## **Charity Trustees**

Name all of your charity trustees for the period, and the date they left if they were not in post for the whole year

## **Objectives and activities**

Create a Smile Scotland was set up in response to the growing issue of social isolation in Scotland and the consequences of such isolation, particularly relating to well-being and mental health.

The purpose of the charity is to attempt to combat the social isolation of individuals in our communities, especially those in the more rural areas of Scotland. We aim to provide activities in different areas to try and alleviate the social isolation of individuals, particularly those more vulnerable members of society.

Our activities will be discussed further in the Achievements and Performance section, followed by an overview of the 2023/24 financial year.

## **Structure, governance and management**

Type of governing document

Create a Smile Scotland was registered on July 12[th ] 2017 and is governed by a constitution, outlining the charitable purposes and is a single tier structure. The constitution remains unchanged as of 31/7/24.

Trustee recruitment and appointment

No new Trustees were appointed during the year.

Achievements and performance

We believe in helping everyone, regardless of age, ethnicity or sexuality. We are here to help and support anyone who is experiencing social isolation and loneliness.

This year had been similar to 2022/23, with many of our groups still not returning. Due to a downturn in volunteers and the conclusion of our funding for the Outreach Worker post, our year has been significantly quieter again.

The following sections will outline our activities for 2023-24, followed by our financial report.

Cup o’ Kindness Social Club

We’ve continued with our Cup o’ Kindness club and we still meet fortnightly. The members have told us how much this club means to them, to be able to get out of the house for a few hours and have some laughs with friends. Every fortnight, we have lively conversations about the world, music, tv and, of course, the great Scottish weather!

Christmas Gift Appeal

As with last year, our Christmas gift donations were less than previous years. However we are so grateful to those who did donate, particularly as we’re in a cost of living crisis and know everyone is trying to get by. We managed to get some gifts and biscuits delivered out to individuals across our local areas.

Differences Made in the Community

Our work in the community has been less this year as our groups haven’t been able to be reestablished post-Covid. Funding has also been extremely difficult to obtain, which comes as a direct result of excess funds being made available by funding bodies to combat Covid. As such, we have had difficulties in securing funding. We have maintained our Cup o’ Kindness social group, which has been a real joy for us each fortnight. We now also have a small book exchange within the group, which gives the ladies something to focus on between our meetings. This has been another way for people to connect outside of the group.

As mentioned, outreach has been significantly diminished this year, partly due to funding and also due to the fact that we no longer have a community outreach worker. As such, we have to rely on volunteers to do things when/where they can.

**Financial review**

Our financial report is detailed below. Our independent examiner has years of experience as a treasurer for community groups/local organisations and has previously worked for HMRC.

Statement of the charity’s policy on reserves

We no longer have significant monthly outgoings and so the aim is to keep £50£100 on reserve where we are able to do so.

Donated facilities and services

Other than the time of our volunteers, we received donations throughout the year. As usual, we received some gift donations to be given out at Christmas. These gifts consisted biscuits, some hats/carves/gloves.

## **Notes to the accounts**

Our accounts have been prepared in line with OSCR’s guidance on Receipts and Payments accounts. Our annual returns are less than £250,000 and our constitution does not require accrued accounts. The following section will outline donations, grants and specify what charitable activities our income was spent on for the year 2023-24.

We’re very grateful to have Shire Housing as a community partner. Shire Housing obtained a grant through the Covid Recovery fund, of which some funding was secured for us also. This money has been primarily spent on our older people socials.

Our social club refers to the Cup o’ Kindness social club where we go out to the local café fortnightly for tea and a scone.

## **Future plans**

Due to a lack of volunteers, we have been unable to build our groups back up post-Covid. We have struggled to secure funding throughout this year and so our activities have suffered as a result. We would love to be able to build the groups back up and be back out in our communities making a difference, but this has definitely proved difficult during this past year. We remain hopeful that we can maintain our current social group and perhaps look to grow our volunteer numbers again, which would help us to reestablish the groups.

Always remember: In a world where you can be anything, be kind!
