Objectives and activities Charitable purposes To enhance the oppcKtunities for Malawian stsjdents from poorer bad(grounds to enter the study prcoramme at the University of Malawi College of Mediane {now re-named as the Kamuzu University of Health st￿nCes IKUHeS]) that culminates in award of a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree. To raise fund5 that can prowde supp)rt for Students in the form of a -hardship fijnd" to be called "Dentist to Dentisf for Malawan students enrolled on the Bachdor of Dentsl Surgery programme at the Universty of Malaw College of Mediane (now KUHeSI who are struggling lo fijnd costs of f￿d. ac￿)M￿xxlatIc￿ or transp(xtats'c￿. The overall prc4Jramme ofwork has benefrtted from award of a granl1£1.3m frc 2018- 20231 frcrfn scotb.sh &)vernment as part of its intemational development prcoramme. A C￿e-year extension to the MalDent Project was agreed in March 2023, adjusb.ng the end date of the grant to 31S1 March 2024 and increasing total funding to £1.6m. A Bachelor of Denta Surgery IBDSI degree course has been estsblished at KUHeS as one of the worf( packages of the MalDent Project The course was launched in 2019 and now has 124 students studying towards the BDS degree. The inibal cohort of 10 students graduated as Malaw's first ever home trained dentists in April 2025. Many students in a Iow4ncorne county such as Malawi struggle lo meet the costs of attending higher degree programmes, particularly during the transibon from their home fami￿ environment to the university. Inevitably this means that some very capable students are unable lo continue their for fiscal reasons rather than through academic challenges. The challenge has been made even more signfficant because of the ongoing fall in value of the malaW￿n Kwacha. This impacts negatively upon development of a national skilled workforce, in this case relating lo oral health (Malaw currently has 50 denb.sts for 22 millicffi people). The Student Aid structure via this SCIO aims to provide addrtional support through fund raising and related activrties, helping financially r• but capable students to ccnplete the BDS degree programme and enter Malawi's heablhcare workfor¢.

APPENDIX 1 Achievements and performance Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period The process established in 2023 for equttable distribUt￿n of fvnds to the dental students who were suffering frc*m financial hardship in Malawi proved very effective in 2024. The small local committee established by the Head of the Dental School at KUHeS with colleagues working in other areas of the Universty and with support of the MalDent Project Administrator has functioned well. The welfare account wqlh the National Bank in Malawi eontinues to aeeept donations from MalDent Student Aid and any other dc￿Or5 who wished to contribute. Fomial applications from students for ffinan￿al support are sought at the beginning of each academic semester. The committee reV￿w$ the applications and detemiines the out¢¢)mes through a r¢)bust lo￿1 pr￿ss. Awards are then m•Je through ￿ auditable financial transfer to the indNidual sttKlents. Dunng 2024. a transfer of £201XI was made on 6th June from the MalDent Sludent ￿"d CAF Bank account to the Natsonal Bank welfare account. Dunng 2024. 48 bursaries were awarded to dental students facing financial hardship at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences. These trMJrsaries svJntficantty reduce financial worries for students. allowing them to concentrate on their studies and retain their places on the BDS degree Fryramme. The following are trNo messages of thanks received from re￿pients of tMJrsaries.' -Am so much excited to hear this. Thank you so much for granting m& this opportunty. This will surely help me a lot. I will be able to eat pmper meals every day. May God bless you. on￿ again l am very glad for this offer and it will help me to woth with an extra mile in stud￿5..

Financial review Brief statement of the charty's policy on resep4es The charity does not require to maintain any reserves of scale as costs of govemance are minimal with indiwduals donating their time to establish the tharity. | As the ffinanekil activibes will be fundraising in nature then all eosts wtth minor exception will be charitable and therefore the Trustees do not consider that there is likely to be a requirement for holding fijnds other than thrO￿h timing of distribub￿. Details of any deficit NIA Donated facilities and services (if any) Dunng the peri(MJ under review, no activrtyes were undertaken that required specffic fa￿li*"es.
