It was registered in its current legal form on 8[th] November 2019. The charity was previously a constituted group but changed its legal form to a SCIO. The assets of the unincorporated association were transferred to the SCIO on the 8[th] November 2019. It has a single tier structure and as such the trustees are the members of the charity. ## **Appointment of trustees** The management committee, which normally meets once per month, are the charity’s trustees. Membership of the management committee is open to all teachers of the Douglas Ewart High School, community members, parents and young people participating in the award. Trustees are elected at the annual general meeting which is held in July. There must be a minimum of three and a maximum of eight trustees. PUBLIC PUBLIC ## **Objectives and Activities Charitable Purposes** 1. **The advancement of education.** - _The advancement of education through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award locally and opportunities for outdoor learning_ 2. **The advancement of citizenship or community development.** - _The advancement of citizenship or community development including the pooling of resources such as equipment, staffing and facilities; this may include the sharing of instructors and assessors, the joining together of groups for activities and for national, regional or county events. To establish, or assist with, any special project to develop outdoor learning experiences and residentials in targeted areas or communities._ 3. **The provision of recreational facilities, or the organisation of recreational activities.** - _The provision of recreational facilities, or the organisation of recreational activities with the object of improving the conditions of life for the persons whom the facilities or activities are primarily intended._ ## **Activities** Cairnsmore Award Group offers young people aged 14 – 24 years the opportunity to take part in a DofE programme at one of three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, leads to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Our award groups create a safe space for young people to meet new friends, discover new interests and talents, and develop essential skills for life and work. The accreditation is a recognised mark of achievement, respected by colleges, universities and employers. The award group runs afterschool in the Douglas Ewart High School every Thursday and groups at all levels meet weekly to receive support with completing each of their sections (physical, volunteering, skill and expedition). Between March and October each year, we support young people to plan and lead an expedition, discovering local wild country. The volunteering, skill and physical section are selected by the young people, and the level of commitment increases through each level of the award. Volunteering is simple. It’s about choosing to give time to help people, the community or society, the environment or animals. Through Cairnsmore, we have young people volunteering in charity shops, in schools, sports coaching, helping in animal rescue centres, fundraising and much more. For the physical section, young people choose any sport, dance or fitness activity – in short, anything that requires a sustained level of energy and physical activity. Examples of how young people are completing this is by participating in swimming clubs, football, horse riding, dance groups and much more. The skills section encourages young people to choose an activity that will allow them to prove they have broadened their understanding and increased expertise in their chosen skill. This includes digital media, photography, baking, caring for animals and gaming. We currently have 47 young people working towards their award at all 3 levels and will recruit new bronze participants in September. PUBLIC PUBLIC ## **Achievements and Performance** We are delighted to report that we have resumed face to face delivery of our services since the pandemic and have been able to deliver expeditions at all 3 levels. We are currently planning an international trip for the Gold level awards that will take place in October 2022. 30 young people have completed awards and were presented with their certificates at a presentation evening in January. We are about to recruit new participants and believe the level of demand will be significantly increased. ## **Financial Review** Our financial report for this year is limited, as we have been able to secure free places for young people participating in the award. There has been no expenditure over the last reporting year, and income of fees and bank interest equating to £400.24p ## **Reserves Policy** Our group does not have any ongoing running costs at present. The trustees’ aim to keep a minimum balance of £500 in the account to cover the costs of replacing equipment etc should it be required. ## **Plans for Future Period** When compiling this report, we are reconsidering the sustainability of acquiring a facility when there is still uncertainty around following the pandemic. However, we are pleased that we have been able to maintain contact with our members and resume face to face services for young people. ## **Declaration** The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report above.
