Introduclion
Hebridean Pursulls Outdoor Leaming (HPOLI was established over 30 years ago wth a mission lo
improv6 the lives of young people through outdoor adventure. We believe that by creaiing real
adventures. young ￿Ople can grow and achieve more than Ihey ihought possible whatever their
background. Since our launch in 1991 las Roses Charitable Trust) we have worked wrth thousands of
young people. We deliver residentials. primarily in the West ol Scotland, for groups of young people
from across the UK In In addition we deliver Day and Multi Day Outdoor Adventures in Argyll tor
individuals or groups of young people primarily Irom our local cornmunity.

This year we bade a %ery fond larewell 10 our Founder Palron Slephen Thomas who sadly died in April

As a worldwide expedtioner he left his indomilable mark wherever he ventured. His warm, welcoming,
inclusive nature has continued through the work we continue to do to this day.
Hlgh levéls of activily malntalned
The high levels of activity we rep)rted last year coniinued this year with our residential and day
programmes delivering Outdoor aclivilies for 422 young peDple {5 .0 181 over 75 delivery days. The mix
of this activity shifted lowards day work thus resulting in a reduction in our use ol accommodalion
reducing our direct costs. We have worked with young people from 13 organisations, 11 01 whom we
have worked with belcre. This high number of returning groups allows us 10 éevelop closer working
relationships with both the organisations and the young people in their care - and aL80 reflects the
strength of the relationships we build - a priority for us. These groups included: Oban High School.
Tiree High School, Tiree Primary School, St Columba's Primary School, Dunbeo P"imary School,
Arinagour Primary School (Colll, Summer Sensations, Space @ The Broomhouse Hub, Tykes Young
Carers Sutherland, Bee Well Connected, and Kernow Young Carers (Cornwall).
Whilsl working hard IG develop long ierm relationships wtth organisalions we also want lo rneet and
work with new groups where our capacity allows. This year saw us working with Blue Triangle and
Clued-up Project for the first time. We look fcrward 10 working wilh Ihese groups again n the future.

Increasing the involvemenl of Young People
A locus for us this year has teen to increase our level of engagement wilh Ihe young people we work
wilh to ensure that we understand their needs arkl reflect their wews in Ihe design and delivery of our
courses. To achieve this we hosted a workshop in December at the Oban High School inviting pupils
that had been on one ol our courses over Ihe last 2 years from across different year-groups to join us
to hear Iheir views on how we can betler meet their needs. Creating this opportunity for open
discussion not only provided us witn valuable insight into what is important for our yDung people - the
message ol shared experrence in their peer or Iriendship groups came through loud and clear... but
also provided the young people wilh Ihe cpportunity to re-live some of their advanlures and re-enforce
their positive experierte.
A second area ol locus for us this year has been lo explore new ways to inspire young people lo
connect more with the oul¢oors,' with the aim of creating a lifelong passion for ouldooi pursuits which
we all know is great Icr positive physical and mental health and wellbeing.
In order to cultivale this passion ai a younger age we have piloted a Hebridean Pursurts Outdoor
Learning Taster-Day project with the whole of Sl at Oban High School. In October we viorked with 117
pupils over four days, who tried out rock dimbing and abseiling al a local spot in Garna￿an, Oban. This
generaled a high level of excii&menl and positive energy across the entire year and we have high
hopes of rolling ihis out agan in the coming year.
Strengthening our Governonce
The Covid Pandemic in 2020 forced a significant change in P,ow we operate. We changed from
delivering only through residential programmes to the inlroduciion of a significant programme of Day
arf Mulli Day actNlties for young people in ArgWI as well. This change increased our levels of activity
and necessitated a significant increase in operational suppJrr. It also required that we complele a root
and branch review of our Heailh & Safety procedures to ensure they remain fil for purwse. We have
retained this balance of delivering both residential and day programmes and believe that this flexibility
better meels the needs of the groups we work wtth.
This year we set ourselves the objective of strengthening our Board. Nol only to caler for re￿nI ancl
planned retirements. But to also ensure that we have the skills to secure the future of Hebridean
Pursuits Outdoor Learning. In December 2024 we appointed 5 new iruslees who significantly
strengthen us as an organisation and bring a wealth of experience covering slrategv, governanee,
impact, marketing, youth work and fund raising. In addition - each of our new trustees has a passion
for ensuring ihat young people have the best opportunities and a beliel that outdoor aéventure has a

