## Aims: 

The aims of the Re-Green Project are to work with communities along a stretch of the Zambezi River in Zambia, primarily between the towns of Chirundu and Chiawa, to provide fruit orchards and tree nurseries at four sites. The produce of the orchards should be used by the schools and their communities as the see fit, and the nurseries should provide saplings for replanting denuded areas of woodland at no cost to those wishing to plant them. 

## Activities to date: 

The orchard at Gota-Gota school remains semi-complete with around 20 trees in a fenced area. Some citrus trees were lost during a borehole failure and replaced with the hardier Java plum. A sheltered, ‘potting’ area is in place. 

Our main contact at Gota Gota, the Deputy Headteacher Mr Moffat Mwita, has been transferred to a new school, and at the time of writing, we are waiting for him to forward the contact details of his replacement. 

Fundraising remains the biggest barrier to furthering the project. The Chair, Bruce Crichton, has had discussions with a Tayside-based Charity, ‘Tayside Woodland Partnerships’ to discuss the possibility of a ‘Twinning’ program. The aim would be to ‘Twin’ individual trees or clusters, having one on Tayside and one in Zambia. Trees would be almost exclusively newly planted, rather than twinning mature trees. We feel that this might be a useful way of increasing awareness and attracting funds as people are more likely to donate if they can see tangible results locally, rather than giving to a charity whose work they may never see. 

Crucially, The Re-Green Project will not carry out or fund planting in Tayside, nor will TWP fund planting in Zambia as this would clash with the stated aims in both constitutions. The organisations will discuss the best approach to funding over the coming months. Candidates for the Twinning scheme include schools and churches. I have contacted the local High School in Blairgowrie to gauge their level of interest and am awaiting a formal reply although the initial verbal discussions were very positive. The Blairgowrie Highschool tree, twinned with a Gota Gota tree will 



hopefully be the pilot for a larger scheme involving more schools, churches and community groups in Tayside, drawing on the reach of Tayside woodland Partnerships to fund the aims of The Re-Green Project.
