Objectives and activities

Strathspey Works — Grantown Remakery was set up following consultation with local people, businesses and schools to provide a service in the North of Badenoch and Strathspey for young people who were having difficulty in the academic world, those in transition from school onwards, young adults with a learning disability and those with poor wellbeing to develop work and employability skills and move closer to the Job Market.

Mission

Strathspey Works — Grantown Remakery will provide Employment Skills Development, volunteering opportunities and support for Young People who may be having difficulty in Transition from School to Further Education and Employment, Adults with a Disability or with Mental Ill-Health, supporting all in their journey to recovery and towards fulfilment of their personal goals.

Purposes

The advancement of education.

The advancement of community development. The advancement of environmental protection or improvement

We achieve our Purposes through;

  1. The Repair, Recycling and resale of items which would otherwise have gone to Landfill.

  2. Using these processes asa skill development tool for those individuals who have difficulty with academic work, who may have additional support needs, who are learning disabled and who struggle with transition to the world of work and employment. The individuals learn practical skills, workplace skills and gain employability skills experience through formal training with a partner.

We work with a wide range of partners, including Barnardos, Grantown Academy, Job Centre Plus, local businesses, The Grantown Society,

and the Community to provide a repair and refurbishment service for furniture and household items.

Through undertaking this work individuals learn practical and workplace skills and can attain Employability Skilis Qualifications where appropriate through our partner Barnardos. There is significant development of ‘Soft Skills’ such as a growth in confidence, teamwork, timekeeping, communication, and workplace awareness as well as development of practical use of Core Skills and knowledge of Maths and English. There is also a development of an understanding of our core values ‘Trust, Respect. Consideration and Sensitivity.

We are a work placement while the individuals can undertake their Employability Skills and Employment Fund Training, they can earn a ‘Workplace Skills Certificate’ (internal) and Employability Skills Qualifications at L2 and L3. Where required, other work placements can be arranged and supported with local businesses.

Services have been offered for younger teenagers who are operating in an unstructured and often chaotic manner or finding classroom based academia difficult. We have developed a service which supports their attendance at school and is preventing them from becoming excluded. Feedback from the school indicates that this is proving to be a valuable experience for the young people. This service is also provided to Families who may request placements with us. "The young people are really enjoying all the experiences that the Remakery has to offer them, have gained in confidence and are really benefiting from communicating with adults and generally improving several life skills.

One young person has also gained the ability of independent travel and become much more aware of the road safety aspects and the Workshop Supervisor has worked improving his fine motor skills with the work he has done in the workshop.

One of the volunteers has worked wonders with the young people in the craft room and they have brought several things back to school to show me." (Head of Pupil Support)

One of the young people has been withdrawn from school

and is now home tutored but still attends the Remakery on a weekly basis.

We additionally provide services for young learning-disabled adults, helping with the development of life planning and work skills. As an example, we continued to support an autistic young person to enable him to hold a job, he has now held down two part time jobs. His family still express surprise and pleasure to the increase in his confidence and his ability to follow through on tasks. A further Learning-Disabled Young Adult has been enabled to take part time work and continues to receive support from us by working as a volunteer. We currently work with a further five young Learning-Disabled Adults who are developing their skills.

A began a partnership with Job Centre Plus to support those not in employment and suffering from poor Wellbeing. Individuals could come to us on a 6-week placement to develop confidence and work skills. Placements led to individuals moving along the employment pipeline towards employment. This service is also available to the local Medical Practice through ‘Social Prescribing’ and for ex-forces personnel.

Grantown Remakery celebrated its 5" Birthday in November 2024. As Stated in previous Annual Reports businesses take up to 5 years to grow into sustainable entities. The challenging shutdowns due to the Pandemic and to School Closures and the financial situation has been difficult for individuals and businesses alike. The additional challenges in previous years related to increased costs and reduction in sales income. This year has demonstrated significantly improved income through the shop. A Partnership with Circular Communities Scotland enabled us to set up a repair service which benefited us in two ways. Firstly, the income from the partnership allowed us to set up and run the repair service and secondly, as a result of that led to many members of the public seeking repairs for their own items. That in turn has led to an in crease in excess of 50% in our shop income.

