## **Spean Bridge Golf Club SCIO** ## **SCO50757** **For the Year Ended 31st October 2024** Spean Bridge Golf Club Officers l Trustees ## **Spean Bridge Golf Club SCIO – Annual Report 2025** ## **President’s report** I’m starting my report with the sad news of long time member, , who died recently. was a very keen player who consistently turned out at the ladies section competitions. I’d like to extend the sympathies of the club to family and friends. I feel the last year that the club has kept improving and the members are receiving value for money. We’ve committed ourselves to invest in new equipment this year and hopefully will make gains on course condition. We’ve got improvements planned for this year; specifically new tees at numbers 2 and 8. I’m hoping our new greens mower will show early gains and enhance the condition of our greens throughout the season. I’m hoping to see more people taking part in club competitions and would encourage everyone to try and get an o�icial handicap as well as come along and see if you enjoy competition golf. It would also be great to see some younger members and junior golfers become involved with the club. We could, as a club, put more e�ort into encouraging that involvement. give their time in maintaining the course and those who do all the administrative work of the club. The club would literally fold without the voluntary work of several members who give their time and energy in keeping our club going. ## **Secretary’s Report** Membership currently stands at 128 members compared with 131 for the same time last year. The make up of the membership is 95 Regular adults 15 – 18 to 25 category 15 Juniors 8 winter members – which hopefully we can convert to full members this year 5 Sponsorship memberships Approximately 6 members this year were from the Strabag workers camp. As the camp is now winding down these members are unlikely to rejoin this year. While our membership levels are satisfactory, to help keep sub rates down, we need to work hard to encourage new members to join us. The committee will be doing their best to promote our club and I would ask that all our members do their part in attracting new folks to join up. As you will have seen from the treasurer's report, ourfinances for the past year have shown a healthy profit. However as mentioned in my recent emailto all members. we are facinga number of additional costs this year. the most significant beingthe hirelpurchase of a new greens machine. We are also looking at above inflation costs on Scottish Golf Subscriptions. f uel. electricity, gas and insurance costs. For this reason the committee are proposing a 9.5% increase in membership subscription rates. On the golfingfront. our members have once again put Spean Bridge Golf Club on the map. At a team level the ladies magnificently defended the Interclub cup and the gents brought home the Highlander cup for the first time in 5 years. Individually. a huge congratulations to our president for coming second in Scottish Nationals Medal Final having qualified forthe event alongside the Captain and the after all 3 put in a great display in the regional finals. At a club competition level congratulations to our club champions this year, and to everyone who won an event this year. and Competition participation overthe last year has declined slightly compared to recent years. I would encourage everyone in the club to come along and enjoy some competitive golf and also the enjoy the craic at the nineteenth hole. Turningtothe course, I would once again like to thank forthe outstandingwork he has done over the pastyear. As usual. he has gone way beyond our expectations and the feedbackfrom visitors and members alike is always very complementary. Thisyear we are planningto remodel the second tee, fill in the 5" bunker and levelthe 8" tee. We would welcome the help of any of members to assist in these activities. At the clubhouse, you will have noticed that we have replaced the decking last year. I would also like to thank for overseeing this project and for taking on the clubhouse convenor role and keeping the place clean and tidy. Fund raisingfor the club has become an increasingly important part of our income over the past fewyears. This yearwe brought in over £4.5K with activities including the hosting events for Lochaber rugby and shinty clubs, and also the 4 ball auction. A bigthankyou to all the volunteers who helped organise and support these events and also forthe kind donations from the rugby and shinty clubs and from the prize winners of the who generously donated their winnings back to the club. Also, huge appreciation to the for making the highlight of the year once again and for their very kind donation from the raff le. As manyof you will know . a former member ofthe club. announced recently he is sufferingfrom Motor Neurone Disease and incredibly, he has launched himself into fund raisingto