FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2025
The Irustees present their annual report and financial stalements for the year ended 31 March 2025.
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies sel out in note 1 to the
financial st8tements and comply wilh Ihe association's conslilution, the Charities and Trustee Investment
{Scolland) Act 2005. the Charities Accounls (Scolland} Regulations 2006 (as amended) and 'Acoounting and
Reporting by Charities- Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their a(￿OuntS in
accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republi¢ of Ireland (FRS
102)" (effedive 1 January 20191.
Objectives and acllvities
The object of the Association is lo support organisalions devoted to the care and welfare of children and young
people. This Is achieved by awarding grants to such organisatioris for specilic projects or purpose5. There are
no changes lo this objective during the year and there is none planned for the future.
Review of activities
The Truslees have continued to cary out their duties in accordance wtlh the Conslilution. There continues lo be
a hwJh level of applications for grants and successful applicants are listed on pages 12-15 of the accounts. Each
application for grant is sympalhelically and Carefully considered and the Trustees mainlain, so far as possible, an
active inleresl in projects supported.
The Association has incurred nel expendilure before gains on investments of £109,973 (2024 - £91,444).
Charitable expenditure in Ihe year lotalled £139,707 (2024 - £137,804).
During the year the Association continued to incur costs in re12tion to the legal claims. as well as a number of
personal data access requesls. As a result, the Association has incurred a(Iditional professional fees of £35.989
(2024 - £26,608) duiing the year.
Grant making policy
In accordance with the objectives of the Association grants are made lo organisations devoted to Ihe care and
welfare of children and young people.
A slarbdard application form is used lo provide Ihe information required for Truslees to decide which organisalions
should receive granls.
The major grant giving round is considered at the meeting of the Trustees annually, Ihe subsidiary granl giving
rounds are proposed by the Chair and considered by the Truslees using eledronic means.
Achievements and perfomiance
The association conlinues lo provide grants to organisations supporting children and young people.
Flnancial review
During th& year investmenl and other income amounted lo £44,260 (2024 - £59,713).
Grants of £86.782 (2024 £93.790} were paid out which, when added to other expenses, resulted in a nel
decrease in funds, after gain on investments, of £39,97412024 - nel increase of £19,395). This movement being
due lo £69.999 of net gain on invèstments (2024 . £110,839 of nei gain on inveslments) and £109,973 (2024
£91,444) nel expenditure in operations.
The investments had a market value at 31 March 2025 of £1,923,975 {2024 - £1,959,627).

Reserves policy
Grants afe paid out of inveslment and other income after dedudion of adminislralive expenses.
Revenue surpluses brought forward from previous years are available if there is a shortFall.
There is no reslriclion on the use of capital funds for revenue purposes and transfers are made from lime to time
according to the demand for granls.
£1,941,749 reseNes were held at 31 March 2025 (2024 - £1,981,723) all of which is unrestricted. The
unrestricted funds comprise income snd surplusesldeficits retained over Ihe Associalion's history. and al 31
Marth 2025 É1.923,97512024- £1,959,627) was invested in oidei lo generale future income.
£1.892,884 held in inveslments can only be realised by disposing of holdings in the portfolio. Cash in the
portfolio of £31,091 can be ulilised should the Associalion require immediate funds.
Investment polley
The Trustees employ Rossie House Investment Management as investment managers of the portfolio on a
discretionary basis. The investment objective is one of a balanced portfolio subject to a medium degree of risk.
There are no specific investment reslriclions or limilalions applied to the portfolio. The porttoliD is looked al on
total retums basis measured against surtable benchmarks. The Fund Managers meet with Ihe Truslees al least
OTr￿ a year. The performance of the portfolio duriThJ the year refleds prevailing markel ￿nditions.
A target of £40,000 inttsme {being 2f¢)und 20/0), and to release £90,000 of capital (being around S•/0) was sel lor
the year ended 31 March 2025, againsl which inveslment incorne of £42.15412024 - £39.453) and capital of
£95.000 (2024 - £105,000) was received. Should the market value of the fund drop to £1.65m (to be rèviewed
annually) the Gapital withdrawal would be suspended until Ihere was a r6COVary.
Risk management policy
The board regularly assesses and considers Ihe rnajor risks to which the ch8rily is exposed in particular those
relaling to operations and financing of the Asso¢ialion. The principal risk is loss of captial due to market risk on
the investmenl portfolio. This is mitigated by appropriate systems and controb and the engagement of
experienced inveslmenl managers. The Association anlicipales a long-term future and accepts the reality that
financial markets arè such that capital values of investments will fluctuate during a long time-scale.
The value of the investment portfolio has been maintained al a similar level to 2024. and the Association has
releasÈd cash from the investment portfolio as planned in order to meel its liabilities. The Gash balance will be
regularly monitored to ensure future financial obligations can be mel. Grants will continue to be awarded, only lo
the exlenl that the Association's cash and fund balances allow.
Plans for the future
The Association will Gonlinue lo provide granls as far as possible to organisations thal meet the requirements of
the Association.
structure, governance and management
Constitution
Dr Gulhrie's Schools, Association was founded in 1847 by the Rev Dr Thomas Gulhrie and for over a century ran
schools for children in need. Following a change in government policy the schoo15 were closed and ihe
Association reconstituted as an unincorporated association on 26 June 1987. The assets of Ihe original
Association were then transferred to this Association. conslitut&d as a SCIO and approved as a charity on 8 July
2021.