Through some additional grant aid we were able to open for a fourth day, and with our increased income have ended the year with a small surplus.

The coming year however will continue to be challenging due to the current economic circumstances within the country.

Structure, governance and management

Strathspey Works ~ Grantown Remakery is a SCIO governed by a Constitution.

Trustee Recruitment and Appointment

We have hada full Board in operation for 2024-25.

Achievements and Performance

We have again received excellent support from many people, organisations, trusts and business locally. This has enabled us to have some significant outcomes. We have maintained our outcome figure of 85% of eligible individuals into work, have assisted the group of young people to maintain and indeed benefit from their school placements and continued support for support for Learning-Disabled young adults maintaining employment as well as providing support for the family of one where a family member suffered severe health difficulties. We have provided support for a number of Adults who were unemployed or who may suffer from poor wellbeing or mental ill health and will continue to do so. Our Workshop Supervisor has continued to make a significant difference to the quality of learning available to individuals and to the quality of repair and refurbishment undertaken. As a result, our repair service has shown significant growth over the year, with many items of an antique nature coming for repair.

We were able to employ an Assistant one day per week due to some additional funding. That appointment has proved invaluable and we have received funding to assist in maintaining the position for 2025-26.

We continue to have excellent support from Community Volunteers who have grown in number and who bring support and skill to our services, Local Businesses, and the Community at large who continue to provide us with large quantities of furniture for restoration or repair.

We would also like to acknowledge the support of Arnold Clark Van Hire who now provide us with our monthly van hire free of charge.

Our successes for the year are without doubt the continued placement of individuals into work but also in being in a position to continue to trade and provide our services throughout exceedingly difficult circumstances. Retail and ‘The High Street’ are seeing many closures and to be able to continue trading and developing is a real success.

Our Landlord has again been incredibly supportive of our work, and we continue to be grateful for that support and advice.

Local businesses have also been supportive, €.g. we have continued to get loads of wood offcuts that we are able to use for repairing and fabricating items.

We have continued to develop our ‘Fair Trade’ policy;

  1. Grantown Remakery actively supports the regeneration of Grantown High Street and Town Centre.

  2. All funding earned by Grantown Remakery will be reinvested to support young people of the area to help develop their

work and employability skills and to move closer to employment.

  1. All services and goods required by the Remakery will be purchased locally where possible.

  2. Grantown Remakery is currently in Partnership with Grantown Grammar School, Grantown Business Association and Barnardos. We will form partnerships with other local businesses and organisations as we develop our services.

  3. All invoices will be paid within 7 days in acknowledgement of the importance of cash flow for small businesses.

  4. Grantown Remakery actively supports the Circular Economy. This policy has been very well received by the local business community.

Financial review

Financially, this has been a slightly easier trading year, sales have continued to increase and with the increase in repair income along with excellent support from Grant Making Trusts, management of our costs, has meant that we have ended the year with a surplus of £2065 despite opening for an additional day.

Statement of the Charity’s policy on reserves

Our Policy is to have 3 months running costs as a reserve, this amounts to £15,950. We have increased our reserves by almost £3,900 this year by regular saving from shop income. Reserves currently stand at £11,451. We have continued to save through a standing order set up following last year’s financial outcome.

Plans

Pians for the next year are ambitious, we are seeking funding to enable us to open for five days, allowing for an increase in all of our services. In our most ambitious plan we are seeking funding firstly to rent but then to purchase the shop next door which would allow us to separate out some of our services and create additional space to increase them. We have begun to receive funding towards this aim.

Funders

The Staff, Volunteers and Board of Grantown Remakery would like to thank the following Trusts and Organisations for their financial support.

The Berry Burn Community Trust — Capital Funding The Cairngorm Trust —- Revenue Funding Circular Communities Scotland - Revenue Funding The Foyle Foundation — Revenue Funding

Scottish Children’s Lottery Trust - Revenue Funding

Additional information

Once again thanks must go to the Project Manager, Development Manager, Workshop Supervisor and Assistant for their work throughout the year along with special thanks to our volunteers for the time that they have given to the work undertaken. We would also like to thank local businesses for their support and the population of the area for their unending generosity to us.