supportfamilies facingthe same challenges that are facingtoday. I knowthat many ofyou are already donatingto his charity events but to do our part as a club we will be holding a 72 hole challenge day in July. We are just about to start planning forthe event and would invite anyone who wishes to join the organising committee to get in touch. I hope you all will be able to dig dip and sponsors the teams that will be taking part. In an attempt to improve our profile and to make visitors more aware that we are here. we have joined a marketinggroup known as Golf Highland. We hope thatthe additional exposure will help to increase ourvisitor/green fee revenue and hopefully land a few more members as well. The group is looking at a number of initiatives including arrangements for preferential green fee rates for members from participating clubs. In addition l am looking to formalise reduced rate agreements with some out local clubs (Dragon's Tooth. Fortwilliam. Traigh. Fort Augustus). I will keep you informed of developments and associated opportunities. Finally, I would like to thank allthe members of management committee for their help and support throughoutthe year. Seniors Report The seniorsection continues to flourish throughout lastyearwith good turnouts most weeks. Congratulations to who ran awaywith the Senior League competition and to￿ whowon the senior medal final. Also to who yet again took awaythe JP Mainardi cup from our senioraway day at Muir or Ord. The seniorfunds currently stand at £410, so once again we are lookingforward to a heavily subsidised away day. Throughout the winter we have experimented with giving our players the opportunity to play eitherthe yellow or the red tees. This has proved very successful. and it offers the opportunities for some of our players, who struggle with carries off some yellow tees, to participate and be competitive. We will continue with this arrangement throughout 2025 Ladies Section Report Spean Bridge ladies enjoyed a good season last year. most competitions were played either on the Saturday orthe alternative day, beingThursday. We feel this encourages more to play having an alternative day and therefore will continue with this for the 2025 season. We appreciate all the work has done on the course, are pleased with the new tees but not sure we'll be happywith the bunkers back in play once Kenny's underlinggets his hands on them. Three of our ladies, North which was held at Grantown on Spey, unfortunately none of us managed to qualify for the final in 2024. We would, however, like to congratulate the three men, who all qualified and delighted that was in the top three for the whole of Scotland. A great representation for Spean Bridge Golf Club. This year we have qualifying and playing at Hamilton in June and wish good luck for representing the men this year. Spean Bridge ladies joined Fort William and Traigh for the annual Interclub which was held at Traigh in June and once more Spean Bridge ladies defended the Silver tray. This year it is to be held in Spean Bridge and we hope once more to retain it. We will also be awarding the Heather Simpson trophy to the best individual stableford score and will invite Heather's family to present the this. We would like to congratulate Janice who won it in 2024. Our Monday evening competitions were well supported and while these are mostly fun nights of golf, it was good to have some of these qualifying for our handicaps. The new trophy in memory of Jean Kennedy was awarded to a who won the Monday night 9 hole competitions, she later met up with , and was presented with the trophy. Club in May. We all thoroughly enjoyed the course, weather was amazing as was the company. Congratulations to Gina who won on the day. Some of the ladies and a few of the gents enjoyed a stay the previous night in Dunkeld. We look forward to playing again in 2025 at the Club outing with the possibility of us having a night away again. Ladies 18 hole competitions, played on Saturdays at 8.30am or alternatively on Thursdays, were all attended bar one Medal Comp in July. For the 2025 season we have decided to add in a 6th round to the competitions as we found finishing at the end of August/beginning of September was too early and hope that this will be a success. As mentioned we will also carry on with the alternative night to encourage more ladies to play. We all look forward to the events of the coming season, both on and o� the course. We hope that we manage to encourage more ladies for the 2025 season. We are delighted to welcome who joined us at the beginning of August 2024 and hope to get many more games played with her and all others lady members. Just leaves me to say a big thank you to our Club Secretary for all the work behind the scenes and continuing to be our club secretary, there is a lot of work that goes on that a lot of members don't know about and we really do appreciate all of work.
