, books and other publications, tapes, motion and still pictures, music and drama and other materials, all in any medium; - 5.5 to purchase, take on lease, hire, or otherwise acquire any property suitable for the organisation; - 5.6 to construct, convert, improve, develop, conserve, maintain, alter and demolish any buildings or erections whether of a permanent or temporary nature, and manage and operate (or arrange for the professional or other appropriate management and operation of) the organisation's property; - 5.7 to sell, let, hire, licence, give in exchange and otherwise dispose of all or any part of the property of the organisation; - 5.8 to establish and administer a building fund or funds or guarantee fund or funds or endowment fund or funds; - 5.9 to employ, contract with, train and pay such staff (whether employed or self employed) as are considered appropriate for the proper conduct of the activities of the organisation; - 5.10 to take such steps as may be deemed appropriate for the purpose of raising funds for the activities of the organisation; - 5.11 to accept subscriptions, grants, donations, gifts, legacies and endowments of all kinds, either absolutely, conditionally or in trust; - 5.12 to borrow or raise money for the Purposes and to give security in support of any such borrowings by the organisation and/or in support of any obligations undertaken by the organisation; - 5.13 to set aside funds not immediately required as a reserve or for specific purposes; - 5.14 to invest any funds which are not immediately required for the activities of the organisation in such investments as may be considered appropriate, which may be held in the name of a nominee organisation under the instructions of the Board of Trustees, and to dispose of, and vary, such investments; - 5.15 to make grants or loans of money and to give guarantees; - 5.16 to establish, manage and/or support any other charity, and to make donations for any charitable purpose falling within the purposes; - 5.17 to establish, operate and administer and/or otherwise acquire any separate trading organisation or association, whether charitable or not; - 5.18 to enter into any arrangement with any organisation, government or authority which may be advantageous for the purposes of the activities of the organisation and to enter into any arrangement for cooperation, mutual assistance, or sharing profit with any charitable organisation; - 5.19 to enter into contracts to provide services to or on behalf of others; - 5.20 to effect insurance of all kinds (which may include indemnity insurance in respect of Trustees and employees); - 5.21 to oppose, or object to, any application or proceedings which may prejudice the interests of the organisation; - 5.22 to pay the costs of forming the organisation and its subsequent development; - 5.23 to carry out the Purposes as principal, agent, contractor, trustee or in any other capacity. Achievements and performance (Club) This year our charity has worked and developed so hard to expand on our existing successes and make new successes also. In January 2023 our chief Instructor and a coach became qualified Poomsae {patterns} judges. Our chief Instructor was a refresher/update and our coach was a new qualification. These qualifications will help with staff ing/judging the competitions hosted in Scotland throughout the year and onwards. In February our club attended the Lanarkshire Open Championships. The Poomsae {patterns> competition we had 20 competitors and we returned with 13 Gold medals, 6 Silver Medals and 6 Bronze medals, plus we won 3rd place team trophy. The Kyorugi (sparring) competition we had 8 fighters, returning with l Gold, 6 March 2023 we had 8 club members selected for the Scottish National Poomsae Team as a region under British Taekwondo Great British Team. May 2023 we hosted an Interclub fundraising competition which went successfully and we raised a fantastic £1174.31. Between entry fees, raffles and the cafe with cakes, fresh bakes and snacks, this was a successful day. In May our chief Instructor started our fully funded from NHS Health Improvement fund, our Ladies self defence class which was run for 6 months for free. Our Children's classes increased from twice a week to three times a week. Our adults class and senior grade children’s classes remained at twice a week. June 2023 a number of students and coaches attended the Scottish National Championships. Our Poomsae (patterns) competitors returned with a total of 12 Gold trophies (National Champions) 8 Silver medals and 12 Bronze medals. Our Kyorugi (fighting) players have returned with 4 Gold trophies (National Champions), 7 Silver Medals and 3 bronze medals. A total of 16 Gold trophies (National Champions), 15 Silver Medals and 15 Bronze medals, a grand total of 46 trophies/medals and to top this off, we earned 2nd place team trophy for Poomsae {patterns} also. htt www. ressand'ournal.co.uk ort other 5814115 ranite-cit -taekwo UXesZsnE6emsLCZ-XtJ9fDOD6 RL 4sDXeNhY4 Also in June 2023 we had a further 3 club members selected for the Scottish National Poomsae Team as a region, under British Taekwondo Great British Team. A total of 11 from our club were selected this year. In July 2023 we had a fundraising car wash at our centre. This successful event raised £550.53. September 2023 students and coaches from our club attended the Scottish Open Poomsae (patterns) competition down in Wishaw. 23 competitors, 7 Gold medals, 9 Silver medals and 9 bronze medals have returned to Aberdeen with us, and to top this off, we won 3rd Place Team Trophy. (Student collecting team trophy). In September 2023 Granite City Taekwondo signed up for the Northsound 1 Cash for Kids Fundraiser. Clubs/charities around Aberdeen could sign up for this challenge. This started on the 16th of September for 1 month. The club/group who makes the most money will win an additional £5000, plus they will match what the winner makes. Second prize is £2500, plus match funding, 3rd prize is £1500 plus match funding. There is also £500 for most creative funding ideas, and £500 for best use of Social media. We were fundraising for creating free taekwondo classes for people with ASN (Additional Support Needs) and disabilities. Our style of Taekwondo - World Taekwondo, which is an Olympic Sport, recognizes the need and it supports participation of additional support needs. The participation of people with disabilities has increased dramatically in Taekwondo and other sports, and World Taekwondo have recognized and devised a division for competitions specific to people with disabilities or additional support needs called ParaTaekwondo. Our aim is to encourage growth in Taekwondo with participation of disabled people (inclusion). The plan is to increase the awareness of para-taekwondo, as well as coach support for instructors, like myself, who currently have disabled athletes (one student of ours is in the Great British