## **Trustees' Annual Report**

The trustees present their Report and Accounts for the Year Ended 30 April 2023

## **Structure, Governance and Management**

## _Constitution_

The Charity is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (a SCIO). It was registered in its current legal form on 25 April 2019 with the Office of the Scottish charity Regulator (OSCR)

## _Appointment of Trustees_

The initial members of the board were the individuals who signed the charity trustee declaration forms to form the charity.

Trustees are elected at the annual general meeting which is held in April, any member may be elected to be a charity trustee. There must be a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 10 trustees.

## _Key Management Remuneration_

The charity is managed by its trustees who work on a voluntary basis and receive no salary or remuneration. Since September 2021, the charity employs one full time member of staff who oversees the running and organisation of events, volunteer training and funding.

## **Objectives and Activities**

## _Charitable Activities_

1. To Inspire Children’s Digital Learning

2. Reach pupils aged 5-18 to let them start their digital design thinking

3. Enable pupils and teachers with the resources and skills required to take an acƟve part in creaƟng inspiring digital solutions

## _Our Core Mission_

Recognising the need for an increased number of children to participate in STEM related subjects in schools, Make It Happen Club is proactively addressing this need by creating inspiring digital activities for children and empowering educators and parents to guide our young people to become digital creators.

Our primary initiatives centre around our original mobile app design competition, which we initially piloted in 2018 in four primary schools. In just three months, we reached over 2000 children, we are now working with over 15,000 pupils each year. In this competition, we invite children to “Think It, Design It, Build It”. Pupils are challenged to think of an app idea that will solve a problem or entertain someone, sketch it on our low-tech paper entry forms, and enter our competitions. We will then collaborate with our expert engineers to bring the winning idea to life within each school. We use this exciting, low tech, large scale engagement approach initially with schools to engage many young minds at once but the ingenuity and creativity shown in the ideas is inspiring. Subsequently, we provide teachers with various resources to deliver diverse digital skills and all resources are aligned to Curriculum for Excellence.

In 2021, we expanded upon our app design competition format to further engage young minds at the next stage of their educational journey. Our Make It Happen High Program is specifically designed for S1/S2 pupils in the Broad General Education stage. It represents a natural progression from our original competition, allowing students not only to conceive an app but also to witness their idea evolve through the entire app development cycle (from app design to app development, testing, and ultimately app launch).

At Make It Happen, our overarching mission is to provide all students with the opportunity to explore a diverse range of digital learning experiences. Throughout 2022-2023, we have curated a series of workshops tailored to different ages and interests, encompassing activities such as Stop Motion animation, Code Along Sessions, and more. These workshops can be customised to accommodate varying age groups, specific needs, and the available resources of schools and community groups.

## **Achievements and Performance**

Children and staff always excited whenever MIH visit. Always informative, engaging and purposeful. Thank you for your coding and micro:bit sessions. Pupils have now shared their learning to to the Digital Leaders from P4-6 on what they learnt. They will continue to develop this in coding club and training teachers on these skills. The session was very well paced and demonstrated and explained each step thoroughly. All children were supported throughout. The children loved sending messages through the Microbit. It was a great help to me to see this in action before carrying out Microbit lessons myself! An excellent session for the children and myself. I know feel more confident to deliver this in class. The kids were engaged throughout and really enjoyed working with . They can't wait to use Scratch again. Thank you so much for a fantastic 5 weeks of coding groups! The course was flexible, varied and fun, challenging and supporting each individual learner as well as encouraging collaboration and celebration of one another. Will definitely be recommending to others to get in touch! We're already looking forward to working with ye again in the future. Thanks again! 😊 Fantastic session that can be adapted for lots of different scenarios. Thank you once again for your input. We really value your contributions to our technology programme this year. The enthusiasm demonstrated by during the inputs was contagious and reflected in the response and attitude of the learners. **App Design Competition Feedback 2022-2023** Fantastic competitions, pupils thoroughly enjoyed it. Great communication. Blacklands Primary have loved being part of the make it happen competition. Our pupils have been inspired by Frances and her team because they have seen one of their peers have their idea brought to life. Our children loved the competition. was brilliant at getting the children engaged and excited about it. Would highly recommend to other schools This is an amazing opportunity for children. They get to see that anything is possible in terms of DYW. Our children have realised that they can learn more digital skills than they thought possible such as coding and designing apps. It has been very motivating and so good to have really knowledgeable people such as support the teachers as well as the children. We would be keen to use the charity every year as it has been an excellent opportunity for our children. Thank you

has been excellent. She is very prompt in her replies, great with the kids and really knowledgeable.

