Objectives: The Trust is established for the public benefit for the following purposes: 3.1 to promote the high standards of planning and architecture in or affecting the area of benefit*. 3.2 to educate the public in the geography, history, natural history and architecture of the area of benefit*. and 3.3 to secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of buildings (including any building as defined in section 290(1) of the Town and Country Planning Act 1971) and other features of historic architectural or public interest in the area of benefit*. *and the 'area of benefit' shall mean the area comprising the counties of Cleveland, Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, North Yorkshire and Tyne and Wear ('the Northern Regions') and Scotland and elsewhere as the Directors may from time to time decide provided that the Directors shall regard the Northern Regions as their primary concern.
