GREEN GATE SCIO

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2022

The Trustees have pleasure in presenting their report and unaudited financial statements on the activities of Green Gate SCIO for the year ended 31 March 2022.

Objectives and Activities:

Green Gate SCIO’s objectives are:

1) The prevention and relief of poverty (outdoor activities for the most disadvantaged children and young people in Midlothian) - providing free of charge new outdoor opportunities for children and young people within and outside of their local area (including nearby countryside and seaside) will contribute to their personal growth (new knowledge, inspiration, motivation, increased self-esteem, confidence, resilience and wellbeing, new friendships, team working, reduced isolation). Personal growth is crucial in both fighting existing negative impacts of poverty as well as prevention. Activities provided by Green Gate will help children and young people in life as well as they will improve their chances of moving forward in education and build their employability skills.

(2) To advance the education of the Community about its natural heritage and/or history, environment, and culture – participants will be able to increase their knowledge about their surroundings through various educational expeditions. Young people will be given an opportunity to work towards various award schemes (Saltire Award, Dynamic Youth Award, John Muir Award, Duke of Edinburgh Award)

(3) The advancement of health – outdoor physical activities provided by Green Gate will increase both mental and physical health of participants:

a. activities for children → forest club: games, free play, bush craft, walking/running, mindfulness, relaxation

b. Activities for young people → outdoor expeditions into the wild: lowland/hillwalking, countryside and coastal explorations, mindfulness, yoga, focus on team building, resilience, employability, and social skills,

c. Activities for adults → similar to activities provided for young people (outdoor expeditions into the wild) but focused more on reducing social isolation and mental health issues associated with it with group therapy run by qualified and experienced counsellor

d. Activities for elderly people → braking barriers to participation: reducing social isolation, increasing mental and physical health through outdoor activities individually tailored for group members reflecting their personal needs and interests

(4) The advancement of environmental protection or improvement – working in partnership with organisations such as: Wildlife Trust, British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, RSPB to name a few to develop community projects aiming at restoration of local habitats simultaneously increasing participants’ (community members) knowledge about the environment and how to protect it from climate change

Achievements & Performance:

No activities took place.

Plans for Future Periods:

It is anticipated that the charity will be wound up in the near future.

Financial Review: Results/Financial Position :

We had no income or expenditure during the year.

Reserves Policy:

It is the policy of the charity to maintain unrestricted funds which are the free reserves of the charity at an appropriate level. This should equate to approximately two to three months of unrestricted expenditure. This will provide sufficient funds to cover necessary operational costs. Due to the size and operations of the organisation, this is not always possible.

Respective Responsibilities of the Trustees and the Examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of Independent Examiners Statement

My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent Examiners Statement

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

  2. to keep accounting records in accordance with section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and

  3. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations have not been met, or

  4. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
