Introduction
The Trustees of Maryburgh Men’s Shed are pleased to present their annual report for the year ended 31st August 2025. This report provides an overview of the charity’s activities, achievements, governance, and financial position, reflecting our commitment to supporting the wellbeing and social inclusion of men in the Maryburgh community.
Objectives and Activities
Maryburgh Men’s Shed was established to create a safe, welcoming space where men can connect, share skills, and work on community and other projects. Our objectives remain:

To promote social inclusion and reduce isolation among men in the local area

To foster wellbeing through practical activities and peer support

To encourage the sharing of skills, knowledge, and experience

To support local initiatives and enhance our community environment

Achievements and Performance
Over the past year, Maryburgh Men’s Shed has continued to grow, welcoming new members and developing a variety of projects. Key achievements include:

Regular weekly sessions attended by an average of 18 members

Successful completion of our Energy Project to :- Secure funding ; Install and Commission Solar Panels with battery storage ; Install and Commission Air Source Heating ; Increase roof insulation thickness and replace room lighting using more efficient lighting units

Workshop sessions on woodworking and machine competency
New Solar Panels & Air Source Heaters Installed

Collaborative activities with other community groups including Maryburgh Community Woodland Group and Community Council

Organisation of health and wellbeing talks in partnership with NHS Highland

New working equipment made available
Feedback from members highlights the positive impact of the Shed on mental health and wellbeing, confidence, and social engagement.

Financial Review
The charity remains in a stable financial position. During the reporting period, income was generated through grants, fundraising from Project sales and donations from supporters. Beyond the main expenditure of the year on Energy improvements, expenditure was primarily on new tools, materials, workshop maintenance, utility and insurance costs.

Income: £96,388 (including grants from the Highland Council ; CARES ; Clothworkers Charity)

Expenditure: £92,382 (Energy Project, tools, materials, insurance, and utilities)

Reserves: £4,006 carried forward to support future activities and in line with our requirement to maintain £3,000 in reserves to address the possibility of financial shocks, should they arise.
The Trustees are confident that the charity’s financial management is robust and that resources are used effectively to further our aims.
Structure, Governance, and Management
Maryburgh Men’s Shed is a SCIO registered charity, governed by a voluntary board of Trustees. The Trustees meet monthly to oversee operations, ensure compliance with charity law, and set strategic direction. Day-to-day activities are managed by the Trustees with support from member volunteers.
Policies on safeguarding, health and safety, and equal opportunities are reviewed annually. All Trustees receive training relevant to their responsibilities.

We were pleased to appoint a new Trustee and Secretary – to our Board during this year is already making a positive contribution to our Charity, supporting our efforts to secure beneficial utility contracts and key administration support.
Plans for the Future
Looking ahead, Maryburgh Men’s Shed aims to:

Expand workshop facilities to accommodate more members and new activities

Introduce additional health and wellbeing programmes

Secure funding for further improvements to our base building

Strengthen partnerships with community groups, local organisations and funders

Continue to secure sustainable funding for long-term stability

| The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. |

| My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts. |
