DUNASKIN DOON BAND TRUSTEE’S REPORT 2025
Another year has flown by! Our 2024 AGM was held on 29[th] April with a supportive turnout from the band. It’s been a busy and rewarding year, filled with well attended rehearsals, performances, and plenty of laughs. We’ve continued to grow both musically and as a banding family.
As mentioned earlier, it’s been a busy year for the band. However, we’ve not had quite as much success on the contest front since our last AGM. Due to player availability, we only managed to compete in three contests:
-
West of Scotland Entertainment Contest (August) – 9th place
-
Scottish Challenge (November) – 7th place
-
Scottish Championships (March) – 8th place
The Scottish results mean we’ll need to put in a lot of hard work between now and the 2026 Scottish Championships to avoid relegation to the 2nd section. While we were a bit disappointed with the results, band morale remains strong, and we find ourselves in a positive place moving forward.
A huge thank you goes to Ralph Brill for his leadership, exceptional musicianship, and commitment to the band. made the difficult decision to step down, feeling he couldn’t take the band in the direction we were aiming for. While we were sad to see him go, we’re incredibly grateful for his time with us and wish him all the very best in his new role as Associate Conductor with Dalmellington Band.
We were delighted when expressed strong interest in returning to conduct the band. After advertising the position, the committee unanimously agreed to welcome him back. The rehearsals we’ve had through May and June have already lifted the band to a new level, and I’m genuinely excited about the direction we’re heading. Our first contest with Chris will be the West of Scotland Entertainment, and we’re sure you’ll all agree that the programme is already sounding fantastic! However, we need strong attendance throughout August to really polish it up and get everything stage-ready. So please make every effort to attend rehearsals. If you’re unable to make it, remember to update the spreadsheet on the board, and if it’s a last-minute absence, just drop Marion a quick message to let her know.
Alongside contesting, the band took on a packed calendar of concerts and engagements, which are vital for raising funds. These included:
Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities, many church services, our Summer and Xmas concerts, the South Ayrshire Volunteer Awards, the Doon Valley Open Day, the VE Day 80th Anniversary, numerous Christmas busking gigs and several gala days, holy fairs, and marches. Many of these were within our local area, helping to raise the band’s profile in the community — something that’s particularly important for our CAT transfer.
On that front, the committee continues to work hard to secure the band’s future in this building. As you’ll know, we submitted an application for the Community Asset Transfer and made an offer for the building — unfortunately, this was rejected. There’s a lot to consider with a purchase like this, and we know we’ll need to raise a significant amount of money through extra engagements, grant applications, Gift Aid and a JustGiving campaign to strengthen our next offer to the council.
Thankfully, we’ve been granted an extension on our lease until the end of July 2026, which gives us some breathing space — but also means the coming year will be a crucial one for fundraising.
We really hope everyone can get involved wherever possible, so the responsibility doesn’t fall solely on the committee. It’s going to take a group effort to make this happen, but we’re confident that, together, we can do it. One of the biggest priorities ahead of us is to establish a junior band. Several contacts within the council have indicated that setting up a youth section would be a key step in securing our long-term future in the band hall. Some of us have gone through PVG checks to allow this to happen.
Regarding concerts, we haven’t yet held our annual concert this year. As discussed at last year’s AGM, we’re considering a change in format, and we’re really keen to explore alternative ways to continue raising funds in Joan’s memory. We’re also planning a concert in collaboration with the Aeolian Male Choir, which promises to be a fantastic event and a great fundraising opportunity for the band.
Our annual awards were issued again at the Xmas concert with huge congratulations to the following:-
The Joan Price Section Award – Bass section The Jim Guthrie Cup for Player of the Year – The Alex McCutcheon Award for Most Improved Player – The John Robertson Trophy for Bandsman of the Year –
Over the past year, we’ve seen a few comings and goings within the band. We were delighted to welcome into the fold. A special mention goes to Robert for winning the open section of the Scottish Solo and ensemble championship. On the other hand, we said goodbye to
As always, one of the strengths of our band is that we rarely need to rely on guest players — the band that rehearses together in the hall is the same band that steps onto the contest stage. That consistency is something to be proud of, and it puts us in a really strong position moving forward.
decisions to support the band’s progress. We kindly ask that members respect and support these decisions, and avoid approaching individual office bearers for explanations or discussions about them.
We all have full-time jobs, and a lot of time is spent behind the scenes on communication, meetings, and general organisation. As such, individual committee members may not have the capacity to respond to separate queries. If you have any questions, please direct them to the chairperson, and you will get an honest response.
Please know that no decision is made lightly. The committee will work closely with Chris to ensure what’s best for the band as a whole.
We pride ourselves on being a friendly, welcoming, and family-oriented band — not competitive or cutthroat like some others. But from time to time, decisions do have to be made to help the band reach its full potential. Thank you to the current committee, we work really well together and hope this continues in the next year of banding.
President Gus’s 80th birthday. We hope you had a fantastic day, despite the surprise balloon display on your gate!
Gus, we can’t thank you enough for your unwavering support of Dunaskin — from opening the hall early to get the heating on, to cleaning, tidying, and your constant presence at rehearsals, engagements, and contests. Your dedication means the world to us, and we all love you to bits, Mr. Cochrane.
We really do have a lot to celebrate – Mon the Bon!