Financial review
During the 12 monlhs to 31103J2025, the charity received donations and grants 01 £126.9k, a docrgasa
of 10.2 % on the year to 3110312024. This was in part due lo a one OH donation from Camp & Trek for
£23.2k which gave a higher than normal figure in 2023124. This year's figure of £126.9k is more in line
with the figure from 2022123 of £113k.
Income from our charity actlvity was £19.4k and investment income was £3k. Tolal income was
£193.6k. The proportion ol trading income £43.8k to Ihe total income, at 22.6°/), was below board
expectations.
The Trustees expect grants and donations lo continue to be the charity's main source of funding. The
costs of running the chartty and young persons, groups over the reporting period was £176.3k. The
year gave a suiplu5 of £17.3k. whicn Is an increase of 9.5°/o on last year1£15.8kl.

These financial statements have been prepared in compliance with FRS 102, 'The Financial
Reponing sianaaro applicable in Ihe UK and Ihe Republic of Irelan¢J', Ihe Slatemenl of
Recommended Practice applicable lo charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the
Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Flepublic of Ireland IFRS 102) (Charities
SORP IFFIS 102)) and the Charities and Trustee Inveslmenl IScotland} Act 2005 and the Charily
Accounts Iscotlandl Regulations 2006 las amended).
Accounting policles
Basis of preparallon
The financial stalements have been prepared on the historical cost basis, as modified by the
revaluation of certain financial assets and liabilities and investment properties measured at fair
value through income or expenditure.
The financial slatemenls are prepared in slerling, which is the funclional currency ol the enlily.
Golng concern
There are no material uncertainties aboul Ihe charity's ability lo continue.
Dlsclosure exemptions
The entity salisfies the crileria of being a qualifwng enlity as defined in FRS 102. As such.
advantage has been taken of Ihe following disclosure exemptions available under paragraph 1.12
of FRS 102:
(a) No cash Ilow statement has been presented for Ihe company.

Judgements and key sources of esllmatlon uncertainty
The preparation of the financial statemenls requires management to make judgements,
estimates and assumptions that affect the amounts reported. These estimates and judgements
are continually reviewed and are based on experience and other factors, including expectations ol
future events that are believed lo be reasonable under the circumstances.

Unreslricted funds are available for use ai the discretion of the trustees to further any of the
charilYs purposes.
Designated funds are unrestricted funds earmarked by the trustees for particular future projecl or
commitment.
Restricled funds are subjected to restrictions on their expenditure declared by the Oonor or
through the terms of an appeal, and lall into one of two sub-classes: reslricled income funds or
endowment funds.
Income
All income is included in Ihe statement of financial activities when entillement has passed to Ihe
charity, il is probable that the economic benefils associated with the Iransaction will flow lo the
charity and Ihe amount can be reliably measured. The following specific policies are applied to
particular categories of income..
income from donations or grants is recognised when there is evidence ol entitlement lo the
gift. receipt is probable and its amount can be measured reliably.
legacy income is recognised when receipt is probable and entitlement is established.
income from donated goods is measured al the fair value of the goods unless this is
impractical lo measure reliably, in which case the value is derived from the cost to the donor
or the estimated resale value. Donated facilities and services are recognised in the accounts
when received if the value can be reliably measured. No amounts are included for the
contribullon of general volunteers.
income from contracts for Ihe supply of services is recognised with the delivery of the
contracted service. This is classified as unrestricted funds unless there is a conlractual
requirement for it lo be spenl on a particular purpose and returned if unspent, in which case it
may be regarded as restricied.

