Objectlves and Activities Disturbed by the increase in the use of foodbanks in this Untry, and inspired by the example of US musician nd his charity organisation Bread Over Bombs, we decided to see what we could do to lend assistan to fight food povety in our own area, the West of Scotland. Following some research it seems the most effective aid we can give foodbanks is through cash donations, so we aim to raise funds for this purpose through a variety of means. In our first six years as a regislered charity in addition to soliciting donations from individuals and commercial organisations, we have organised music and comedy events. held raffles, sold donated music albums and badges. organised cash collections al various music venues in the city, taken part in the Kiltwalk and held cash CollelonS at rock concerts. all to raise funds for our cause. Structure, Governance and Management Our organisation is set up as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) with a single-tier rnanagement structure. registered in its (rrent legal form on 12 April 2018. The charity was previously an unincorporated association but changed its legal fomi to a SCIO. The assets of the unincorporated associalion were transferred to the SCIO on the 12 April 2018. We are govemed by our Constitution which states our main aim is the relief of food poverty through raising funds by a variety of means in order to make donations on a regular basis to local foodbanks, food pantries and similar organisations. We aim to pass on all the funds we raise as quickly as possible. donating io foodbanks in the West of Scotland which preferably are themselves registered charities. A voluntary Board of Trustees meets regularly to dlscuss and declde on ways of raising funds and to determine which foodbanks will receive these funds. When possible we meet face to face in a central location. but also video conferencing where more convenient, for our regular Board meetings. The current Board consists of five members, all trust8es of the charity. who came together in 2018 to launch the organisation and establish it as a charity. Each brings a different skill-set to the meetings, and together we have many years of experience in business matters and the muslc Industry. Membership of the Board is by invitation from the existing members, and any future recruitment will be by this method. Achlevements and Performance As with most charitable organisations the current economlc climate makes fundraising challenging, but in this our sixth year of operation as a regislered charity we have sought to build on our achievements of previous years. and continue to raise our profile with the public in order to generate donations which we can then pass on to foodbanks. One of the main ways we have done this is by investing time and some funds in increasing our preser on social media and developing our own website. During this year we have continued to enjoy the skills and financial supp)rt of one of our supporters whith has enabled us to update our website and move it to a new host and domain, saving us the expense of these.
We are always seeking new ways to raise funds and to tap into the willingness of individuals and businesses in the city to help those less fortunate. One useful method has been to use board members, contscts in the music business to obtain permission to collect mainly cash donations from those attending popular rock concerts in Glasgow. This year we have also started taking contadless bank card donations as we noted some people no longer carry cash. This approach gained us almost twi>thirds of our income for the year. The other major source of donations has been through corporate sponsors which. though lower than in previous years. accounted for a quarter of this yearfs income. We are particularly pleased that a prominent Glasgow business has chosen to make their chantable donations through Bread Over Bombs (Glasgow). showing confidence in our ability to get the money to the places that need it most. Unfortunately again this year we were not able to participate in the annual Kiltwalk. which was a useful source of income in previous years. Overall. donation income was less than in previous years, {£9,700. compared with £15.674 last year). Nevertheless, with our usual rigorous control of the costs of running the charlty where we aim to pass on as near as possible to 1000/0 of donations. we were able to make 43 individual payments to all 13 of our local foodbanks. Whenever possible we like to visit the fc)odbanks to hand over our donation cheques in order to make a connection with them and to understand their problems and challenges. Although we switched to making online bank transfers during the Covid- 19 situation, we hope to resume these personal visits as soon as possible. Whilst our donations to each individual foodbank have been relatively modest, it is clear that our efforts have been appreciated by the foodbanks we have helped: Thank you so much, again, for your very generous donation to the Foodbank. We really are very grateful for this conlribution. I would, also, like to send our deep appreciation to the volunteers who collect the funds at the concerts. I know this can be hard work and, at times. not very pleasant in the Scottish weatherl Rutherglen & Cambuslang Food Bank As always th8nk you so much foryour continued support, it is very much appffjciated and never taken for granted. Our thanks to you, the venue and all the supporters for helping us make a derence in the community. East Kilbride Foodbank Once again thank you for your most generous donation and for thinking about us. We will put this money to very good use in helping those most in need. God Bless Coatbridge Food 8ank Thank you so much for the kind donation to Crookston Community Group. This money will go a long way to buying food for people in need Glasgow North East Foodbank Thanks once again Stewart - you guys do a reMaable jobl Thank you for being 'unsung heroes". though there has been much singing at gigs and concerts - and pl8ng more than your p8rt to help us cary on effectively meeting needs throughoul East Ren and beyond. East RenfWshi Foodbank Team A belated but nonetheless sincere thanks to you and your supporters for your genemus donation. IÈ really is appreciat8d and helps keep us afloat financially. Best wishes from staff at Queens Park Govanhill Foodbank. In general we aim to maintain a simple and streamlined financial structure whereby we distribute the monies we raise as quickly as is practicable. maintaining only sufficient reserves which may be required to fund the initial costs of mounting a fund- raising event. Al 301h April we held funds of £503 in our bank account, representlng the balance 8t the start of the year plus the small surplus we are showing for this year, which has already been earmarked for distribution to foodbanks earfy in the new financial year. Donatod Fa¢llltl•s and Servlces In addition to the many individuals who have responded so generously to our fundraising efforts this year, we have benefited enomiously from a number of local businesses who have provided sponsorship and made donations. In particular we gratefully acknowledge assistance from Frontline Construction, Love Music record store, Blitzkreig. Cc's Bar in Paisley and CALA Associates Ltd. Thls year th8 collections at local (x)ncert venues has boosted our fundraising considerably, and our gratitude goes to the venue staff and security and to the management and band members who made it possible. Thank you to Barrowlands. Sl Lukes, Platfomi, Regular Music, DF Concerts, Hold Fast Entertainments, Rock Steady Security, Midge Ure, Waterboys. Future Plans Our intention has always been to build on past successes, grow our organisation and raise its profile, in order to bring the plight of fo¢xlbanks to public attention and thus raise more donations to pass on where they are needed. Recent world events and increases in fuel priS and the cost of living are placing the clients of our foodbanks under greater strain than ever before. and we want to play our part in helping them. Our relatively small size and freedom from onerous overheads means that we are able to pass on virtually all of the money we raise. We have had to devise new means of raising funds. induding forging links with large cOnrt promoters to allow us to take cash donations at their events. This has proved a useful way of raising small donations from a large number of people in a short tlme, and we will continue to do so. We are delighted that through our efforts we are slowly becoming known for our work in the area, and that those giving us their donations, both large and small, trust us to ensure that their money reaches the foodbank locations which need it the most. It has always been our aim to increase our profile and become a known and trusted means of channelling charity funds to where they are most needed and Whe they will be most effective in alleviating food poverty, within our foodbank community, In the West of Scotland. We will continue to do this through maintaining a digitsl presence on social media and other platfomis. and by all other means available to us. Unfortunately it seems thal the need for foodbanks is greater than ever now, and our aim is to continue to help fight local food poverty and assist those who struggle to feed themselves and their families.
