Objectives and activities
The Charity was set up as a direct result some years before, when of one of the trustees saw first - hand how poverty can impact an individual. The trustee was selling at a car boot sale and an older person was struggling financially to purchase a coat even at a very reasonable price. The trustee got chatting to the individual and it transpired that there was significant hardship. The person’s shoes were also completely unserviceable. The trustee immediately knew she could help and that day gave away some of her items to the person and at that point the idea for Coats n Quilts was conceived as she knew many others would be in the same situation.
The organisation’s purposes are:
-
The relief of those in need by reason of age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage, and in furtherance of this;
-
Coats and Quilts is Primarily but not exclusively for pensioners 55yrs + to help provide warmth to the pensioners in need by giving coats and quilts then to help signpost the vulnerable pensioners to other organisations for any other help and support they may need.
-
In giving of the coats n quilts this may help them to keep warm and cut down the winter illness they get with lack of heat and warmth this may also cut down visits to GP, hospital etc
-
Coats n Quilts will supply coats, scarves, hats, gloves and shawls as well as new quilts by means of a referral system. All coats are steam cleaned before distribution to the client
The ‘giving of coats’ can be viewed as a campaign that aims to highlight the poverty that many of Coats n Quilts service users face. This enables Coats n Quilts to engage directly with this sometimes hard to reach or forgotten group. During this interaction we aim to get to know them better in the hope that they will ‘drop into” the conversation that actually they do need advice and support in areas such as access to benefits, housing concerns, health, isolation etc. Coats n Quilts can then signpost to the relevant agency – benefits; housing; health; isolation etc

Trustee recruitment and appointment
During 2020/2021, towards the end of the financial year, CNQ recruited 4 new trustees – names as above in lines 2 - 5
Achievements and performance
Unfortunately, there is little to report this year.
When the first lockdown was advised on March 23[rd] 2020, older people were being told to shield and therefore had no reason to be leaving their homes.
Additionally, the referring agents from local third sector organisations were either furloughed or working from home. They were unable to do their usual house calls and this resulted in the CNQ provision being essentially halted throughout the entire financial year.
The coats which were donated pre-pandemic remained in storage and CNQ did not request donations of additional coats for infection control reasons.
One lockdown followed another throughout the year so this operational down-time was used to progress with recruitment of additional trustees, as above. The late running AGM of 2019 – 2020 took place on 03 March 2021 and the trustees were welcomed to the charity.
One key success was that CNQ received a donation from Dundee Rotary Club enabling CNQ to purchase a new and modern steam machine which can steam 3 coats in 25 minutes
Volunteering:
There are presently no additional volunteers out with the committee

Independent Examiners Report to the Trustees of Coats n Quilts SCIO, Scottish Charity SC049287
I report on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31st May 2021, which are set out on the accompanying pages.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Account Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent Examiner’s statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.
Independent examiner’s statement
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
To keep accounting records in accordance with section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and
To prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
have not been met, or
to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
