Objectives and activities Charitable purposes The advancement of the arts, heritage, culture or science Summary of the main activities in relation to these objects We provide community art activities in the north of Glasgow. We want lo deliver creative, exciting. and a¢SSIble arts projects that enrich lives and strengthen communities. We want to create experien5. memories and opportunities. not simply ple5 of art.
Achievements and performance Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period BOOM! Community Arts brings people together to take part in fun, engaging arts activities which respond to local need. We focus our work in North Glasgow, an area particularly affected by poverty as defined by the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation. which has a gap in provision of creative activities. We provide our workshops free of charge in order to reduce bale[S to participation. A group of professional and experienced sessional artists and workshop leaders deliver our projects and workshops, all with years of experience of working in this context and familiar faces to the local community. During this year, we worked with a total of 10 artists, 4 delivering our regular workshops and 6 who provided cover or worked at one-off events, expanding our artist pool. The organisation is run by a dedicated volunteer board and a small freelance team of a General Manager (2 days a week) and a Marketing & Projects Coordinator (1 day a week). This year, we were able to increase the General Manager position from 1 day a week to 2 days a week due to successfully gaining additional funding. This increase in core staff capacity has allowed the organisation to continue to deliver quality work, to invest more time in pursuing long temi sustainability through investment in fundraising and strategic organisational development. We continue to deliver our regular programme of year round communty arts worf(shops for adults. Still Scribbling on Monday momings has been successfully delivered in Possilpar* since 2018 and More Scribbling on Saturday mornings since 2021. Both take place in 4 x 10 week blocks across the year with 3 week breaks betrNeen, providing consistent provision throughout the year, and are delivered at St Matthews Centre who we have a longstanding relationship with. We continue to receive excellent positive feedback from participants and partners. We also continue to deliver Young Scribblers in association with Young People, Fulures, another strand which has been running since 2018 and where we have become well-known to the young participanls. This takes place at Possilpoinl Communty Centre at their youth club. Providing the option of dropin arts acb'vities allows children to explore their creativty in relaxed way. 2024-25 saw us holding our third year of Scribblers Academy. in association with Queens Cross Housing Association at the Courtyard. This project responds to gaps in local provision for teenagers and encourages them to develop their own artist style outside of the school environment which focuses on assessment rather than enjoyment and exploration. We continue to adapt this strand according to what we find works. This year we held the sessions at a new time of year and amended our workshop structure to allow for longer sessions. Each parbcipant is given their own art kit to keep, setting them up to continue enjoying art after the block of sessions ends. Both of our workshops for children and young people are delivered by a lead artist as well as an assistant. Our adult workshops are led by a lead artist. Our capacity for workshops is 10 participants for all w0shopS except Young Scribblers which is a drop in and can reach around 30 children per workshop. Ensuring we are well staffed and that our capacity is appropriate allows for all participants to have a high quality experience. We continue lo develop our work, our pool of artists, and our relationship
with the community, as well as build upon our strong connections with local partner organisations including the St Matthew’s Centre, Young People’s Futures, the Concrete Gardens and Queens Cross Housing Association.
Having contributed to Possilpark and Ruchill Loves Christmas in recent years, a popular event with the local community which was delivered in partnership with local organisations, which was unfortunately not going ahead this year, we funded our own Santa Saunter event. The local community were visited by Santa on a Saturday, being pulled around the area on a horse drawn carriage, with assistance from a team of 9 volunteer elves! We were proud to be able to deliver this popular event for the community.
2024-25 was the middle year of our second 3 year grant from the Glasgow Communities Fund totalling £67,155 across 2023-26. This grant allowed us to provide a consistent programme for the community, to expand our core staff team and supported us on our journey to sustainability as a small arts organisation. This grant funds around half of our total costs for this period, which has provided a basis to support us to continue to deliver our objectives and build on our organisational sustainability including successfully gaining funding from new grants using this grant as a basis, including Endrick Trust, William Syson Foundation and Scotmid Community Grant received during this financial year.
In the coming years we plan to continue to expand our operational staff team, in order to focus more time on developing the organisation and seeking opportunities to gain earned income, as well as engage further with our community, expand our programme according to local need and strengthen relationships with local partner organisations. We are careful to do this slowly and sustainably.
Our work continues to improve wellbeing, combat social isolation, tackle health inequalities and improve community cohesion through providing people with a social, free and welcoming place to be creative, connect with others and try something new in a relaxed environment. We look forward to continuing this work and to working with our local community to inspire them to explore and enjoy creativity no matter their experience or confidence level, and to feel the many other benefits creativity and community connection can bring.
In total we delivered 128 sessions of our regular programme, as well as the Santa Saunter all-day event and workshops at a Stockingfield Bridge event with Scottish Opera. Overall, we reached 677 people.
100% of survey respondents felt their health and wellbeing improved as a direct result of attending the workshops.
Some feedback from our participants:
“I tried everything, Holistic therapies all sorts, none of it worked. Then you (BOOM) brought a bit of colour into my life and it all changed. I literally wrote everything negative on a canvas and then I painted over it and doing that I just felt it all lift."
“I have finally accepted my drawing skills are improving, which since I was at stick figure level, I am really proud of. It is not a skill i have any confidence in so this is a big revelation.”
"I was told in my early years that I wasn't good enough to pursue any interest in art and even though all I wanted to do was learn more, my young, impressionable mind believed this for many years. That was until I became a member of Boom Community Arts. [Our workshop leader] has been supportive, encouraging and has taught us all so much in just a few short months from different techniques, mediums such as watercolour,
charcoal, pencil, pastels and cuThently we are learning to use inks in different ways. We have been introduced to the history and style of different artists, and went on eld trips. to art galleries to broaden our styles and experience such as the Scottish Local Artist, exhibition that recently ran at Kelvingrove Museum. It has been amazing to be part of a great community whilst watching the progress of myself and the people I have forged a friendship with through the community, just simply blossom. It is a wonderful class and I cannot thank Boom Community enough for instilling confidence, providing encouragement. communty and practice to become the artists we were meant to be in a safe and welcoming environment. Long may these classes continue, I'd be lost without them." Financial review Brief statement of the charity's policy on reserves We aim to hold unrestricted funds which are free reserves at a level of 6-9 months general expenditure.
