## **Achievements and performance**

|**Summary of the main achievements**<br>**of the charity during the financial**<br>**period**|Since the receipt of the valued engineered Project Viability Report where<br>the project was deemed unviable at this time, the Trust are still of the<br>opinion that efforts to develop the Mill should still remain on hold.<br>The trustees, however, remain committed to the project and should<br>economic circumstances improve, or we secure funding from other<br>sources, including private investors, we will revisit the development at a<br>later date. In the meantime, the Trust will continue to operate to raise<br>awareness of the project and history of the area.<br>The Restricted funds received last year from North Ayrshire Council via<br>the Arts and Culture Participatory Budgeting fund (£400) were to raise<br>the profile of the mill's history following our successful "Grow the Mill"<br>application. This project was to encourage local people in the Garnock<br>Valley and surrounding area to grow a patch of flax and once again<br>produce linen thread in the Garnock Valley (which was the original<br>purpose of the Stoneyholm Mill). We distributed seeds in the community<br>and delivered presentations at local primary schools and the Kilbirnie<br>library. £20.94 of expenses were paid in this financial year (for compost)<br>and a further £150 to That.co for their support in delivering the<br>presentation to the schools and library. However, a further invoice for<br>£150 from That.co was received in Nov 2023 for additional presentations<br>to primary schools and the library, but payment was not made as this<br>invoice was overlooked as was thought to be a duplicate. This was<br>discovered when performing the annual accounts and payment has<br>subsequently been made but will show in next year's accounts.<br>Therefore £222.08 is currently noted as restricted funds but £150 of this<br>has been spent. More expenditure of the remaining Restricted Funds<br>(£72.08) will occur in the 2024-25 financial year.|

The remaining £222.08 in the bank account at<br>year end is restricted funds received from NAC Arts & Culture PB<br>following successful application for a grant to fund the ‘Grow the Mill’<br>project. More expenditure of the Restricted Funds will occur in the 2024-<br>25 financial year.|
|---|---|
||The overall deficit of £272.44 is due to us receiving £400 Arts and<br>Culture Participatory Budgeting funding for the "Grow the Mill" project in<br>April 2023 (the previous financial year). Of this there is £222.08<br>remaining in Restricted Funds allocated to this flax growing project. ## **Stoneyholm Mill Trust Chair Report**

## **12 November 2024**

As reported last year we are currently unable to move the project forward in terms of developing the mill. Should economic circumstances alter in future years though, we are still committed to our aim of creating a space which will benefit the local community.

Our focus remains in the meantime on community engagement.

## **Grow the Mill**

In collaboration with of THAT History Co and having secured £400 from NAC Participatory Budgeting Arts and Culture Funding, we distributed flax seeds to the local community and schools and encouraged those interested to grow seeds and share photos of the plants as they were growing.

Once harvested, around Septembe osted demonstration sessions in various North Ayrshire schools and a community event in Kilbirnie’s library on how to use the plant and make it in to twine.

own company has developed a mills tour which features Stoneyholm mill (amongst others in the area).

## **Knox the Fox**

Our ‘Knox the Fox’ book continues to be well received and we are now on to our second print run. We have copies available to purchase at various local outlets.

## **AGM 2023**

We held our AGM on 9 November - virtually. (Chair), (Secretary) and (Treasurer) all offered to continue in their roles and all trustees agreed. All other trustees agreed to remain part of the group.

## **W&J Knox**

oint of contact (in liaison with our trustee and former W&J Knox owner We remain committed to engaging with the current owners of the mill, Selstad, should either they or the trust have any proposals to bring to the table.

## **Thanks**

I would like to thank all the trustees for their continued support and contribution to the trust.

It’s been challenging year personally for some of our trustees and it’s greatly appreciated that everyone is still committed to continuing the journey in the hope that we can at some point achieve our long term aim of developing the mill. Our monthly meetings (which we now run virtually) continue to be very well attended as well as our occasional curry evenings!

Particular thanks as always to our 2 offices bearers - our secretary for her time and commitment in keeping everything ticking over and keeping me on track and or his time and commitment to the role of Treasurer which he continues to carry out with great diligence on our behalf.

Thanks also to North Ayrshire Council for their financial support.

Finally, thanks to W&J Knox, and their former chairman and our trustee for continued commitment to the project and ongoing support.

## **Notes to the Accounts**

## **1. Project Viability Report**

No works in relation to the project viability report were undertaken during this period. Efforts were continued to concentrate on community events to raise the profile of the Trust and history of the mill.

## **2. Fundraising**

Fundraising this year has been through the selling of a children's book to help raise awareness of the mill and provide a revenue stream for the Trust.

## **3. Funding & Support**

The Restricted funds received last year from North Ayrshire Council via the Arts and Culture Participatory Budgeting fund (£400) were to raise the profile of the mill's history following our successful "Grow the Mill" application. This project was to encourage local people in the Garnock Valley and surrounding area to grow a patch of flax and once again produce linen thread in the Garnock Valley (which was the original purpose of the Stoneyholm Mill). We distributed seeds in the community and delivered presentations at local primary schools and the Kilbirnie library. £20.94 of expenses were paid in this financial year (for compost) and a further £150 to That.co for their support in delivering the presentation to the schools and library. However, a further invoice for £150 from That.co was received in Nov 2023 for additional presentations to primary schools and the library, but payment was not made as this invoice was overlooked as was thought to be a duplicate. This was discovered when performing the annual accounts and payment has subsequently been made but will show in next year's accounts. Therefore £222.08 is currently noted as restricted funds but £150 of this has been spent. More expenditure of the remaining Restricted Funds (£72.08) will occur in the 2024-25 financial year.

We continued to sell our "Knox the Fox" books to generate unrestricted funds. The book created a story around a character, 'Knox the Fox', which developed and added to the artwork, by talented local artist lready created for previous events. We published the book with a first run of 200 copies, sold 199 and proceeded with a second print run of 200 copies in the previous financial year. Revenue from books sold to date, including donations, totals £1,640.23 (£56 pounds in 2023/24 financial year). We have 194 copies still to sell at local community events and fayres. If all books sell this would be an additional £1,356.06 of revenue for the Trust.

The Trust is grateful to North Ayrshire Council for their continued backing through restricted funding via successful grant applications.

## **4. Balance Deficit Commentary**

The overall deficit of £272.44 is due to us receiving £400 Arts and Culture Participatory Budgeting funding for the "Grow the Mill" project in April 2023 (the previous financial year). Of this there is £222.08 remaining in Restricted Funds allocated to this flax growing project. The unrestricted funds have a deficit of £101.50 and a balance of £688.90 due to income from book sales not exceeding outgoing costs for independent examination of annual accounts.