has been an absolutely brilliant support for our technology and STEM focus this year. Not only has she launched, judged and presented the pupil award, she has taught our staff about how to use Spheros. The fact that she has experience as a class teacher means that she is able to use her knowledge to adapt to different audiences. We will most definitely participate in the Make it Happen competition next year and I have already shared the concept with a number of neighbouring schools as it has been such a valuable process. Thank you!

The whole experience was fantastic for the children at our school! Frances was brilliant with the children. She was really flexible and did workshops at P3-P7 as requested. The children were so engaged and loved seeing examples of other winning apps from other schools as inspiration. Being able to access the winning app on the Make it Happen website has been great for each class to go in and have a look at it in more detail. If there are any CLPL opportunities for staff or if there were any opportunities to have coding workshops with the children, we would be very keen! Coding is a priority in our school improvement plan this year so we would really appreciate any help for staff and children as it is a new initiative in our school. What a fantastic charity! Thank you so much. 😄

is fabulous this is a wonderful initiative that supports our child and the can see an opportunity for success. It gives them work experience and it develops positive role models.

We loved having Frances at the school working with some of our ASN pupils. Can't wait to work together in the future . Thank you !

Thank you so much to Frances for her enthusiastic and engaging approach towards the competition, in both inputs and return assembly.

**Make it Happen Club (SCIO) Report and Accounts for the Year Ended 30 April 2023**

## **Trustees' Annual Report**

## **Financial Review**

## _Principal Funding Sources_

Our main source of funding is sponsorship. We currently still have one platinum sponsor, JPMorgan who have provided another European sponsorship deal and included a clause to engage the charity in US schools. Our Sponsorship for the coming year is 35k. The sponsorship enables us to maintain our unwavering focus on engaging with and educating students and teachers within the schools, and for this, we are genuinely thankful. This funding empowers us to offer tangible and thrilling incentives to the various student communities we interact with. We prioritise prizes that facilitate ongoing digital learning, including Amazon Fire Tablets, coding books, and educational devices such as Sphero Minis or Coding Critters.

We take great pride in bestowing prestigious certificates as a tangible symbol of recognition for these inspiring ideas. These certificates, alongside the exciting prizes, are presented during our celebratory events at the conclusion of each competition. Together, they serve as the bedrock of our mission, dedicated to celebrating achievement and nurturing creativity in the young minds we serve.

## _Financial Position & Reserves_

For the period ended 30th April 2023 the charity generated a net deficit of £18,891 (2022: surplus of £16,839). At Balance date reserves stood at £41,985 (2022: £59,976), with all of these being unrestricted.

It is the policy of the trustees to retain sufficient unrestricted reserves to cover all known liabilities and to provide for a degree of contingency to complete the charity's existing operations in an orderly manner in the event of an unforeseen reduction in income. At balance date unrestricted reserves stood at £41,985, therefore the trustees are satisfied this policy is being met. Funds held in excess of this will be reinvested in the development of the charity.

## **Future Plans**

Our future plans are filled with excitement and ambition as we aim to expand and enhance our App Design Competition across Scotland and beyond. While the competition will continue to thrive in schools across Scotland, we are now setting our sights on reaching schools in even more remote areas than already reached, including the beautiful Scottish islands. We are equally focused on firmly establishing our presence in England, Hong Kong, and America, making our competition a global phenomenon. This growth wouldn't be possible without the dedication of Sponsor and our volunteers in these regions and the active engagement of school staff. To further enrich digital learning experiences, we are dedicated to providing more opportunities for volunteers and schools to collaborate closely. We're also committed to forging stronger connections with local universities, teacher training programs, and computing science departments, emphasising the importance of digital education and creativity. Additionally, our Make It Happen High project, fully supported with online resources and videos, will continue to roll out in high schools, catering to entire year groups and nurturing innovation among students. Our journey ahead is marked by expansion, collaboration, and the commitment to empower the next generation in the world of digital creativity and education to ‘Make It Happen’.

The trustees declare that they have approved the report above.

Signed on behalf of the charity's trustees:
