We51er Hailes Growing CommuEJilies (WHGC) w&8 Incor￿Tated in17ih July 2017 to Support residents of
Council estat¢s artd oth¢r wmmuniii¢s in th¢ South West of Edinbiirgh to work iogether with Iheir neighbours lo
nsligate and develop comrnunity green5pace Frojecls. We have found that p&rti¢ipatioii in community
greenspAc¢ sup￿rtS Individual and comrnunity heatlh and Well1￿Ing. This is particularly impDrtant in
disadvantag¢d ￿MM[Mit1¢S wilhin council estates.
ACTIVITIES- WHO DO WC HELP
In Octokr 2023, we updated our constitution lo r¢ducc our targcl community to Wester H&il¢s and the Calders.
Previously. our target community was all coun¢il esknt¢s in the south west of Edinburgh. We made this (kcision
ror several reasons, FK)w¢ver. it primarily re5ulied from a request frorn the ScottT$h Land Fund re]￿Ing to our bid
to take ownership of a sile in Wester Hailes throttgh a corninunity a5sel trI￿Sfer. It also reflected the reality of
ihe communities wiihin whieh we hnd started the oryanisation and where w¢ had be¢n focusing our support.
When appropriBt¢. wc will slill undertake PD)jeas oulwith Wesler Hsiles if il sUp￿rts the objectives of the
oJEanisation, bul we will not seek repr¢scnlalion of ￿m￿]UllItE¢S ouiside W¢sler Halles and ihe Calder$ on our

This ycar htls beett rcmarkablc for our gardcns. Thc bcautiful wcathcr brought bDth joy ehall¢ng¢
e5p¢cially the prolonged dry spells-but our growing community has thrived. M¢mb¢rship wntin￿d lo risc,
ith niore than 90 farnilies and indivTduals now active across our three garden sites.
With this growth came new oppoixunities to ￿VieW and strengthen our garden wli¢i¢& ensuring consistency and
ratrness acro&8 all sites. We weye also deliglited ￿ host Anni5sa's reseaich with n¢w and som¢ lon8-staTxlin8
Scots, exploring barriers to participation and ways to make our gardens even more inclusive and wel¢omin8.
Gr¢¢nway Gard¢n$
Tl1¢ G￿enWAY Gard¢n has flourished this year, with membership ¢limbin8 to over 50 ￿￿pIe and families. The
size orth¢ garden makes il a ¢hall¢ng¢ lo rnanage. so having most bed5 allocated tt) local growers has iKen a
real lielp.
Our volunteeTS have once again been incredible. cOntri￿ting more than 1.600 hours oftime and energy. Their
work Iw transfomed the garden-in5ts]ling solar panel& benche& planters. windmills. a worniery. compost
sicve swing. poi)d4 p¢r801￿ cold frames. and iinprov¢d slora8e in both sheds. Wc arc dccply grateful for their
rnmitment.

Under Richard's 8uidan¢e, the Clovenslone Gard¢n continu¢s to thriv< building on last year's strong

lower end has ￿en a highlight.

Gaby has provided outstanding support to ihe CaldLrs 8arden and its membeo helping rnatnlain 8 strong sense

school. This makes the circular conne¢iion of where food comes from and ¢ncourages heatihy fix)d choices

The stom] in February lifted the Cover of the polytLinn¢l. Not dcl¢rred ¢liildren took aciion 10 88ther up Ihe torn
ov¢r and we replaced it in April, ready for th¢ summer terffl.

Previously we've worked wilh whote cluses but this year the 5d)ool ¢han8ed thc group5 10 young people who
n¢¢dcd a bil MO￿ support for example wnfiden¢¢, langua8e or w0￿1ng with others artd os a reward for doiiig
well in class. As a result I'm working with small¢r group5 from P2 to P7 and Iln also working more closely
with the teachers to support the youn8 ¥ropI¢.

As cver we've had some mighty dtS&8*rb And wonderful successes with our Crops but every minute spent in Ihe
farn) has been worth while especiAlly when you Irar sott]eone say I've iried it b¢fore'...... then Ihey do or they
love the progre&s of their plants ￿ much they start to measur¢ thcm ¢v¢ry w¢ek whi¢h ewily whai Mason did
with ihe rhubarb!
We've continued io stay connect¢d to th¢ cald￿ Communily Garden with regular visits &nd for Ihose who don t
get a chan¢e at the moment lo attend sclK)ol farm we have SL'osonal visits lo look at th¢ changes in the garden.

Reserves Policy
ThL' reserves (being the bank balance as ttbov¢) at 31 Morch 2025 are £43.080 {2024'. £43.696). The current
level of reserves held is for use by ihe orgartisation in forthcoming years in order to meet its objectiv¢$,

We continued lo work with thc Council to bring forward tk development of the Greenway Hub, After ttK
r¢i¢ction of th¢ bid lo th¢ RCGF in 2023124, w¢ worked lo rais¢ th¢ £30k funds that would be required io
develop detailed drawings to subrnit a planning application- we found tl)is very difficult. We deci&d lo take &
two stage approach whereby we would devclop first a 'Greenway Micfohub" Ih¢n mov¢ on to the creation of
the larger Green￿), Hub in subsequent years. In 2024ll5 we fin&lly raised the fu11ds for a d¢si8n 9tudy for the
Greenway Mierohub.

l. Accounting Policy
The accounts have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis in accordance with the Charities
& Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006
(as amended).
2. Nature and purpose of funds
Unrestricted funds are those that may be used at the discretion of the trustees in furtherence of the
objects of the charity. Restricted funds are funds subject to specific requirements as to their use
which may be declared by the donor or with their authority or created through legal processes, but
still within the objects of the charity.
