ANNUAL GENERAL REPORT ANDOqq• GLAS 2021- 2022

INTRODUCTION

ANDO GLASO SCIO (AGS), registration number: SC050416 was established informally in 2016 to encourage greater understanding and participation in the cultural heritage of the Roma people in Scotland aiming at stimulating and advancing community cohesion that is built on respect for celebrating diverse cultural identities. The organisation was initiated by a dedicated group of volunteers who shared the passion and desire to further encourage links between the Roma and Scottish diverse cultures at several levels including support and understanding through the promotion of arts and music programmes, educational workshops and seminars, conferences and events at local and national level.

Ando Glaso’s mission is not only to strengthen and support Roma people; but to work with diverse communities and stakeholders across Scotland to celebrate and promote Roma cultural heritage.

Since March 2020 cultural sectors across the world have experienced perhaps the biggest turmoil and uncertainty of ever-changing regulations, functioning structures leading to inevitable need of reshaping services to digital realms. This disturbance continued to affect the work of Ando Glaso SCIO (AGS) during 2021 but as the restrictions started to ease, we were able to start returning to our regular projects and activities in 2022. Therefore, most of the work at the start of financial year 2021 – 2022 has been carried out online involving video recordings, live streamings, online workshops, conferences, etc and we were able to return to live events and in person projects from the autumn of 2022. This period brought on new challenges as we had both digital and on the ground projects running at the same time, requiring more and more resources.

Despite these challenges, AGS has gone through a growth and increased its funding and service delivery portfolio. The charity has attracted funding from various sources along the continuous funders like Creative Scotland and Glasgow Life and established a new digital Roma cultural platform, “OPA!” . The increased digital presence paved the way for AGS into more partnership work online with national and international partners. While cooperation with local agencies like the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council, BEMIS, Romano Lav, Community Renewal continued, the charity developed strong links with the Roma Support Group in London , Luton Roma Trust and KaskoSan in Bradford .

AGS also secured a grant from The National Lottery Heritage fund to conduct a large-scale research project, exploring the cultural heritage of the various Roma communities around Scotland. This year-long project delivered in partnership with the National Library of Scotland, will lead to a 2 days long festival in 2022 showcasing the colourful Roma heritage present in Scotland through workshops, talks, exhibitions and concerts.

Ando Glaso SCIO SC050416

We have established our youth program and successfully secured 3 years funding from Gannochy Trust and Young Start. For the second year of the project we also secured further funding from the Youth Music Initiative. We have been commissioned to deliver educational projects for partner organisations such as Community Renewal.

In January left the board and joined Ando Glaso to take his place. He is a well known, award winning musician from the Scottish Traveller community representing Scottish Travellers in the organisation. was invited to join the board following his numerous contributions to Ando Glaso’s projects over the years.

The return of live events meant that we can organise our regular events such as Roma nights and Transylvanian ceilidhs, not only in Glasgow but in Edinburgh as well. We have secured high profile performance opportunities at events UK wide and supported the development of groups from the various Roma communities. Our groups have been invited to prestigious festivals such as Celtic Connections, Glasgow Mela, Scots Fiddle Festival, Appleby Horse Fair and appeared at events organised by partner organisations such as Romano Lav in Glasgow or The Roma Support group in London. To support more Roma people into participation and employment within our projects, we established a tailor made advocacy service with funding from the Robertson Trust. This service is especially focusing on women and young Roma people to make sure they can equally participate and benefit from our work within the cultural sector.

Overall, the last year has brought about many new challenges stemming from the pandemic but also new developments into different kinds of digital domains as well as new partnerships and areas of creative and educational work. AGS has successfully adapted into the new and flexible ways of working in the cultural sector and creative industries. Our organisation continued to grow and we have extended the number of employees. At AGS, we are pleased that we have been able to assist and support Roma communities in different ways during these challenging times while we continued to produce high quality artistic content which has strength our good reputation nationally and internationally..

