## **Objectives and activities**

Musselburgh Amateur Musical Association (MAMA) recruits' people from a young age and gives people experience in stagecraft and an education in music and musical theatre. As an organisation we give people the opportunity to take part in theatrical productions and the opportunity to socialise with different social groups and cultures. People have a variety of opportunities; acting, singing, dancing, backstage, technical and commercial aspects of running a theatre company for the community to enjoy. Alongside this, we regularly take part in community events. We have also had a focus on providing a supportive friendly space to nurture members well being and mental health.

We started this season differently again with a series of workshops, due to the closure of the Brunton and the feeling that doing two large shows would be too much. The Charity felt though it was also a chance to upskill our members and build on the opportunities we could offer members. We held workshops in

- Building a Character

- Audition Prep

- Vocal Technique

- Song Bank Rehearsal

- Movement and musical fitness

- Stage management

All the workshops were successful at increasing members confidence and it was felt that if we could add a skills workshop every season this would increase the abilities of the company.

## **Achievements and performance**

One of our key achievements was not seeing a drop in members as were not working on a full musical. As a company we achieved this by the great support from members and the introduction of a 24hr musical, which we were the first company in the Lothians to do this. This year we had 46 main members and 25 non performing members. The ages of our members ranged from 10 to 88, with 5 life members.

One area we were keen to build on was to increase the support in rehearsals for members with additional support needs. We introduced a wellness team who were available for members to speak to concerning problems in rehearsals, the wellness team were also able to advise the production teams and speak with them to solve issues.

We produced year 2 of our Christmas show, by changing venue and introduced a meet the Santa opportunity, and improved raffle prizes. We were able too profit from the show. We also saw double the number of members taking part in the performance. This was also a key musical event aimed at younger children.

Our first 24hr musical -Adrian Mole, was an amazing performance and social event. Highlights were:

- Stretch class

- The live Facebook and Reels

- Our young adult members taking the lead in the production

- Putting on a first class show in 24hr

- Working in a new venue

- Increased press focus

Our Annual revue took place in May and showed great company resilience as we yet again moved venues. We did though add more theatrical elements into the revue with a good range of songs for lots of styles. We achieved greater control of FOH and increased profit, and were able to theme these to the show.

We also held 2 beach socials for the company , a production team and committee meal during the season.

## **Financial review**

A difficult year financially with £19,295 deficit following our two shows. With the closure of The Brunton, alternative venues were required which brought additional costs to the shows for venue hire and technical equipment hire.

Ticket sales were unfortunately low for the season which we contribute to the change of locations.

**Future plans**

We need to increase the membership fees to cover our basic costs to run. We need to increase non performing members and their involvement in the charity plus wider out responsibility of the work load. Review the Friends of MAMA and whether we still want to push this. We have to set realistic budgets and find a way of selling more tickets. We have to engage in our local community to increase fundraising and ticket sales.

We have to continue to increase our social media and website presence and perform locally whether in a theatre space or other venues. We want to return to performing a full musical for our 75[th] year.