the charity information pa9e.

AppolntmenL induction and training of Trusts9¥
The Association is managed by Trustees who are empowered lo assume new Trustees provided they are
members of the Association.
At present, five of the Truslees are descendants of Dr Guthrie and are considered to have a reasonable Skills set
for the Board. Olher Trustees are recruited to complement their skills as required. Vacancies do not occur very
often but when necessary the Trustees approach a person who they feel has the necessary knowledge and skills
and who will make a valuable contribution to the management of Ihe Association. Trustees are eli9ible to se￿e
for one term of five years, and following a break of one year, are eligibile to serve for one further term of five
years.
New Trustees are provided with a copy of the constitution and annual financial stalernents and are briefed as to
their dulles by Ihe Chairman and Secretary. From time to time Trustees are updated on their duties and
responsibililies.
Dèclsion making proc•ss
The Grants Administrator is responsible for receiving applications, presenting them to the Trustees and informing
applicanls of the decision as lo whelher a grant has been approved. As the Trustees live in differa)t parts of the
UK there is only one meeting 8 year although decisions on grant applications are made several times a year
using electronic means.
The Ch2r6ty Administralors are responsible for the administration ol Ihe Association.
Ststsment of trustees. responsibilities
The trusl&es are responsible for preparing the Twslees, Report and the financial statements in ac£ordance with
applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting
Practice).
The law applicable lo Gharilies in Scotland requires the Iru$lee8 to prepare financial statements for each financial
year which give a true and fair view of Ihe state of affairs of the associalion and of the incoming resources and
application of resources of the association for that year.
In preparing Ihese financial statements, the trustees are required lo:
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistenty.
observe the methods and principles in the Charrties SORP;
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent:
stale whether applicable accounting slandards have been followed, subject to any malerial departures
disttlosed and explained in the financial statements., and
prepare the financial slalements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to pre$Ur￿ that the
charity will continue in operalion.
The truslees are responsible for keeping sufficient accounling records Ihat disclose with reasonable aGGuraGy at
any lime the finanGial posilion of the a550ciation and enable them to ensure thal the financial statements comply
wtlh the Charities and Truslee Investment (Scotlandl Act 2005, the Charities Accounts (Scoland) Regulations
2006 las amended) and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the as5els of
the association and hence for taking reasonable steps for Ihe prevention and detection of fraud and other
irregularilies.