Thanks to funding streams like Creative Scotland, Glasgow Life we were able to make many music and dance video recordings with various Roma artists groups residing in Scotland and beyond even at times when social distancing rules were imposed. During lockdowns our Roma artist associates would record music and videos at their households, then send them in electronic forms to our artistic director who would then mix the individual music and video recordings together and produce them to required formats for online platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and others. The videos and recordings are available on different online platforms for world-wide audiences:

Another milestone in the digitisation process of AGS services has been a creation of online platform www.opa-opa.org which will be an online platform for different Roma artists and groups to store and showcase their creative work. The initial stage of Opa-Opa platform was facilitated by grants from Communities Recovery Fund, Adapt & Thrive and Awards for All. The rationale behind the platform is to bring Roma culture to world-wide audiences as well as to assist Roma artists with the inevitable digitalisation process which can potentially create another source of income from their creative productions. The platform will also store all the creative work from AGS across its various activities and projects. Opa-Opa domain was officially launched later in 2021 although the complexity of the digital asset requires yet more structural work, financial input and engagement with more Roma artists, partner organisations, stakeholders and audiences. We believe though that Opa-Opa platform has a big potential to bring benefits to Roma communities in the UK and internationally while it may become one of the central parts of AGS work in years to come.

Youth Work:

Outreach: Over 90

Active participants: 38

Following a successful pilot program in 2020, we secured funding for 3 years from Young Start, Gannochy Trust and additional funding from Youth Music initiative. This allowed us to further establish our youth work and we have successfully delivered the first year of the project. During this time we have supported the development of a new youth ensemble called ZOR. They have established themselves as ambassadors of Roma culture, with the aim of representing Gypsy music on the mainstream cultural scene. During the first year ZOR has already performed at professional events such as Kelburn Garden Party and produced a number of professional recordings/videos. These are available on the group’s own page:

www.facebook.com/zorband

We have established strong partnerships with organisations such as the ROyal Conservatoire of Scotland,, Society of Antiquaries, GMAC, Glasgow Life, Youth Scotland, Cryptic and others. Together with these partners we have delivered numerous workshops and brought exciting activities to Roma communities in other places such as Clydebank. We have offered these opportunities to over 90 young Roma people and significantly grew the number of participants, engaging young people from even the hardest to reach Romanian Roma communities. We have also secured paid work placements for 4 young Roma people as part of the Society of Antiquaries Scotland’s Dig It project.

Roma Empowerment Through Heritage:

Roma participants: 50

In 2021 AGS secured funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a year-long large-scale project. We started delivering the project in September and during this year we will be visiting 50 Roma people from the various Romanian, Polish, Slovak, Czech, Hungarian etc Roma communities around scotland. We are asking the participants to share what cultural heritage means for them through videos and recordings. The collected material will be archived in the National Library of Scotland and also on our OPA! platform. The project will lead up to a 2 days long Roma cultural festival in the CCA, showcasing Roma culture through workshops, talks, exhibitions and concerts. We have secured further funding from Museums Galleries Scotland as part of Year of Stories to commission four Scottish GRT artists such as legendary storyteller to create a 40 minutes long piece bringing together music and stories from the Scottish Traveller heritage. This piece will be showcased as part of our festival.

Future Plans:

The growth of our organisation over the last year reassured us that our work in the field of Roma empowerment through culture and heritage is much needed. The large-scale cultural deprivation of Roma communities remains one of the main obstacles for Roma inclusion, integration and active citizenship. Our main objective will remain to tackle this issue through our various projects and support the presence of Roma people and culture in mainstream cultural life in Scotland and beyond. We will be working hard to provide support to Roma people to be able to participate and take advantage of these opportunities. We will work hard on creating an infrastructure based on our own cultural heritage that can provide meaningful and long term opportunities for employment, education, confidence building and active citizenship amongst many other things. Our focus will be on young Roma people as we believe they hold the key to successfully tackle issues such as the cultural deprivation that makes our communities vulnerable to crime, ghettoisation and racism. Our long term goal is to extend our work UK and Europe wide in the upcoming years, to nurture and promote Roma culture in support of people regardless where they live. To make sure we achieve our goals, we have developed a robust business plan together with Community Enterprise.
