Our activities in the year to April 2025
Following our successful funding bid to The National Lottery Community Fund Awards for All scheme we have been working to deliver our Building Bridges project. Its purpose had been to help us build bridges across the communities and deliver three major events: The Cost-ofLiving Crisis, Housing and Access to Healthcare.
In last year’s Annual Report, we covered the first of the three events.
The second event – on Housing took place in May 2024 and included contributions from Positive Action on Housing and the Govanhill community group MERGE. It was attended by

around 30 people who took part in discussions around housing issues particularly in relation to problems encountered by BAME communities and how and where they could get advice and help.
The third event was organised on the theme of Health and Social Care, exploring critical challenges, aiming to shed light on the barriers faced by ethnic minorities and marginalised communities in accessing essential services. It took place in the Deep End Centre on 15[th] November 2024 and was attended by a range of groups and individuals including some from the nearby Govanhill community. Attendance was approx. 25 people. Speakers included Kirsty Turkington on the development of dental services for the community.
Unfortunately, one speaker had to cancel at the last minute due to family illness.
Notwithstanding this there was a good general discussion followed by an impromptu musical performance and dancing.
Our other activities over the year focused on maintaining our web and social media presence and building up our contacts and networks. We struggled to recruit any staff to help with admin work and the Trustees and volunteers continued to do the work of the charity.
As a result of not being able to employ admin support, we had an underspend and having approached the Lottery Fund they agreed to extend the grant through to the next financial year to allow us to run more events. These will be reported on in our next Annual Report.

Independent Examiner’s Report
to the Trustees of Honorary Scotians SCIO
| report on the accounts of the charity for the period ended 30 April 2025 which are set out on pages 8 to 9.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustees Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended).
The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of regulation 10(1)(d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1)(c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent Examiner’s Statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations (as amended). An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently | do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
Independent Examiner’s Statement
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention, other than that given below
-
Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
e to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and
-
e to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations have not been met, or
To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
Matter of Concern: The trustees do not currently have a reserves policy, and with limited unrestricted reserves, there are concerns about their future financial sustainability.
