OSCR Annual Report 2024-2025

Introduction ; The Trustees of Whiting Bay and Districts Improvements Association SCIO are pleased to present this Annual Report, highlighting our ongoing commitment to enhancing the natural and built environment of Whiting Bay. Through the tireless efforts of our volunteers, supporters, and community partners, we continue to foster civic pride, promote environmental stewardship, and create spaces that bring joy and connection to residents and visitors alike. 2024-2025 has been another very successful! year.

1. Planted Tubs and Spring Bulbs

We currently maintain over 50 planted tubs and boats throughout the village. These vibrant displays, lovingly cared for by our dedicated volunteers, bring seasonal colour and charm to our community. We supply spring bulbs which ensure Whiting Bay remains a picturesque and welcoming destination year-round and replaced several tubs this year.

2. Bus Shelter Artwork

Our bus shelter artwork remains a cherished feature of the village. Regular maintenance ensures this public art continues to inspire admiration and contributes to the aesthetic appeal of our shared spaces.

3. Putting Green Management

The Putting Green is a permanent favourite among locals and tourists and thanks to our grass cutter is beautifully maintained while having natural verges for wildlife and flora. Its popularity underscores the importance of recreational spaces that encourage community engagement and outdoor enjoyment.

4. Beach Cleanup and Path Maintenance

Our volunteer work parties diligently maintain the cleanliness of our beach and village paths. Regular litter picking and upkeep efforts preserve the natural beauty of Whiting Bay and ensure a pleasant environment for all. Volunteers also repair and paint benches and picnic tables.

5. “Walk Your Way Round Whiting Bay” Leaflets

Our free “Walk Your Way Round Whiting Bay” leaflet continues to be a valued resource and is widely distributed on Arran. This guide promotes exploration of our scenic walking routes and fosters a deeper appreciation of the local landscape

Striving to make Whiting Bay & Districts a great place to live and visit.

6. Public Toilets

Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, public toilets at Sandbraes and in the village centre remain open 24/7 and are much appreciated. We carry out ongoing maintenance but have secured grant funding to refurbish the village toilets and this will be done next year along with the replacement of the doors at Sandbraes toilets.

7. The Jetty

The jetty, which we recently restored, is a vibrant hub for water sports, family outings, and quiet reflection. The jetty continues to be a focal point of village life. Final enhancements, including the installation of fenders and rings have been done. We keep the path to the jetty as clear as possible and have several picnic benches for people to enjoy the views including one which is wheel chair accessible. We plan to have a Bucket and Spade library next year.

8.The Boat Slip

The boat slip provides opportunity for small vessel access to the sea and a hard standing for boats and kayaks to be parked. We plan to improve the sea defences next year.

9. Annual Fun Weekend

Our Annual Fun Weekend was once again a resounding success. Highlights included Family Fun in the Park, the crowning of the Bay Queen, the Putting Competition, Sand Sculpture Contest, Quiz and the Car Treasure Hunt and with the collaboration of other organisations there was also a Fun Run, Bowling competition and Beach Scramble. This event remains our primary fundraiser and a joyful celebration of community spirit.

10. Additional Activities

Beyond the Fun Weekend, we continue to host a variety of events that bring the community together, including: the 50-50 Club, Annual Firework Display, Hogmanay Dance. These traditions are now integral to the social fabric of Whiting Bay.

11. Community Support

Our well-attended public meetings reflect the strong support we receive from residents, businesses, and visitors. These gatherings foster transparency, collaboration, and shared ownership of our initiatives.

13. Projects for next year

Throughout this year we have been working towards securing the funding and organising new projects including a new path with handrails to Sandbraes Park and saving our Village Green from Coastal erosion.

Striving to make Whiting Bay & Districts a great place to live and visit.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Whiting Bay and Districts Improvements Association

I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 5 April 2025 which are set out on pages 1 to 2.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities

Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the 2006 Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner’s statement

My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner’s statement

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention,

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

  2. to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations

  3. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations

have not been met, or

  1. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