Taekwondo squad, and he resides in Tillydrone). Granite City taekwondo wishes to open their doors to all. World Taekwondo has categorised Taekwondo Para- into two Taekwondo disciplines, Kyorugi (sparring) and Poomsae (patterns). - P10 – Visual impairment - P20 – Intellectual disability - P30 – Physical impairments - K40 – Upper limb deficiency - P50 – Wheelchair class - KP60 – Deaf & hearing impaired - K70 – Short stature Our Taekwondo school is for inclusion for all. We were fundraising through Northsound Cash for Kids to raise money so we are able to facilitate FREE Taekwondo classes to ASN (Additional Support Needs) and people with disabilities to be included in our sport. Our fundraising initiatives over the 4 weeks were; cash wash, community BBQ, community primary school disco, community invite yoga classes, community family movie night/PJ party, community invite friskis exercise classes, smarties tube challenge, community invite sound bath meditation/relaxation session. gardening project fundraiser, community invite zumba class. Now that the Sport's Challenge has finished and the money counted we are delighted to tell you that your club raised an incredible £7,470.67 This means that you have won 2nd Place and an additional £2,500.00. You have also won the £500.00 Creativity Award - meaning the total your club will be awarded back is a whopping £70,470.67 Our sound bath fundraiser money was not added into the cash for kids just giving account in time for the closing date, but the amount has been added to our total. October 2023 students and coach/lnstructor made their way down to Worcester for the British National Championships. A fantastic opportunity for more experience and exposure to the competition environment for our athletes including our Para Athlete from our club who is in the GB team. Tesco stronger start - In Store blue tokens application was successful and our project was put forward to a customer vote in 3 Tesco local stores. Vote In-store until 14th January 2024 November 2023 - Our Chief Instructor organised a Taekwondo Scotland Black Belt grading. There hasn't been a black belt grading in Scotland available for our club since 2019 due to covid 19. Our Chief Instructor was one of the examination panel members. 100% pass rate for Granite City Taekwondo at our Taekwondo Scotland National Dan Promotion Test grading. 8 newly appointed black belts and Degree Promotion to 4th Dan for another student. December 2023 - Christmas Fayre fundraiser. Our first Christmas Fayre. Another successful fundraiser. We had a Santa’s grotto, external businesses with table hire, Christmas crafts and our cafe. ## **Achievements and performance (Centre)** Through 2023 our centre has had some additional sublets which has helped us to increase our centre’s income. There has been quite a variety, which has been great. Examples are; Indoor football for over the winter period at the beginning of 2023 and again at the end of 2023. Health Improvement Fund - Generation fitness classes from January to July. A Dog Show group started in May for a one hour hire. This hire continues. UDecide Fund - project with our last school which is in Tillydrone beside our centre started in May for 8 weeks - Free Taekwondo to children living in areas of deprivation. The project was carried out at our centre and the school children attended here. The project money could then pay our hall hire and put money into our centre. Health Improvement Fund - Ladies self defence classes started in May Also and run until December as we stopped the class during the holidays. 6 Months of classes were facilitated for free for ladies and the hall hire went into our centre. British Sign Language - In September a tutor ran a 10 week programme/course. Sound bath meditation - some occasional bookings for relaxation sessions. We had some once off bookings for the creativity heritage and science group doing a community event, birthday parties, food fest community event, and Hong Kong event, tasting Chinese food. Our club booked additional hires throughout the year to facilitate extra classes to our normal, plus for gradings, Interclub competition, match days, fundraisers etc. This is an increase from last year (2022), and we hope that the increase continues for our next financial year. In August 2023 we were informed of our success of securing £15,000 from Foundation Scotland, Vattenfall Fund. This funding is to upgrade Tillydrone Community Centre with improvements to insulation, heating and lighting to reduce carbon, save money and create a better facility for users. This funding is match funding, which we have applied to other applications and awaiting results. Application to Just Transition Fund was successful up until the point of requiring estimates from companies. Unfortunately, companies did not respond in a time frame for our application to proceed to the public vote. This was very disheartening indeed. ## **Financial review** The financial statements for the year January 2023 – December 2023 as set out below have been prepared and audited in compliance with OSCR regulations. ## **Future plans** Next year “2024” we plan to see the growth of sport and sport participation within the community and the use of our centre. As a group, we plan to try and organise and facilitate additional Taekwondo lessons for all members, as well as working towards our goal of ASN specific classes, hoping that the funding we have behind us can support the ASN (Additional Support Needs) class to be launched. The group will continue to fundraise to support our athletes, some of which will help towards financing the attendance of the competition environment. We have one athlete in the GB para poomsae (patterns) squad and 11 members in the Scottish National Squad which is within the GB squad, and trains nationally. We would love for an increase in athletes to be selected for the GB squad as well as an increase in competitions to attend and seminars to participate in to greater our standard that we already have. We will reach out for additional funding/match funding to help us upgrade and modernise our building. The audit from Business Energy Scotland advice is to insulate, change the lighting to LED, and to change/modernise our heating system. More funding applications will be submitted to support us with this project. We hope to support another project that we mentioned in our community asset transfer application, which is supporting people rehabilitating from drugs and alcohol abuse. We would like to apply for funding and be able to support these people to continue to reach positive destinations in their life by having support groups at our centre and activities that they can take part in or be part of. Our community centre project we hope will continue to grow and support the local community bringing together our diverse cultural groups through local events and groups using our space through subletting our building.