I report on the financial statements of the asSo￿ation for the year ended 31 March 2025. which are set out on
pages S to 18.
Respective responsiblllties of trustees and èxaminer
The association's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the financial ststements in accordance with Ihe
terms of the Charities and Truslee Inveslments (Scotland) AGI 2005 and the Charities Account8 (Scolland)
Regulabons 2006 (as amended). The charity's truslees consider Ihal the audit requirement of Regulation 10(11{a)
lo (cl of the 2006 Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility lo examine the financial slalemenls
as required under section 44{1}Ic} of the Act and lo state whelher particular matters have come to my attentic￿.
Basis of Independènl examirn•rfs statement
My examination is Ca￿led oijl in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations. An
examination includes a review of Ihe acGQUllting records kepi by the charity and a Gomparison of the financial
stalements presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual ilems or disdosures in the
financial statements, and seeks explanations frorn the trustees conceming any such matters. The procedures
undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently I do not express
an audit opinion on the view gNen by the financial statements.

Charity informatlon
Dr Gulhrie's Association SCIO is constituted as a SCIO and continues the activilies ol a fornier
unincorporated tharity which was formed in 1987 following Ihe closure of Dr GUthr￿'S Schools.
The Association's principal address is Quay 2, 139 Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, EH3 9QG
1.1 Aeeounting ¢oDvention
The financial slalements have been prepared in accordance wilh the Association's Constituition, the Charities
and Trustee Inveslrnenl (Scolland) Act 2005, the Charitiès Accounts {S¢olland) Regulations 2006 (as
amended), FRS 102 the Financial Reporting Standard appliGable applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland
f'FRS 102") and 'AcGounting and Reporting by Charities.. Slalemenl of Recomrnended Pract￿ applicabk lo
charities preparing iheir accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable In the UK
and Republic of Ireland {FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019). The Association is a Public Benefil Entity as
defined by FRS 102.
The Association has taken adwanlage of the provisions in the SORP for smaller chantiès not to prepare a
Statement of Cash Flow5.
The financial slalemenls are prepared in sterling. which is the functional currency of the association.
Monetary amounts in Ihese financial slatery*nls are rounded lo the nearest £.
1.2 Going concern
The Trustees have identified no issues Ihal may impact on the Association's ability to continue as a going
Concern. The financAal slalemenls have Iherfore been prepared on going concern basis.
1.3 Charitable fund$
UnTestricted funds ale available for use at the discretv)n of the truslees. In order lo ensure that funds are
available for specific projects, Gertain funds are set aside and designated by the trustees inlo separale funds.
The Assouabon has unrestricted revenue and capital funds. The unrestricted revenue fund comprises
surpluses and deficits bioughl foNiard over many decades. They may be used for all constilulional purposes.
The unreslricted capital funds can be used for the charitable objects at Ihe discretion of thé Iruslees.
Restricted funds are those whiGh have been given to the charity for use in accordance with the wishes of
donors, commonly for use in relation to a specAfic service. The charity has no restricted funds.
1.4 Incorne
Income is recognised when the charity becomes enlitled lo the income, receipt is probable and the amount
can be reliably measured.
Investment income interest is recognised using the effective irnlerest rate applicable to the assèt. Royalties
are recognised on an accruals basis. Dividend incorne is recognised when the right to receipt is established
and is measured al the fair value.
Cash donations are recognised on receipl.

1.5 Expenditure
Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis and related where practicable lo Ihe ¢harity'S aclivities.
Where possible. expenditure is allocated directly lo the function to which it relates. Where this is noi possible
il is allocated on the basis of lime spent by staff on that activity.
Costs of raising funds comprises those costs which are associaied with the generation of income
frorn sources other than undertaking charitable adivities. and irKludes investment management
Gosls.
Charilable expendilure comprises those costs incurred by the Gharily in the delivery of its charitable
aclivilies and seNi¢es.
Support costs and governan￿ costs are apportioned between aclivities on the basis of time spent by
stafl on that aclivlty.
Accruals are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired, and meet granl commilmenls
established beforè the year end. Accruals are iecognised al the undisGounled amount owed lo the supplier,
which is normally Ihe invoice price, or grants as awarded by the Trustees.
1.6 Tangible fixed assets
Tangible fixed assets are initially measured at cost and subsequenlly measured al cost or valuation, net of
depreciation and any impairment losses.
Depreciation is recognised so as lo write off the cost or valuation of assets less their residual values over their
useful lives on the following bases..

