Objectives and activities

The Seafield Seafront Trust was formed so as to accept on behalf of the community, the seafront area of North-A-Voe, Yell, Shetland. This area incorporates the listed structures: pier, bulwarks, herring station, noosts, ruined storehouse, all relating to Charles Ogilvy, early 19th century merchant. This area is to be gifted to the Trust by the owners of the Seafield Estate. Our purposes are:

The Trust’s activities are concentrated on Seafield, North-A-Voe, Yell, Shetland Islands. The folk in North-A-Voe are without a location for social and cultural activities due to the decline of the local hall, loss of a local post office and general reduction in public amenity. It is the Trust’s aim that Seafield can become a hub for local community activity. The Trust’s approach is to work with the community to develop a long-term plan for the development of Seafield as a linear park.

2

Structure, governance and management

The Seafield Seafront Trust is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation.

On the 20[th] of May 2020, the Seafield Seafront Trust was awarded Scottish Charitable Incorporated Status by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. The structure of the organisation consists of the CHARITY TRUSTEES who are also the organisation’s only members and comprise the organisation’s BOARD. The board comprises eight trustees.

Trustee recruitment and appointment

The trustee positions become vacant at the end of each year, and are filled through nominations presented at the annual general meeting.

Achievements and performance

In our fifth year as a charity, the Trust has focused on reassessing its future direction. After careful consideration, the Trustees decided to discontinue the legal process to accept the gift of the Seafield Seafront from the Seafield Estate. This decision was prompted by the lack of progress in transferring the title to the Trust. The funds allocated for this process have now been fully spent, and despite these efforts, the Trust has been unable to secure the title within the available budget.

Additionally, the significant time lapse—nearly five years—since the original offer of the gift has severely limited the Trust’s ability to advance its objectives. This challenge has also been reflected in the difficulty of filling an existing Trustee vacancy. With two further vacancies arising, the Trustees agreed it was prudent to pause any new financial commitments and reflect on the Trust’s future direction.

The Trust held its Annual General Meeting on 18 September 2024 at 6:30 pm in the Rum Room, North-A-Voe. At the meeting, the Convenor, John Tonner, and Trustee, Robert Williamson, both announced that they would not seek re-election due to declining health.
