We are led by Malawian NGO STEKA (Step KldsAwaienes51 run bywomenlchildren's rights campaigners Helen and Godknows Maseko. STEKA Is a home where IO0+ trauma and poverty-experienced childrenlyounB adults find alternative family and stability. STEKAskills fundraises and contributes expertise to extend STEKA'S impact beyond the home to marginali5ed young people & adults living in Rural Blantyre so more poverty & trauma experienced Malawians empower themselves by developing the vocational ski115, confidence, & agerbty needed to challenge structural inequallties lincludlng estsb115h small bu5ine55e5 to work their way out of poverty). We find a STEKA Centfe lor Vocational Skills and Community Enlerprlse1SCIVSCEI comprising of 3 vocational skills teaching blocks, kltchen. agricultural farm and, soon, a women's hostel and nursery on it5 CarnPUS. In Scotland, we build solidarity by challengin8 aid framed narratlvès of the Global majority and engage communltles through events, workshops, presentations and, short filrns where povprty experienced Malawians speak for themselves demonstratlng their own reslllence, ambition and focus. We have co-prodsJced award-wlnnlng Dialogue Groups as an alternative to voluntourlsm In Malawl whereby tourlsts pay for workshops run by 3 5TEKA team instead ot doin8 jobs onthek bphalf.

We sent £25,909 as direct donations to STEKA Malawi, plus over £3000 in purchase of goods with Malawian suppliers. STEKA used our money to.. Complete the infrastructure needed to bring maSn5 electri¢ity onto the STEKA Vocational Skills Centre campus with the 5UPPQrt of the Elliot Foundation. This has had a huge impact- not just by enaL71ing learners to use machinery all day but also enabling u5 to introduce cleaneT and more envlronmentallv frlendly cooklng facllltles Into Clare's Kltchen (electric ovens Instead of burnin8 tharcoall. Women livlng In our temporary hostel can use electric cooking facilitie5 Ifl the evening too. This supplements our solar power which klcks in during power cuts. An excellent spin off is that the local football 8round now also has158hts whlch can be seen in drone footage filmed after installation. And lotal farmers who travel far from home can charge their phones at the Centre and remaln eonnected to their families. The electricity project has been a major challenge however and credit must be given to Godknows Maseko, who successfully ne8Otiated diffitult meetings with communlties and chiefs over permlssions and planning to build the 950m long system. Design and build a Rotary I Watson'5 nursery which can accommodate disabled children often excluded from education in the lotal area as well as the children of the women who study at our Centre. Complete'clarè's kitchen, building and electric cooking facllities a place where food can be cooked for learners. residents of the women's h05tel and food and other iterns sold to the local community. This investment Isn't just about earning an income for STEKAski115, It 15 also about creating jobs which improve people's Ilves. As Kira, one of our tailors, says.. "Your orders are so important to me and my family. When you pay for bags and hats to be made, that money becomes school fees for my 515ter and helps bring food on our table. Youf Orders don't just buy product- they help me build a home, and a rnorè Sndependent future for us.
STEKAskills We ran paid-for Dialogue Group5 for 5 visitlng Scottish youth I school groups, challenging the donor-dependencv model that is famlllar to people in the UK and doveloplng a deep understanding of Global Citlzenship for everyone taklng part. Following the advlce of larger charities whlch are part of the Scotland Malawi Partnership, we are also maklng our rnoney go a lot further in Malawi thTovgh use of alternative sourtes for money transfer. Thi5 enables us to keep funds in Sterling as long as posslble and only transfer money at the point it is needed land thus avoid the full impact of currency devaluations). We also get a belter e¥chan8e Tate. Communlty Outreach See the appendix to the chair's report for details of the wlde range of community outreach actlvities our trustees have been involved in. A few of these are summarised below.. Helen Maseko completed a qualification as a Trainer of Trainers in Gendèr Based Vlolence and Mental Health Programmlng for women and girls. Helen travelled widely in Central Malawi training In these areas but also teachlng women how to make lertiliser. soap, ltstion and tree plantlng to earn an Independent Incvme. Godknows Maseko is on the board o15eveTal organisations aimed at child£are and education. H15 community outreach activities have focussed on worklng wlth the communlty about the advantage of taking dlsabled children to h05pitsls and to school,. the disadvantage of initiation ceremonies both girls and boys; men having to understand the role of women as more than a housewife and girls havlng voice, particularly to speak out when they are abused to break the silence. His role as Chairmèn of the Catholic Men Association of Blantyre Archdiocese has given him real opportunities to work w5th a wide range of men beyond the communlties surrounding the Vocatlonal Skllls Centre. In Scotland. Our chair has developed and delivered workshops for schools, and other groups such as Rotary, to challenge their perceptions of Malawi and understand the debilitstlng impact of concepts of donor dependency and the 'whlte gaze,. We developed an entry for the Scotland Malawi Partnerghlp Photo Exhibition whith Is travelling Scotland wlth two photographs representlng STEKAskills' value5 and work. Challenges Inflation (around 40% and much hlgher for fuel and some food) rked MalawS and caused the costs of bsJSldlng to Increase. Economlc Instabllity is likely to be a recurrlng theme in the coming years. Thls has been a very successlul year in terms of the range of ambitious projects funded by STEKAskills. It has alsts been a very difficult year irh terms of the increased pressure on the team of volunteers in Malawi and Scotland cèltsed by having to m3na8e multiple projects as well as the other activities at the STEKA Vocational Skills Centre. It h35 become clear that we need to institute measures to ameliorate this.

At the end of the year the charty had unrestrlcied funds of £10,173 and restrkted funds of £16.610. Structure, Governance and Management Governlng document The charity is controlled by Its governing document. a deed of trust and constitutes an unincorporated charlty. Recrultment and appolntment of new trustees The board may at any time appoint any person to be a charity trustee- by way of a iesolution passed by majority vote at a board meet5ng, At the conclusion of the fSrst AGM, one third (to the heare5t round numberl of the charity trustees shall retire from offlce,. the questlon of which of them Is to retire shall be determined by some random method. At the conclLJsion of each AGM lother than ihe fiTStI any charSty trLlStees appointed during the period since the preceding AGM shall retire from office. Out of the remaining charity trustees. one third (to the nearest round numberl shall retire from office.