The gain or loss arising on the disposal of an asset is determined as the difference be￿een the sale
proceeds and the Garrying value of Ihe assel. and is recognised in the slatemenl of financial activities.
1.7 Fixed asset investments
Quoted investments are stated at Ihelr fair value at Ihe reporting date. Gains and 105ses arising are
recognised in the stalemenl of financial activities in Ihe period in which they arise.
Unlisled investments are stated al their fair value at the reporting date.
The principal risk lo the AssoGialion is loss of capital due to market risk on the inveslmenl portfolio. This is
miligated by appropriate systems and controls and the engagement of an experienced firm of inveslmerl
a(fvisors. The Associalion anticipates a long-temi future and accepts the reality that financial rnarkets ore
such that capital values of investmenls will flucluale during a long time-scale.
1.8 Impaimient of fixed assets
At each reporting end dale, the asso¢ialion reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible assels lo determine
whelher ihere is any indiGalion thal Ihose asset5 have suffered an impaimienl k)ss. If any such ind￿allOn
exists, the recoverable amount of the asset is eslimated in order lo determine the extent of the impairment
loss (rf any).
1.9 Cash and cash equivalents
Cash and cash equivalenls include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term liquid
investments with original maturilies ol three months or less, and bank overdrafls. Bank overdrafls are shown
within borrowings in current liabilities.

1.10 Financial Instruments
Financial instruments are recognised in the statement of financial position when the charity becomes a party
to the contractual provisions of the inslrumenl. Financial inslruments are initially measured al transaction
pnce. Subsequent to initial recognition, they are accounted for as set out below. A financing I[￿saCtIon is
measured at Ihe present value of the future payments discounted at markel rate of interest for similar debt
instrument.
Financial inslTumenls are classified as either'basic, or'othef in accordance with Chapter 11 of FRS 102.
At Ihe end of each reporting period, debt insliuments classtfied as basic are measured at amortised cost
using the effective intèrest method. All financial inslwments not classified as basiG are measured at fair value
at the end of the reporling period with the resulting charges recognised in income or expense. Where the fair
value cannot be reliably measuTed. they are recognised at cost less impairm8nL
Financial assels are derecognised when the contractual righls to ihe cash flows from the assel expire, or
when Ihe Charity has transferred substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership. FinanLial liabilities are
dèrècognised only once the liability ha£ been extinguished through discharge. cancellation or expiry.
Basic financlal assets
Basic financial assels, which include debtors and cash and bank balances, are inili?Ily measured a
transaclion price includlng transaclion costs and are subsequenlly carr￿d at amort15ed cost using the
effective inlerest method unless the arrangement con3trtutes a financing transadion, where the transaction is
measured al the present value of the fvlure receipts discounled at a market rate of inleresl. Financial assets
classified as receivable within one year are nol amortised.
Baslc financial liabillties
Basic financial liabilities, including creditors and bank loans are initially recognised al transaction price unless
the arrangement Conslitules a financing transaclion. where the debt instrument is measured al the present
value of the fulure payments discounted al a market rate of interest. Financial liabilities dassthed as payable
within one year are not amortised.
Debt instruments are subsequently carried al amortised cosl, using the effective interest rate method.
Trade creditors are obligations lo pay for goods or seNices that have been acquired in the ordinary course of
operations from suppliers. Arnounts payable are classified as current liabilities if paymenl is due within one
year or less. If not, Ihey are presented as non-current liabilities. Trade credilors ale rewgnised initially at
transaction pnce and subsequently measured al arnortised cost using the effeclive interest method.
crftical accounting estimates and judgements
In the application of the association's accounting policies, the trustees are required to make judgements.
estimates and assumptions about the carrying amount of assets and liabililies that are not readily apparent
from other sources. The estimates and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and oiher
factors Ihal are considered lo be relev8nt. Adual results may differ from these eslimales.
The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting
estimates are recognised in the pefiod in which the estimate is revised where the revision affects ￿)lY that
period, or in the period of the remsion and future periods where the revision affects bolh current and future
periods.
The trustees are not aware of any critical accounling estimates and judgements that would have a material
impact on the financial slatemenls other Ihan Ihose points mentioned in note 19.

likelihood of the requirement to pay selllements or the sums that could be payable due to the eady stage of
these legal actions.
