## **Trustees' Annual Report** 

The trustees present their report and accounts for the year ended 31 March 2025. 

## **Structure, Governance and Management** 

Baba Yangu is led by a diverse and experienced Board of Trustees who ensure the charity delivers its aims. The Board of Trustees has overall responsibility for governing the charity’s strategy and finances and monitoring its performance. The charity was a Scottish Charitable Unincorporated organisation (Charity number SC048623) registered 15th August 2018 and changed its legal form into Baba Yangu Foundation (SCIO) on 23rd January 2019. Baba Yangu Foundation (SCIO) became a registered charity in Scotland (charity number SC049888) on 23rd January 2020. It has a single tier consisting of the members and the Board of Trustees. 

Trustees are appointed in accordance with the constitution. Most Trustee vacancies are advertised in a range of media, applicants are required to submit a CV and undergo an interview with the chair. The chair will then invite selected candidates to meet the board. The procedure for appointment of Trustees is set out in Clause 18 of the Constitution. 

## **Objectives and Activities** 

1. The relief of poverty in Uganda amongst young children and adults living on the streets through the provision of shelter and accommodation and by providing food, water and clothing. 

2. The advancement of education in Uganda amongst young children and adults living on the streets through the provision of education in order to equip them with relevant employment skills. 

3. The advancement of religion in Uganda amongst young children and adults living on the streets by teaching and preaching scripture and broadening their knowledge of the Christian faith. 

4. The advancement of health amongst children and adults in Uganda. 

5. The advancement of health in Scotland amongst children and adults from the African and Afro-Caribbean community by providing mental health awareness support in order to eradicate stigma, isolation and assist in gaining access to treatment options for those that need it. 

**The charity’s mission and main aims:** At Baba Yangu Foundation (BYF), community is at the heart of everything we do. We recognise the unique challenges surrounding mental well-being in our society, particularly in ethnically diverse communities, and believe in our collective strength to address these needs together. Our vision is to empower communities for well-being, tackling the stigma around mental health and fostering a warm, vibrant environment where young people and their families feel supported, connected, and empowered.

## **Trustees' Annual Report** 

**Summary of key activities carried out in the year:** Throughout the year, BYF delivered a range of impactful programmes designed to support the mental health and overall well-being of young people and their families. These activities included: 

•Workshops and Mental Health Training: Providing essential skills and knowledge through structured sessions. 

•Group Wellbeing Sessions: Creating safe spaces for self-expression, connection, and joy. 

• SUSO Boys 2025 Project: A social development program specifically for boys aged 8-18 from ethnically diverse backgrounds. This initiative focuses on emotional literacy, life skills, confidence-building, community engagement, and peer mentorship to foster mentally strong and socially aware young men. 

- SUSO 2024 Programme (Girls): Building on previous success, this programme continued to engage young girls, creating a vital support network and fostering community connections. 

• Healthy Minds Project 2025: This project aimed to help families explore and resolve relational dynamics, applying systemic principles to understand inherited patterns of interaction and communication. It facilitated constructive dialogue and worked towards breaking cultural taboos surrounding family mental health. 

## **Achievements and Performance** 

The year has seen significant achievements and positive impacts across all our programmes: 

**SUSO Boys 2025 Project:** This new initiative is set to build a generation of confident, mentally strong, and socially aware young men, with anticipated outcomes including a reduction in educational struggles and improved mental health. 

**SUSO 2024 Programme (Girls):** The programme achieved an incredible turnout,engaging between 24 and 42 young girls per session,with over 55 young people registering interest. This demonstrates the high demand and the trust built within the community. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive: 

- One parent shared: _"Team Baba Yangu, I can't find enough words to sum up the dedication and passion you have given every week to our girls. The impact, the memories, and the experience is something they will carry in their hearts forever."_ 

- Another parent noted: _"Thank you Team Baba Yangu for a great six weeks and an amazing Cultural Day_ 

**Healthy Minds Project 2025:** This project successfully fostered deeper understanding, open communication, and stronger family relationships. Testimonials highlight its impact: 

a participant) stated: _"I think this program should reach more communities and include more sessions. Families are breaking down, and these discussions are so important."_ 

- son added: _"It was good to hear different perspectives and see my own feelings reflected in my family._

**Challenges faced and how they were managed:** A key challenge identified was the overwhelming demand for services, as seen with the SUSO 2024 programme needing to cap participation due to staffing and costs. This highlights the critical need for continued funding and capacity building to meet the growing needs of the community.

## **Achievements and Performance** 

**Partnerships and collaborations:** BYF continues to strengthen its community ties through valuable partnerships. Notably, we are collaborating with The Love Fountain Church and IFADENS to deliver family wellbeing programmes across various regions, expanding our reach and impact. 

## **Plans for Future Periods:** 

Baba Yangu Foundation is committed to sustained growth and increased impact in the coming year. Our key goals include: 

- Vehicle Purchase: To remove transport barriers and enable community outreach across Glasgow, 

- Renfrewshire, and beyond. 

- SCIO Transition: Moving to a two-tier SCIO with structured community-led governance to enhance 

- organisational effectiveness. 

- Expansion of Youth and Parents Councils: Building youth leadership and shared decision-making across all BYF programmes. 

- Strengthening Partnerships: Continuing to collaborate with organisations like The Love Fountain Church and 

- IFADENS to deliver impactful family wellbeing programmes. 

- Mentorship Model: Establishing peer-led support where older youth mentor younger children, leveraging life 

- skills developed at BYF. 

These plans reflect our ongoing commitment to providing compassionate, community-rooted care that nurtures minds, strengthens families, and builds futures of dignity, pride, and hope. 

## **Financial Review** 

Income for the year was £44,589 (2024: £29,071) and expenditure was £44,209 (2024: £31,827) leading to the charity generating a net surplus of £380 for the year ended 31 March 2025 (2024: deficit of £2,756). 

At 31 March 2025 the charity held funds of £7,623 (2024: £7,243),with £7,529 of these being restricted (2024: £7,059) and £94 of these being unrestricted free reserves (2024: £184). 

## **Reserves Policy** 

As the running cost of the organisation increases, the trustees will develop a reserve policy and ensure that a sufficient balance of reserves is maintained. At 31 March 2025 the charity held unrestricted reserves of £94 (2024:  £184), the trustees are working to increase the free reserves of the charity.

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner:** 

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

## **Basis of Independent Examiner's statement:** 

My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts. 

## **Independent Examiner's statement:** 

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention: 

1. Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements to: 

- keep accounting records in accordance with section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and 

- prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations 

have not been met, or 

2. To which, in my opinion,attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **7. Related Party Transactions** 

During the year, trustee ceived remuneration of £8,267 for services as director and project worker of the charity (2024: £5,600). The charity trustees received £2,667 (2024: £5,639) and nil (2024: £5,000) as project workers. 

Trustee also donated £610 (2024: £554) within the year. There were no other related party transactions.
