Objectives and Activities
The advancement of environmental protection or improvement.
The SCIO will promote, advance and further charitable purposes. The charity holds no assets.
Summary of Activities
Our directors continue to be busy with individual local projects all with a climate and environmental focus, happening in Ardgay, Rosehall, Lairg and Rogart.
We have variously attended and taken part in discussion as follows:
-
the Green Health workshops in April and May and supported the Highlands & Islands Climate Charter Relaunch.
-
we ran several Repair Cafes in collaboration with Re:Circulate Sutherland and Ardgay Hall.
-
the working group organising the Highlands & Islands Climate Festival (2024)
-
a discussion with the NHS regarding using their facilities to develop orchard projects. Sadly, this proved to challenging for several reasons.
-
discussions with the KoS Fisheries Trust regarding community composting. Additionally
-
we ran two climate cafes in February, in Ardgay and Rosehall. The latter instigated a Rosehall Community Growing group.
-
organised three Garden Swap Events at Ardgay Hall in collaboration with the KoS Growing Group and Ardgay Hall.
-
our “Orchard Sutherland” project continued, this year with 35 fruit trees being privately purchased and planted in Feb 2024.
-
we encouraged the use of peat free compost by placing a 2 pallet bulk order to share out.
Sadly, the Future Communities Highland & Islands had a few meetings at the beginning of the year, but has now stopped.
However, our various Facebook chat groups, including the key Planet Sutherland group, enabling ongoing discussion and promotion of related topics, thus keeping the conversations alive and growing.
We would like to thank everyone who takes part in and helps out with our activities and conversations, and all the other groups we work with and support.

Appendix 2: Summary of work carried out between 31/3/25 and xx/2025
We co-designed and organised the Kyle of Sutherland Food Convention. This was a hugely successful event covering a wide range of topics and attended by a wide and diverse range of delegates interested in increasing food production here. Discussions are ongoing regarding the next steps and include community gardening in Rosehall.
Promoting the concept of environmentally friendly gardening was helped with a focussed discussion on no-dig gardening at the Kyle or Sutherland Growing Group.
