11. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

What a lovely year it has been to be the chair for the charity. This has been my fourth year as chair and although it’s a definite challenge it gives me such joy to see the difference it makes to our school and humbled and the support which we receive.

I would like to thank the wider community of our school, to the parents/carers, families and friends of our pupils who support us and our fundraising efforts by any means they can. Also, to the wonderful committee members who give so freely of their time to help raise these vital funds which enhance the lives of all our pupils and their families. We would not be able to make our events so successful or help financially support the school without you, so thank you to each and every one of you.

We were able to host 2 events in school this year, the Family BBQ fun day x 2 and also the Christmas fayre both events very well attended and supported by our school community.

Due to the support received we were able again this year to help fund the seniors trip to Bendrigg. This years group had a great time and enjoyed lots of new experiences.

The parent council at the school also asked for our support to run some activities in the school over the summer holidays for our pupils. The pupils and their families were able to enjoy Dancing, Yoga, Music Therapy and swimming all with our support. These activities make such a difference to our pupils many of whom would not have access to these activities otherwise. The swimming especially as the pool in school is the only one in Aberdeen with the changing and pool access hoisting equipment making it the only way many of our pupils can access the pool.

Thank you all once again for your continued support and for enabling Friends of Orchard Brae to support the Orchard Brae School community.

Lisa Simons Chair

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

The objectives of the Charity are to enhance and advance the educational environment of the pupils of the school.

The main activities in relation to these objectives are:

Foster relationships between parents/carers, staff, and the whole Orchard Brae community/others associated with the school (including the local community).

Raise funds to enrich the opportunities for the children and young people by organising fundraising and social activities.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

The governing document is the Constitution for the Friends of Orchard Brae.

TRUSTEE RECRUITMENT AND APPOINTMENT

Membership of the Charity shall be open to persons 18 years of age and over wishing to offer appropriate support or help to the school and who are accepted by the Committee.

Candidates seeking to be elected as Trustees shall be proposed and seconded in writing, and nominations shall be in the hands of the Secretary not less than fourteen days before the Annual General Meeting. The proposer shall ascertain that the nominee would accept office if elected.

Trustees are appointed at the Annual General Meeting, shall hold office until the following Annual General Meeting and shall be eligible for re-election.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

We are passionate and committed to supporting the inclusive educational vision of Orchard Brae School. Our main aim is to ensure our pupils are an integral part of our local and wider community. Our main objective is to raise funds to help pay for specialist services and equipment and to fund the running and maintenance of the school minibuses, enabling classes to access the local and wider community.

In June 2025 we held a Family BBQ Fun Day, it was a lovely day and a great opportunity for the school as a community to come together and have some fun.

In December 2024 we held our Christmas Fayre, was great to have so many external stalls coming and being supported at our school, many of the stall holders commented on having had a great time and asked to come back next year.

These events helped to raise essential funds for the school. We were also lucky to be one of the chosen charities for the Aberdeen Student Show. Some of these funds will be used to pay for the running and maintenance costs associated to the school minibuses. The funds from Aberdeen Student Show will be used for the new Sensory Room at Ashgrove.

The minibuses are vital to our pupils as they provide a safe and secure transport link, where they can travel together as a class to local amenities and access the local and wider community to partake in activities and services for outdoor learning, life skills training and accessing ASN sporting and community events and competitions across the city. One of the buses was removed due to becoming unfixable, we helped school by hiring a minibus for the later part of the year and are fundraising for a new bus.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Friends of Orchard Brae is entirely autonomous and is responsible for securing its own funding from donations and fundraising sources in order to meet its liabilities. As all Friends of Orchard Brae Trustees are volunteers, the funding received is used to provide for the additional services and equipment necessary for the continued education of the children, young people and their families. This will include the maintenance of the fleet of mini buses which enables the Orchard Brae Community to access facilities across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire and extended learning opportunities out-with the classroom.

The current level of general reserves is £39521 representing circa 25 months of unrestricted expenditure and an increase of £4353 from the £35168 reported at the end of the previous period.

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance
with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the
Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity trustees
consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations
does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section
44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent
examiner’s statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts
Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the
charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes
consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks
explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken
do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do
not express an audit opinion on the viewgiven bythe accounts.
Independent examiner’s In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention [other than that
statement disclosed on the attached page*]

which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the
requirements:

to keep accounting records in accordance with section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and
Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and

to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with
Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