Expenditure
Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis as a liability is incurred. Expenditure includes any
VAT which cannot be fully recovered, and is classified under headings of Ihe statement of
financial activities to which it relates:
expendilure on raising funds includes the costs of all fundraising activities. event5, non-
charitable trading aclivities. and the sale of donated goods.
expenditure on charitable activilies includes all costs incurred by a charity in undertaking
activities that further its charitable aims for Ihe benefit of ils beneficiaries, including ihose
support costs and costs relating io the governance of the charty apportioned lo charitable
activities.
other expenditure include5 all expenditure that is neilher related to raising funds for Ihe
charity nor part of ils expenditure on charilable aclivities.
All costs are allocated lo expenditure categories reflecting ihe use ol the resource. Direct costs
altributable lo a single activity are allocated directly io that aclivity. Shared costs are apportioned
between the activities they conlribute to on a reasonable, justifiable and consislenl basis.
Operating leases
Lease payments are recognised as an expense over the lease term on a straight-line basis. The
aggregate benefit of lease incentives is recognised as a reduction to expense over the lease
term, on a slraight-line basis.
Tangible asseis
Tangible assets are initially recorded at cost, and subsequently slated at cost less any
accumulated depreciation and impairmenl losses. Any tangible assets carried at revalued
amounts are recorded at the fair value al the dale of revaluation less any subsequent
accumulated depreciation and subsequenl accumulaled impairmenl losses.
An increase in the carrying amount of an asset as a result of a revaluation, is recognised in other
recognised gains and losses, unless it reverses a charge for impairment Ihal has previously been
recognised as expenditure within the slatement of financial activities. A decrease in the carrying
amount ol an asset as a result ol revaluation, is recognised in other recognised gains and losses,
except lo wliiGh il offsets any previous revaluaiion gain, in which case the loss is shown within
other recognised gains and losses on the statement of financial activities.
Depreciatlon
Depreciation is calculated so as to write off thc cost or valuation of an asset, less ils iesidual
value, over the useful economic life of that asset as follows:

Impalrment of fixed assets
A review for indicators ol impairmenl is carried oul at each reporting date, with the recoverable
amount being eslimaied where such indicators exist. Where the carrwng value exceeds the
recoverable amount, the assel is impaired accordingly. Prior impairments are also reviewed for
possible reversal at each reporting date.
For the purposes ol impairmenl testing, when tl is nol possible to estimate the recoverable
amounl of an individual asset. an estimate is made of Ihe recoverable amount of the cash-
generating unit to which the asset belongs. The cash-generaling unit is Ihe smallest identifiable
group of assets that includes the asset and generates cash inllows that largely independenl of the
cash inflows from other assels or groups of assels.
For impairment testing of goodwill, the goodwi51 acquired in a business combination is. from the
acquisition dale, allocated to each ol the cash-generating units that are expected to benefit from
the synergies ol the combinalion, irrespective of whether Other assets or liabilities of the charity
are assigned to those units.
Flnanclal Instruments
A financial asset or a financial liability is recognised only when Ihe charity becomes a party to the
contractual provisions ol the instrument.
Basic financial inslrurnenls are inilially recognised at the amount receivable or payable including
any relaled transaction costs.
Current assels and current liabilities are subsequenlly measured al the cash or other
consideration expected to be paid or received and not discounled.
Debt instruments are subsequently measured al amortised cost.
Where investments in shares are publicly traded or their fair value can otherwise be measured
reliably, the inveslmenl is subsequently measured at lair value with changes in fair value
reeognised in income and expenditure. All other such investments are subsequently measured al
cost less impairment.
Other financial instruments, including derivatives, are initially recognised at fair value, unless
payment for an asset is deferred beyond normal business terms or financed at a rale ot inlerest
that is not a market rate. in which case the assol is rnoasured at the proscnl value of the lulure
payments discounted at a market rate of interest for a similar debt instrument.
Other financial instruments are subsequenlly measured at fair value, wilh any changes
recognised in the statement of financial activities. with the exception ol hedging instruments in a
designated hedging relationship.
Financial assets that are measured al cost or amortised cost are reviewed for objeclive evidence
of impairment at the end of each reporting date. If Ihere is objeclive evidence of impairrnent, an
impairment loss is recognised under the appropriate heading in the statement of financial
aclivilies in which the initial gain was recognised.

For all equity instrLtmenls regardless of significance, and other linancial assels Ihat are
individually significant, Ihese are assessed individually for impairmenl. Other linancial assets are
eilher assessed individually or grouped on Ihe basis ol similar credit risk characleristics.
Any reversals of impairment are recognised immediately, lo the exlenl Ihat the reversal does not
resull in a carrying amounl of the financial asset that exceeds whal Ihe carrying amounl would
have been had the impairment not previously been recognised.
Defined contribution plans
Contributions to defined Gonlribulion plans are recogni5ed a5 an expense in Ihe period in which
the related service is provided. Prepaid contributions are recognised as an assel to tha extent
that the prepayment will lead to a reduction in future payments or a cash refund.
When contributions are not expected to be settled wholly wthin 12 months of Ihe end of the
reporting date in which Ihe employees render the related service. the liability is measured on a
discounted present value basis. The unwinding of the discounl is recognised as an expense in
the period in which it arises.
